Subject: Making Chain mail in Blender

EClark1894 ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2015 at 11:44 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 4:13 PM

I need chain mail without a high poly count. I could obviously just create a few circles to form the mail. That seems tedious and in the end, could  lead straight to that high polycount I'm trying to avoid. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here's where i am now. I have a breechcloth and right now it's just cloth. anyway I can make it chain mail?file_76dc611d6ebaafc66cc0879c71b5db5c.pn

Here is one tutorial that I had remembered was on Blender Cookie for specifically modeling Chainmail http://cgcookie.com/blender/2012/08/09/creating-chain-mail-in-blender/ hopefully this will lead you to what you wish to accomplish

Good Luck

that is a good tut but once in poser the polycount is scary!! seem to remember a thread in poser section about making "faked" chainmail that may help if you can find it

I haven't seen the whole thing yet, so I'm also not sure how the particle part is going to play with Poser.

I've done a little checking and so far it looks like i may have to use a texure and bump map.

lol the particles WONT work in poser that's when you need to convert to mesh and the polycount goes gaga, I made a pot o'gold for one of my forums and first attempt I ended up with 4 1/2 million polys ohno poser wouldn't even load it ;-)

heres a link to a matmatic shader from BB

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/?thread_id=2722867&page_number=2#msg3220834

and heres some textures from freestuff

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/?search=chainmail&expression=freestuff_name

or you could follow the blender tut then bake! this maybe the best answer but probably also the most work ;-)

ps I hope they fix this forum soon  grrrrrr

(was in a rush when I posted links but have looked on wayback when I got home but no joy )
in the freestuff the texture by fictionalbookshelf is pretty good has some probs at seams and edges but I have it tiling in blender so maybe with some time in paint proggy it can be sorted, I'm looking at armour for dogs so was wanting chainmail anyhow ;-)

Thanks fighter, that may actually be the best way to go on this. Especially if I make it  Poser Cloth room compatible.
