I don't know of any really good Photoshop forums, but there are a lot of Photoshop tutorials, covering almost anything imaginable, on Youtube. Sometimes when I have an issue I just browse through them and find answers...

Also Adobe has resources and forums that are pretty good and quite active.  Adobe TV is a great place for tutorials as well, I learned most of what I know about Fireworks, Flash and Dreamweaver from there.  I have a good base knowledge of Photoshop as well if you have any specific questions. :)

I think you'd probably be better off looking for a forum dedicated to the type of art you plan to do rather than one dedicated to Photoshop then, because a forum about Photoshop is pretty generic and will no doubt be more about the program than the artistry.  I can't remember the name of it, but years ago when I first got a Wacom, I came across a forum where it was strictly 2D stuff, comic art and drawings, and although I never bothered to join I used to read it a lot.  And over the years, I've noticed the different types of comic art tend to generate their own communities with their own forums and stuff, so for a genuine appreciation of the type of art you do, those are probably the best bet to show your work I reckon.

You might also have the opportiunity to sell your art to people who are interested in that specific type of art.  It's a bit like the fetishes out there, they all have their individual communities so I suppose it's no different for art and comics.

ya I need to concentrat on my 2D skills for a while before I lose what little talent for it I have left.

like the looks of beloved ,so shall it be & atomic hell. think they have a hard rock, heavy metal music look to them ?

but to get a original style and repeat it consistently is not the easiest thing to accomplish thou.

but that's the look I'm going to go for. no promises on how proficient I'll be at it.

in stead of a comic with panels I'm going to mix comic paintings with paragraphs of writing to tell story's.

For me, for the Heavy Metal look, I think I'd have to go with:

Damned
Never Surrender Freedom
Made of Scars
Diamonds and Rust
Atomic Hell

Maybe even Tears as well, but I suppose it would depend on what album cover it was for if it was to be used for Heavy Metal, and the others might fit as well.  BTW, don't knock your talent as an artist, art is the overall image the observer sees, and if it looks good to the observer, then it's good.  Kinda like what (I believe) Vangelis once said about music "If it sounds good, it is good."  -  I think you can basically translate that to "If it looks good, it is good."  ;-)

If it's any consolation, I see the Heavy Metal look in your art without you even asking, I'm very fond of that art myself, I think the album art that goes with Metal albums in general is absolutely amazing, like a mass of nice, gritty detail in super-deep colour.

There's a few methods that may work.

Filter > Pixelate > Crystalize

Filter > Filter Gallery > brush strokes > splatter or distort > glass or distort > ocean ripple (all 3 are in the filter gallery)

A mixture of them may give you what you want.

As for the forums, I used to post a bit over at Photoshop Gurus. They're still active if you want to take a look around. https://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/

You might find project Dogwaffle more to your liking. I had PD particles ages ago, and it allowed me to use brushes to paint over images manually -- but without adding any color -- giving a very natural look to the brush strokes, rather than the very artificial look you get from filters.

Fantasy Attic has the unlock code on their Xmas giveaway page for Howler 8.2, which is made by Dogwaffle. It looks interesting, especially for 2D work, and I believe it contains an update of the PD Particles that I used to use.

http://thefantasiesattic.com/xmas/2014/2014.html

If nothing else, it might be fun to play with, and you can't beat the price. :)

James Lynch over at fb might be able to point you in the right direction, just tell him Boni sent you, it'll be cool.

Just in case you've not heard of it, don't forget to check-out a program called "ArtRage" - it lets you work like real media.
It's pure artistic goodness for anyone with a WACOM and a good imagination ;-)

Click Here for official details about ArtRage (they also have a large ArtRage Artists forum you might like).

And here's a Babe being done in ArtRage:

thanks you all so much for your all's help.

I have so much to do all at one time ,it's all a bit over whelming.

if I ever get half a chance i'm going to fine some forums.

I've been terrorizing filters ,there a lot of fun, I was a fan of pixelate in gimp also.

and Dog Waffle & ArtRage look like there fun app's also and I like playing with new app's.

but for time sake ya can just use one single app.

no doubt that Roth Dog ,JP is a killer Artist ,he done a wicked job on those boots & the woman is killer.

but comic artist can't use erase or antialiasing ,undo.

it's like ya constantly in one of those time challenges ya see in forums.

it's true ,I am a fan of woman and pin ups .a sexy woman is the most difficult thing to draw or model ,sculpt for that matter.

your ability to draw beautiful woman is used as a grading scale.

so if I can't draw a beautiful woman then doesn't matter what else I could draw .I'd just need to give Art up & go get a job at micky d's.

maybe not a pin up but my comics will always have sexy woman in it.

I always thought they should have had Gandalf a sexy apprentice. ;)

Can't help on the Photoshop thing, wouldn't know, I use GIMP and might even buy a permanent copy of ArtRage!
But what do you mean about a comic artist not being allowed to delete or undo, or use antialiasing?

I agree about the need to draw beautiful women, I'd be bored and wouldn't even bother with Poser if there was no such thing as beautiful women :-P

RorrKonn ( ) posted Thu, 18 December 2014 at 2:24 AM · edited Thu, 18 December 2014 at 2:30 AM

I know what Gimp can do and it's a killer app that can do a lot but what can ArtRage do that Gimp can't ?

since 99.9% of DAZ Poser is all about beautiful woman I'd say every one agrees with you :)

Comic Artist half to draw very very fast .you straight out draw in one take .so what ever line ya lay down that's it .

no second chances ya only get one.

.erase or undo ya working backwards ,it's a waist of time. antialiasing takes time you don't have.

any comic page in Marvel,DC etc etc before computers was penciled in 10 minutes. colored in 10minutes, inked in 10 minuets.

ya got payed ??? amount per page and if ya only made one page a day then ya got payed a niclel or 50 cent or what ever amount"depending what year and who ya was" for that days work.

and the penciler the colorer and inker is all waiting on each other to get payed so no time to waiste if ya to slow ya can't pay rent or eat.

I always thought of Comic Artist as the Art worlds version of short order cooks.

I know things have changed since computers but ya still get payed per page.

some of the top Comic Artist can get payed really good a page these days .

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about how fast you do it as long as you do it, why concern yourself about time-frames if there are none?

If you do a comic you're proud of before you show it to Heavy Metal, you still had all the time in the world to do it.  If you manage to get one of your babes on their website like you mentioned before, it really doesn't matter after that whether you like to do things your own way and in your own time.  Once you have your babe on Heavy Metal, you could always create your own website and use Heavy Metal as a way to prop-up your work, sell from your own website ;-)

I know what you mean though, I think a lot of those comic artists are a lot more gifted than I think some people give them credit for.

Anyway, there's a few reasons I recommend ArtRage:

  • You can tell it's designed for artists in ways that Photoshop and even GIMP just cannot do.
  • It's interface is 100% custom-designed for it's purpose (it's better for the same reason Bryce and Poser interfaces are better than in other programs).
  • You started out as a traditional artist, and using ArtRage is like using traditional art supplies on your desktop.
  • The price is so fair, they might as well give it away, and it's a permanent licence, not a leech-licence.

In ArtRage, you get a set of tools as if you're using the real thing, and each one of those tools behaves like the real thing.  For example, if you paint with a watercolour brush in the real world, you deal with colour, water, thinners, brush types, and you also deal with how the paint bleeds into each other and how they mix if you paint across them.  Well that's what happens in ArtRage as well, and that's just the watercolour brush, everything has a completely dedicated set of real life setting for the type of media you're using.  And all of this works with the preassure you put on your WACOM, how you actually draw with it, and again, even all of that is customisable.

On top of that, it has art rulers and stencils, both streight and curved (great for comic-style airbrush babes), as well as layers and all that usual stuff.

The only reason I haven't bought a full copy myself (yet) is because I still have an older cut down version that I got with my very first WACOM or scanner many years ago.  I will be buying a copy though, just as soon as I need it.  Hell, it was amazing even back then, and this new 4.5 version looks even better.  The only thing you have to be careful of is that you watch the correct version on YouTube, becaue ArtRage comes in Windows and MAC, and iOS and Android versions, so make sure you watch the desktop Windows or Mac versions on YouTube.

This guy has made some good videos that will give you some idea of how things work, this is just the watercolour brush, but watch it and you'll see how it reacts just like real media does in the real world, (and remember, this was just for the watercolour brush two years ago now).

And here's another one done by that Roth Dog dude, this one looks more comic-like and he makes use of the symmetry tool in this one :

Gandalf SHOULD have had a sexy apprentice. A sexy MALE apprentice. ;) Too many old guys with unwashed hair in movie version of LOTR (old guys with clean hair -- or no hair -- are fine!). When I read the books, there were TONNES of sexy men of all ages. LOL. In the movies, though, I sure liked Sean Bean (adore that Sheffield dialect, even though he doesn't lay it on in LOTR) and David Wenham's a cutie as well. Gandalf got stuck with the little guys. Heh. :P (Though I have to say, I'll take a short -- dwarven -- Richard Armitage any day of the week. Or a tall human one. I'm not picky.)

haven't gotten to stickers yet but they look promising.

I only know about 2% of ArtRage at this time.

I still don't know what my work flows going to be yet thou.

I have one answer for every 100 questions.

I really would have liked to use just one single app ,but from the looks of it ,that's not happening.

even thou I'm just doing this for fun I'm still under a time frame to release a comic every month &

I don't have much spear time to work on the comics so speed is still essential  .

I almost didn't see your reply, I saw that dotted line and just assumed you had a massive signature :-D

Anyway, I'm glad you're trying it out.   It's been a while since I used it but that's one of the biggest things I remember about even the early version, was that it has very nice flow and feel on the tools.  Even the way the rulers work, I absolutely love that, and actually, there should be no reason for you to need to touch another program if you make use of those things.  I honeslty can't think of any sort of hand produced art that cannot be done in ArtRage.  Those rulers are ideal for making panels for the comics or knocking out some perspective backgrounds, and then of course you have all the different media types to do the art and inking in there as well.  And layering, blending, mixing, it's all in there, all in one place.

Won't be long before you realise what I meant about it being "designed for artists", and don't forget to look into the ways you can zoom and pan around a page without even selecting a different tool, it had that even way back and I love it.

Anyway, another ArtRage babe Vid :

On BeLoved (nice), to hazard a guess I'd say it looks like some sort of oil technique but using a brush that has a slightly scruffy head of hair.

As it's on black, to get the same look in ArtRage I think I'd lay down some colour, just totally solid colours that are the base colour of the hair and skin, and then choose a much brighter version of each colour and paint over the solid colour with it.  If you set up all the brush settings you should be able to paint the lighter colour over the base colour and get those smudgy-type oil strokes out of it.

But I think the key with that look is 'oil' - something about it suggests an oil tool.

Regards the girl you posted here, I like her face (I think you're good at pretty faces), but I don't like the way the airbrushing blends in some areas, like between the two legs it looks too smoothed, like the skin is pulled over two legs together - so I think you need to look into that aspect of it.  There's probably a tousand and one ways to deal with that stuff, and I found a tutorial you might like.  Again, it's from Roth Dog, but he's actually speaking in this one and he tell you how he does his faces.  Be sure to watch it and check out that part where he uses inversion to get nice definition between the surfaces, because that's the bit you're getting wrong between the legs on your image.

Basically, watch how he tackles the edges around the bottom of the nose, and use the same technique between the legs on your girl.  It's pretty neat and he makes it look pretty damn easy as well, he's a good tutor so check it out - you'll be glad you saw this:

I like the face and the girl, but not the hair.  And if you're doing it for comics I think that chunky way of representing hair might work better for her, where it gets a basic outline for the major forms and some shading to give it depth.

You've got a heck of a lot of brush strokes to do for each drawing of her if you are going to put that sort of detail into it for a comic.
Anyway, looking forward to the T&A :-D

I know, it's an absolute no-brainer at that price, they were practically giving it away even before the sale.  Just goes to show that there are still companies who produce a good honest product at a good honest price, and not only survive, but generate their own thriving community from it.  I don't really need it right now, but if it's still on sale come Christmas or Boxing Day, I'll buy a copy.  I've been watching the price of that new Wireless WACOM as well, so if that falls in price as well, I'll buy both.

Yup, that looks more comic-like than the previous hair, there's still a lot of detail in it though, especially compared to the girl.
I think if you made less strands on the hair and more detail on the girl, they'll look better matched.

Anyway, might give it a spin later, see what they added to it in 4.5 :-)

there is programs other then Ps that make really great paintings a "easy" thing [easy as in if you can paint these are better then PS lol no good to a hamfisted ol'wotsit like me )

for free look at Krita awesome for painting or inkscape ~ this is a vector program (like Adobe illustrator ) has some nice "tricks" for cartoon work lol (watch a few tuts )

or for a small(ish) price there is howler (AKA dogwaffle) (there is a free version, old now but still has some wicked particle brushes, try it before you buy it )

Yup, Inkscape is cool, that's the vector tool I use as well, very powerful.
