Subject: Question about sharing links and Facebook

auntietk ( ) posted Sat, 19 July 2014 at 5:59 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 8:36 AM

Whenever I post an image to my gallery, I'm very careful to NOT check the "share this" box.  However, I just noticed that despite that, there is a "like" and "share" button for Facebook under every image in my gallery ... even going back to the first images I posted in 2007.  It seems to be a default setting, and I don't know how to get rid of it.

PLEASE tell me there's a way to get rid of that!

If someone "shares" an image on Facebook, according to Facebook's policy, FACEBOOK owns that image, lock, stock, and barrel.  That means they can use or sell my photograph (or anyone else's image) without asking me, without paying royalties ... nothing.

This is Facebook's verbage in their "Statement of Rights and Responsibilities:"

  • For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). ***This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it. *** (Emphasis mine.)

Having those buttons as a default is incompatible with Renderosity's copyright notification, also under every image in my gallery.  I don't post ANY of my work on Facebook, and don't think every random person who views an image on Renderosity has the right to make that decision for me, or for anyone else.

I've checked everywhere I can think of, but can't find a way to get rid of those buttons.  Can you help me?

Tara

Let me look into this further so that I can give you the correct answer regarding your questions.

I am going to speak with our copyrights department and I will be back in touch with you.

I'd like to point out, that even if they fix your specific issue, nothing stops someone from downloading a image, and then sharing it on Facebook.

Because of the nature of the web, anyone who so much as views a page which contains one of your images, gets a copy of it.

Thanks, Tina -- I'll look forward to hearing what they can do.  Much appreciated!

@ Fenier -- The reason I want the option has to do with permission and intent, not theft prevention.  If there's a "share this on Facebook" button right under an image, it gives tacit permission to anyone who thinks it might be cool to show their freinds this pretty picture they just saw.  No button means any re-posting would be intentional theft, as opposed to well meaning "sharing."

Hello!

Indeed, i don't like the obligation to have a fb button. Because before this obligation, i didn't accept to place any buttons of partage.

Now, i must place a word under my pictures: "Please, DO NOT "like" my pictures and stories on fb."

i don't like fb, so why we have all this button? Those who accept that their images will be placed on fb well find where to click to put this button; as do those who share on twitter and others.

Knock knock knock ...  anybody out there?  Tina?  Hello?

I realize it might be a complex answer, but is anybody back there talking about this?

I have sent a email to our Team asking their thoughts and to see if this can be removed from the Gallery images.

Pinky promise I will be back with you soon.

Ok so I did bring this up in the meeting and we are going to put this on our list of things to implement.  I do not have an estimated time but it will be worked I promise.

Hi Tina!

Just a 30-day bump on the question.  :)  Any movement yet?

Thanks for checking!

Maybe not the place to discuss it, but my understanding was that an image posted in the Renderosity gallery here was protected by some kind of copyright. Does that same copyright not hold true for the share button?

In other words...facebook claims that they hold all the copyrights to the content that a user posts on their page. However, if someone posts an outside link to their own artwork here, then shouldn't the Renderosity copyright take precedence over the Facebook copyright?

I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know the answer to that question, but thanks for asking and bumping this back up!

Any movement on this, Tina?

Hmmm ... I just noticed I started this thread in July.

Have they had enough time to think about this yet?

Good luck on getting any action on this.  I've been following this thread since it was started as I am also very interested in the outcome.  A promise is made to keep you updated back in August and no further response since then is a disgrace.

@auntietk - I know I know you think I forgot you.  I am going to be in the office and I have a post it not nailed to my forehead so I can see if I can get a straight answer once and for all about this.  So I will be there on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and I will be back in touch with you.

@auntietk - Ok I have spoke with the Powers and they have informed me that we will be pushing out a release and that the like/share buttons will become an option that you will have to select.  I do believe once this is pushed out you will have to go back into the older images and change them individually.  But going forward you would be able to change them when you upload the image.

Hi Tina,

Thanks!  I appreciate you going to bat for us on this, and I'll look forward to having a choice!  Any idea as to a time frame?  (I'm not trying to pin you to a date ... just a general idea of when the new release will come out.)

When they added those buttons, every image in my gallery was automatically updated to include them.  If they're not done programming yet, maybe they'll give us a blanket option to get rid of all of them at once.  (You have no idea how many times I rewrote that so I would sound like an adult and not some pissed-off crazy person.  Can you just mentally add a lot of swearing and jaw-dropped disbelief and still think of me as someone who makes reasonable requests?)

Tara

ps ... I didn't get a bot that said anyone had added to this thread.  I've got "notify" checked, but apparently it isn't working properly?

They tell me it should be in the next week or two for sure.  I will continue to hound them about so that it is not forgotten.  As for the blanket option I asked the same question and he tells me we would have to go back through our Gallery to make those changes but the new option would be available on new uploads.

 >> auntietk has uploaded 2676 images since joining on Jan 3, 2007 <<

I guess I'll be busy for a while!

The programmers will be thought of often ... somewhere in the range of 2,676 to 2,700 times!  Just in case they feel invisible ...  :P

You can't have everything.  I'm not looking forward to changing every image in my gallery, but having the choice is FAR better than not having the choice.

Thank you again for pushing this through!

Thanks for the bump, keppel.

Even in "Renderosity Weeks" (which I believe to be similar to "football minutes") enough time has gone by that we should be seeing a result.

how's it going back there, Tina?

Rather than "football minutes" I think a better analogy would be "time gets slower and slower the closer you get to a black hole" :)

Seems like the colour of a dress is more important than addressing this issue.

No the color of the dress was not more important.

As it stands right now it is beyond "my" control.  Once our programmers push out the next update then this is on the list to be included.

January 11th - "They tell me it should be in the next week or two for sure."

I know its beyond "your" control as you are not a programmer, but do your programmers really have any idea when this next update will happen?

Great to see BWsupport addressing outstanding forum issues in eight other threads just today.  When can we expect the much anticipated update that will see the subject of this seven month old thread fixed?

I know I know I agree with you all it is taking forever.  The programmer tells me that this will be in the next release along with the other issue being repaired.

We do certainly apologize for the delay and I will make sure to keep it reported to them so that it is not overlooked.

What's going on is the same thing that's been going on for the last two or three years:

1 A problem is reported in the forums.

2 We are told a new release is coming "soon" and it has been reported to the "programmers."

3 Weeks or months pass with no communication, and no resolution.

4 The admins say it's out of their control.

5 The powers-that-be at RR can't understand - or don't care - why members are leaving this site in droves.

Repeat steps 1 through 5 indefinitely...

I guess because of the E bot problem, I had no idea this thread was still active!

I haven't been around much lately due to my vision issues, but hopefully that will be resolved shortly, and I can get back to bothering you about this.

next month this thread will celebrate its one year anniversary! I don't suppose there's any hope of fixing the problem before its birthday?
