Subject: Genesis in Poser 2014 Pro -Practical opinions requested (not trolling or flaming

OK, those who know my username know i've been around the block.  Last 12 months has been a definite Poser slowdown for me, partially because of a lack of inspiration.

I keep trying Genesis and Genesis 2 via the DSON importer in Poser Pro 2014, i have a little content but haven't gone overboard because I cannot get any kind of satisfactory performance.  In fact, Poser seems to hang when using Genesis and Genesis 2, there doesn't seem to be any reason and no obvious pattern, just at 'some point' while setting up scenes with Genesis/Genesis2 figures it hangs.  My PC rig is pretty good, can handle a fair number of V4 and similar figures and from a computer standpoint, I am an expert as my day-job for my entire adult life is in IT Support.

Daz Studio does not interest me, i don't like it, never have and I doubt i ever will.  I'm not dissing it, I'm not saying it is worse/better than Poser, just that I have no interest in learning a new program that despite investing time in it, hasn't grabbed me.

Right...so that's the foundation.  The question is, has anybody managed to get the DSON/Genesis in Poser Pro 2014 to behave itself and use it as effectively as you would expect a poser native or older Daz figure to work?  I am at the end of my patience and I can see now technical reason that I'm doing something wrong or I have a fault or the suchlike. It just seems to be slow/unresponsive or, as outlined, hangs for undetermined reasons.

i'm intersted in other people's experiences to try and figure out if it's just the way it is or an issue with me/my rig.

Here's the tech specs:

Athlon X6 3.2ghz 1090T

16gb RAM

Nvidia 650 TI Boost

Poser Pro 2014 64-bit 10.0.5.28445 (latest SR)

DSON 1.1.3.50

looking forward to hearing any opinions

best wihses

I have the same problem as you have. At the point while setting up scenes, the poser UI just freezes. It usually will come back after a few minutes, but once it starts it keeps doing it again and again. Up to that point is a bit slow but you can work with it, after that it is impossible. It usually happpens if you have more that one G2 figure in the scene.

The problem does seem to be related to the number of morphs which have been installed for the figure.

Is your library still embedded or free floating via your general preferences.  For me, DSON imports slows down with an embedded Library.

Set your DSON subdivision to zero once a figure is imported.  This is also a point of slow Poser response.  This is no reason to have subdivisions active when composing a scene; have Poser do the subdividing during render where it counts.

Yep, the more morphs you load into Genesis/Genesis 2, the larger the model file becomes.  ATM, the only work around for this problem is move each DAZ morph type from its current program folder and create cr2 figures in Poser of individual morph sets.  Afterwards, recombine the files.  Unfortunately, with this approach, you will not be able to inject new morphs into established cr2's, you will need to generate a new DSON import.

Do you have your Poser , or Poser runtimes on a different drive than C?

My new PC , which has only Windows releated stuff on the C drive and all the Software goes on the D drive, my runtimes are stored on a another drive, does not work anymore properly with DAZ Studio or DSON. I even can not Install them anymore properly.

After the last try I give up again, no render possible, Poser freeze or crash.

As effectively as a native Poser figure or older DAZ figure?  No.  Absolutely not.

If you keep your scenes light, I think the figure is manageable to some degree.

You could probably make it "closer to effective" if you export it from DAZ Studio as a cr2 by baking it into a native file.  There are multiple things missing from the export and code blocks that need to be removed or DSON for Poser wants to "pick it up" when you load it.  You also loose some of it's native "features" going this route.

I avoid getting locked-in to a one-source solution for my figures and their accessories / utilities.  I use DSON Importer to get Genesis 1 and 2 content into Poser Pro 2014 EX, and have not had too much trouble, but then again, I don't use that figure often.  I am creating with, and for, the Poser-optimised figures, and feel quite happy to continue using them.

I've tried DSON on Poser Pro 2012, Poser Pro 2014, and Poser Dev. I have the same problems as you with all three versions.

DSON will run even if you do not use a G2m/f. It is a script and will run once Poser loads. This may cause Poser slowdowns.

Genesis figures hold every character morph you have for it into the figure base in Poser. This can make a figure way more memory and processor intensive than a fully loaded V4 with all her morph packages.

I have a 5 year old piece of crap PC with 15 gigs of RAM.and I can use the figure. It is slow and I spend a lot of time waiting for Poser to return control of the interface to me after every simple manipulation of the figure. Even moving an arm up down.

Does it work? Yes. Do I recommend it? Not so much. I have the figure only to troubleshoot Dynamic cloth and hair.  I wouldn't purchase clothing and such for the figure as even that requires DSON. More slowdown.

If you need to use the G1 or G2m/f figures I recommend you use Studio. The system is designed for Studio and works best there.

JoePublic did some posts on converting to a native Poser figure; seach on "Hacking Victoria" or "hacking genesis"...

Optimizations:

  1. If you have a SSD Drive use that for temp files and the DSON cache.

  2. Do not embed the Library Pane. (Having an embedded pane slows down things.)

  3. Place the PoserCF files in your Poser Base Runtime. (They are Python Scripts and while Poser will read Python Scripts from any runtime, it still prefers to read them from the Base Runtime.)

Given those optimizations, due to caching, after the first load, on my system (YMMV) Genesis 2 Female loads significantly faster than loading V4 plus injecting Morphs++. If you don't have lots of Genesis 2 Female Morphs, Genesis 2 Female can be loaded faster than Roxie.

For posing, and manipulation, set SubD level to -1 (Parameters Pane) or Scripts->DSON->SubDivision->Set Subdivision Off until it is time to render.

The way to get around the "load all the morphs" is to make each figure (A5, SP5, etc) a separate external runtime - only load the runtime you need.  If the runtime isn't in the library, DSON won't load it.

thanks everybody, this is really useful, I seem like I am not alone nor abnormal in what is happening.  I will try some of these suggestions.

For the record, the PC has an SsD and that's where everything including Poser is, a few other drives exist, but they are slower and I keep poser off them

wimvdb ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2015 at 2:43 PM

i use the SSD drive, makes no difference, subd is at lowest level, makes no difference: The UI slows down a lot and freezes poser after a while

My V4 injected with all morph sets loads a lot faster as genesis. Which is not surprising if you have saved it previously with external binaries active. This is what the DSON importer does as well when the poser cr2 is generated

As I said a single genesis figure is a bit slow but acceptable, but if you add more figures to your scene it gets a lot worse and becomes unusable

What I've done is loaded genesis into daz studio, moved the sliders to get the shape I like, added the texture I want and then exported it as a cr2 and used that with out much trouble. I'm not comfortable with the DS interface...personal preference that's all. People have difficulties with DSON. I probably wouldn't use genesis at all but I have a few characters I need to age about 5 years from kids to mid teens and genesis ages the best. The only draw back is the uvmap seems to change and what works on one converted character doesn't work on others.

I've done something similar to RedPhantom. Only I exported the base Genesis 2 Male and Female figures ( with the required morph packs installed in DS before export). I use Poser Pro 2014 to make reference images for my 2D work so I don't have to worry about how things render.  I load a Genesis 2, make the required character and save it to the library as usual. The one thing I did discover is that the exported DAZ Studio content prefers to live inside the main Poser Pro 2014 directory. On my computer Poser lives outside the main Program Files directory ( windows 8.1).  I like to keep that main directory as free of content as possible so most of my stuff lives on external runtimes located on a folder on my Desktop.  This makes things a lot easier to re-install in the event of a hard drive failure

If I put any exported DAZ Studio content into the external runtime then Poser acts strange. I get multiple references to that library inside Poser and if I try to load something Poser will crash.  I found that keeping the exported content in the downloads folder inside the main Poser directory makes everything work perfectly. Poser's happy and I can use the Genesis related stuff without issues.  The only thing I have to remember is that IK doesn't work, but that's no biggie for me.

I used the same strategy to get the DAZ Horse 2 into Poser as well as other DAZ figures ( like the tack for the horse). I've also used the Poser Format exporter inside DS 4.7 to export poses and that also works well.

This is so cool. I can't even get Genesis to work in Poser 2014 Pro. So, this is good discussion for me.

I use your script to clean up exported CR2s. Works like a dream. I use the same method with clothing, except dial in the morphs I want before export from DS. No UI slowdown. No DSON importer. Just native poser figures. I can load far more of them into a scene than I can of V4 because they start with 22k polys. Change the skinning method on the human figures to Poser unimesh and increase subdivision, and they're great. HD morphs show up at subdivision level 3. HD morphs are not as good as they are using Daz's subdivision method, but they work relatively well. Well enough, in any case, that I think they're worth adding to the figure. (and I have found NO substitute for Zev0's fantastic aging morphs). Your script basically just changed my entire workflow with Genesis/Genesis 2. It's a bit more work up front, but smooth as silk after. Thank you!!
