Subject: Visible Glowing Lights

I was experimenting with Atmosphere and Light-sources after reading a few threads about the subject.  I got a good visible light by using:

Atmosphere - Volume On

volume density = 0.01

volume stepsize = 0.175

The light settings are in the pic.

When I attached Edge Blend to the light Diffuse it made a very interesting effect. Attaching it also to Color makes it even stronger.

     I'd never seen that done with a point light - good work, Connatic.

     My first thought is whether the light cast can be adjusted relative to the glow brightness.  The light cast onto the floor looks overly bright compared to the pink pixie-like ball of light.  This is well worth pursuing;  I like the effect.  👍

The cast glow can indeed be adjusted to change the relativity.  There are the atmosphere settings on the light and the actual atmosphere itself.  As I experimented I could see the ratio change as I tried different settings.  I did not do it enough to recall what yielded the proper balance, but I am sure it can be done.  The Attenuation setting on the Edge Blend has a big effect on the balance of the 2 colors added to the light.

 

I also narrowed the spotlight and it became a tight beam.

Atmosphere also has a Volume Noise which has major effect on this.

It looks a lot more balance with these settings (I use units=feet):

Atmosphere:

Vol Color = pure white

V Density = 0.022

V Stepsize = 0.133

V Noise = 0.13

Point Light:

Attenuation = Inverse Square

Atm Str = 0.07

Intensity = 0.05

 

Edge Blend Att = 0.3

 

The Atmosphere Noise only works in conjunction with larger Volume Stepsize settings.

I'd seen that sort of effect in a couple of renders (e.g. Lenny2's "Jewel" and the 'no postwork comment convinced me it had been done using atmosphere). My own attempt ("Will O'The Wisp" - mild nudity warning)  fell a bit short of the mark and needed postwork. Your last picture above is exactly what I wanted... but in green/yellow.  Thanks for the information on how you did it (using the edge blend seems a great touch!) - I need to fish out the scene file and try using your settings.  :)

I am missing something, and it's how you are applying the atmosphere. When I apply the settings you posted, I am not seeing the same effect...

@rokket - My first guess would be that your UNITS in prefs is not set to feet.

No, I changed it when you noted that. What I am trying to find out is how you applied the atmosphere. Did you just go into that tab in the materials room and make those changes or did you apply it via the WACROS?

I did not use any wacros.  Just check Volume On in the Atmosphere Mat Tab and enter the settings.

I also did not use Gamma Correction in the Render Settings.  I recall it diminished the effect quite a bit.  I need to experiment with that a bit more.

I am using Poser 9, so no GC for me. But what about IDL?

I was not using IDL.  It works when using it, but it adds a lot more illumination, so the ratios between the Glow and the Illumination would need to be adjusted.

 

I have found a few other interesting ways to alter the glow and the illumination.  I will add to this very soon.

Oh, there is one more important condition!!!!!  The light itself MUST be in front of something!

It will not show up over the empty Background.

BB's Envirosphere? Or maybe a single sided square with visible in camera unchecked?

I simply had my light aligned in front of the ground.  You can see where it cuts off at the horizon.

Just do what I did, or put a box or any mesh behind the light.  The atmosphere does not show up over background.

It was the result of your work. I just copied what you did. I added a prop wall behind her to catch the atmosphere and make the whole effect work. Trying it with a single sided square near her hand wasn't cutting it.

:biggrin: I found my original PZ3 and tried Connatic's 'more balanced' settings - that's *much* more like what I was after, (although obviously too bright - the point light in this scene was very close to her face). Next step, trying to get the balance right between the glow and the cast light...

Thanks again for those settings, and the edge blend idea!

(P.S. Poser 9 render, Auto/Final quality, no other lights, backdrop was plugged into ambient on one of the DAZ environment props)

I've got what I was after now. There's probably many different ways to balance things, but reducing light intensity from 0.05 (5%) to 0.02 and changing the edge blend inner color to 192,192,192 (and outer to bright green) look good to me.

I had some problems because my point light was directly in front of her arm. I tried changing various things without success, and eventually side-stepped the problem by simply moving the light!

Great image - I'm no expert, but a good lighting setup (and I'd now say that a single point plus Connatic's volume settings is a good setup) can work wonders with even the most simple image - somebody's already made a similar comment on your picture!

I am amazed at how much high praise it has gotten, considering every other image I put in there might get 2 comments, but no ratings, no favorites. It says a lot about the lighting. Way to go Connatic!

Anybody that comes up with an innovative use of Poser lighting is likely to attract as much attention as someone that can use python (Snarlygribbly) or the materials room (Bagginsbill). I can see Believable3d becoming the hair room guru at some point (although for me, not quite there yet).
