Subject: What Happened to the Poser Interface Bucket?

pumeco ( ) posted Wed, 04 February 2015 at 3:06 PM · edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 9:47 PM

Does anyone know how to change the colour of the interface?

I remember in earlier versions we could select the Bucket Tool and simply click on a part of the interface and it would change the colour of the interface to whatever colour you selected.  I'm clicking but nothing happens, no colour selector pups up.

I'm wondering, have they removed it or changed the way it's done in this new dockable interface?

I haven't seen that since at least version 7 (and I'm not even really sure about 7).

New? You mean six years ago?

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

@Laurie
I think I had it in Poser 5, but the only version I'm 100% sure about is Poser 3.

@Baggins
True, lol, but it's still the new interface compared to the old non-dockable interface :-P

I used to have mine a sort of blue/purple colour, looked really nice!
The default is pleasant enough, but it's a shame if they've removed the interface bucket.

Poser 4 had it for sure. Not sure about after that (I skipped version 5). I'd kinda like it back too ;).

I haven't seen a way to do that since they decided to go with the "3DS Max Professional Gray." I wouldn't be surprised if there was an xml file or some such that one could alter, though. (Maybe they left the hook in a config file, just for funsies, and didn't put in a gui for it, for not-funsies?)

I just tried the bucket tool in PP2014 EX. I click and hold down left button, and the colour pallet chooser window pops up. My mouse cursor disappears and I can't do anything !  I click again, and the colour palette disappears, and the normal workspace remains.

Online Now!

You have to play with the file 2600_utility.psd in the Runtime->ui folder. There's loads of layers and I can't remember which ones I had to adjust.

This crop of my altered 2600_utility.psd shows the bits I've coloured to get my Poser interface my desired shade of green. However, I haven't been able to change the AIR library pallette to the same colour.

Wow, I didn't expect to see that, I always thought Poser's interface was hidden in a resource file (like it is with Bryce).

Looks like it might even be possible to skin and arrange the complete interface then (it has XML files as well), pretty cool.  I just Goolged for 'Poser Interace Skins' and didn't find a single thing - which is surprising considering how popular skinning is with other things like Windows and Media Players etc.

Anyway, this is a very pleasant surprise, thanks for the tip! :-)

sorry I'm in dire need of rose tinted specs :-(  if only life was so simples as editing a file somewhere ;-)

whats wrong with grey ?? its nice and neutral

Nothing wrong with Grey, I like the default, I was just curious whether they'd removed it or whether it's just done differently since the interface change :-)
That area near the bottom-right of the viewport would be an ideal place for an extra colour-dot to set the interface!

It sounds like you have revealed the possibility of an entirely new product genre for Poser. :) (Though, it's worth noting that Poser's licensing may limit what one could develop for that particular sort of product line. Though, I don't think it would be difficult to obtain permission for such a thing, so long as the appropriate conventions were followed by the developer.)

Although I am happy with the Poser interface I am surprised there is not a product to allow the whole interface to be skinned.   I have so many products that make subtle changes to the interface that the default screen setup looks weird to me.  One of my favourites is the Slim Parameters Panel by Netherworks Studio give so much more information in a given space.  I have been using it so long that when I see a screen shot of the old style it looks wrong to me.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

You don't need permission from anyone to skin a product unless you use some of the original work in your design, such a policy would be unenforcable.  They can't stop you developing skins for Poser any more than a car manufacturer can stop Firestone from making tyres for their cars.  If you drew a set of replacement icons for Poser for example and wanted to sell them, there's not a thing they can do about it, and why would they attempt to - it's not their work.

But yup, it would be cool to see a whole new market develop around it being skinnable :-)

I'd like a dark interface with a Gothic theme please, something where chrome-plated skulls could replace the head icons, a crystal ball could replace the navigator, and skeleton hands could replace the hand icons!  The intermediate elements could be coated in red silk set against a black background!

Yeah, listen, and you could add a 'Roxie Button' as well!!!
When you click on the Roxie Button, it deletes all Vickies from the Runtime!!!

I like grey. It doesn't warp my color perception. And it's easier on the eyes than either black or white. I bought a pair of rose tinted glasses, actually. I'm taking medicine that causes mydriasis (abnormal dilation of the pupil), so staring at a bright screen sometimes leaves my eyes streaming like I'm cutting onions. The glasses make a big difference. (They also magnify -- like reading glasses -- but made for the distance to monitor, rather than distance to book.) But as I've never worn glasses before, the weight on the bridge of my nose is taking some getting used to.

Edit: I know... you were waxing poetic with a metaphor. :D But sometimes the literal thing really is what you need.

I got the Slim Parameters in the big December sale, mostly on your recommendation, AND... they are wonderful! Absolutely love them!

 "Edit: I know... you were waxing poetic with a metaphor. :D But sometimes the literal thing really is what you need.", almost not quite ;-) tinted glasses would be a substitute for what I want/need but time is a healer so they say {not to derail but my mum died and I've been a pita since}

while I do like being able to customize the interface on proggys  it can make writing or reading tuts extremely difficult, poser isn't too bad for tuts partly because users cant make a totally different gui, my "normal" working blender has many changes from the default but on the odd times I do a tut I revert to default  [if peeps then want to use pie menus and NOT shortcuts there going to be 25% slower rofl ]

Boy am I glad you like them, hate to think someone spent real money on something I recommended and then hated it.

I think I just realised why no one has bothered skinning it.

Unless I've missed it, the navigator and other original Poser interface elements cannot be skinned, so you can't change the trackball and head icons for example.  There is alpha involved from the looks of it, so some of it will blend into what colours you set, but I don't think the actual elements are editable (trackball etc).  Looks like those original elements are treated the same way as in Bryce, hidden in a resource file or whatever.

Bummer, there goes my Gothic Poser interface fantasies :-P
