Subject: Interesting way to kill the Poser/Daz pirates.

Just lost a lengthy post to this forum software, somehow. Guess that's just the way things are...

Copyright does expire. There are a great many assets that have ended up in the public domain that were created after 1923. So there is some chance that the above hypothetical is, in fact, public domain. If so, no piracy.

Here's an explanation for the US.  Interesting , but it may give you a headache... ;) http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ15a.pdf

Additionally, Audio recordings prior to 1972 are covered under state law, which are perpetual copyrights in most cases.

Thanks WandW, already have a roaring toothache so what's a little headache? ah, chronic pain... love it. :(

pumeco ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 8:31 AM

Get it pulled, Primorge, better than getting gum disease by avoiding it.
I hate dentists, but on the odd occasion it had to be done, I just got it over and done with.

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:01 AM

My current employer doesn't provide healthcare, which is pretty funny considering that I spend my days and nights using all manner of heavy construction machinery or on a scissor lift 20 feet in the air. It's all very mercenary, an independant contractor. It does afford me certain types of freedoms (and wow, the characters I rub elbows with), but alas, medical attention isn't one of them. Sometimes I miss being a union employee.

Kinda saving money to upgrade my digital art arsenal, so when I get hurt... I usually just throw some duct tape on it. Guess I have peculiar priorities.

You see, I have a stubborn resistance to playing the system... or even attempting to interact with the system. To me, the daily drudgery of life is a necessary evil, all I really care about is art and artists or whatever project I'm working on at the moment. Perhaps I'm a kook, or some other negative moniker, but it's set in stone.

Severely off topic here, don't really have the desire to upset the powers-that-be at 'rosity because I value this community.

pumeco ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:19 AM · edited Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:24 AM

Well tie the bloody thing to your heavy construction machinery then, whatever, just get it pulled otherwise it'll just make your life hell when it gets worse.

Option 1:
Get it pulled, no more pain and get a free visit from the Tooth Fairy.

Option 2:
Don't get it pulled, suffer pain now, suffer more pain next time, even more the time after that - and then get two teeth pulled instead.

Two years ago I was actually walking around with a small split on my shoes, used to get wet feet every time it rained.  I should really have bought some new shoes at the time, but it went towards some parts I needed instead - so I know about feeding a passion.  But your health comes before that, because without your heath, you won't be wanting to indulge in your passions.

That said, I think you should create a work of art while you're cursing your tooth, that could be interesting and pretty horrific looking :-D
Capture the pain :-)

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:26 AM

Was actually really thinking of just getting a pair of needle nose pliers and pulling the damned thing myself, it's rather loose. Used to know a guy in SF, a painter, who did that. He had a little mint container with a few teeth saved in it... oh, did I mention that I know (have known) some peculiar fellows?

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:32 AM

I'm working on something as we speak, pumeco. We've been rather sporadic at work lately (some weeks 70 hours, others 20)... which is fine by me, gives me more time to indulge my interior landscape.

pumeco ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:40 AM · edited Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:40 AM

Looking forward to seeing the art, but be careful about pulling the tooth yourself because it's likely to break and leave the root inside, then you got problems.
I know this because my sister used to be petrified of the dentist, in the end it was worse for her, because they had to drill to get the root out.

Surely it doesn't cost that much to get a tooth pulled in the USA, aren't you supposed to be all super-advanced and stuff?
Anyway, it's getting OT again, just be aware of the risks in pulling it yourself, that's all I'm saying :-)

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 9:48 AM

Thanks for your concern, and yes... back on topic.

Not necessarily. Someone might own the copyright to that printed hard cover edition, but not to the content within in. Think about the fact that people still print and sell Shakespeare's work, even though it's freely available in a horde of places.

Really good point, Keith.

AmbientShade ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 10:24 AM

True. I thought about that after the fact. There doesn't seem to be a publisher listed on the page without digging deeper.

But the artist just died in 2002, which wasn't that long ago, so it's also possible that his surviving relatives hold the copyright, if there are any relatives. There are also two or 3 other artists listed along with.

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 10:31 AM

I wouldn't doubt that the copyright to Tom Sutton's work is held by some entity, considering he's not a (the) hypothetical artist.

pumeco ( ) posted Fri, 27 March 2015 at 10:33 AM · edited Fri, 27 March 2015 at 10:37 AM

I believe the same is true with classical music, all that famous stuff is apparently copyright free.  I believe you can effectively create your own performances of those peices, and you would even own the copyright to your version, but not to the composition you had recreated.

In other words, you can't stop anyone else doing what you did yourself, and that's good, because you shouldn't be allowed to do so anyway.

it's not unlike the licence Blender is under I suppose (to an extent).  You can take it, you can change it, you can even sell it at a profit, but you can't stop others making use of and doing with your contribution, what you have done with theirs.  And this in itself brings up an interesting way to make money even from a free product, because if you look on Amazon you will find physical analogue books all about learning Blender.

They sell even at fairly high prices, and they get good reviews.
They sell because it's what people want, in effect, a high quality printed user guide.

Blender just grows and grows, so that means more and more opportunity to use a digital product (Blender) to sell a physical product (an analogue book), it's a perfect example, that is, another example of the analogue world being there for you when you've finally had enough of getting screwed-over by digital.

There are countless videos and tutorials for Blender on the web, likely more than for any other 3D program in existence.  It still doesn't stop people paying generous amounts of money for a physical book to learn from.  Because sitting down with a coffee and flicking through the pages of a printed book, is much nicer than surrendering to Adobe's PDF crap - so much so that people are prepared to pay for the priviledge.

They're selling their analogue books, releasing volume after volume after volume.  And when you're done with it, you can sell it on, give it to a charity, do whatever the hell you like with it - and that's exactly how it should be.

@RorrKonn
Spot on mate, but unfortunately, people of your (and my) country are the ones responsible for letting it get to that state, people don't rebel enough.

  • If you sit on your asses tolerating crap like Apple, that's what you get, you get a world they're in control, and you aren't.
  • If you you sit on your asses tolerating mechinisms such as Adobe is putting out, that's what you get, and sure enough it's spreading like a cancer.

People's future kids are going to look back one day and wonder what the fuck you were all playing at, letting these bastards take away what your ancestors lost thier lives fighting to protect.  The world is so fucking sad, corrupt, and pathetinc right now, that I don't even want kids, I mean how sad is that?

I don't want kids because constantly trying to protect them from all this Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, Facebook and Google bullshit, would be quite a chore, and frankly, life's just too short, I shouldn't have to waste my life trying to protect others just because these bastards are allowed to run rampant.  The solution is simple, don't use their products or services.  That's all people need to do, simply avoid them, they're a business and like any busieness that doesn't earn money, they're dead.

Dead as a Dodo.

  • If everyone cancelled their subscription, Adobe are dead.
  • If everyone refused to buy the next wave of spyCrap, Apple would be dead too.

I can't remember exactly where I read this, it was a comment someone left on a YouTube video (about iPads or iPhones I think).  Apparently a young couple and their little girl were in a doctors waiting room, waiting for their name to be called out.  In the middle of the room was a table with magazines on it.  And get this, the little girl went to the table and picked-up one of the magazines, and you know what she did?

She started swiping her fingers over it like it was an iPad, hoping the page would change for her, she knew how to use an iPad but didn't have the basic knowledge to simply turn the fucking page of a real book.  The parent simply commented that she thought it was "So cute!".

I almost spewed bucket-loads at the very thought of it, I was even tempted to surrender my identity to Google and join YouTube just to rant at that pathetic excuse for a parent.  Can you imagine, that poor girl, she can barely fucking talk and she's already prime candidate for the upcoming slave-race, and all thanks to her gullible parents.  I don't think I've ever wanted to bash sense into someone as much as I did when I read that comment - you have no idea.

When that poor girl thinks "book", she thinks of that manipulative, corporate-controlled pile of shit instead of an actual book!

And I don't care what way people look at it, the fact that the girl picks-up a book and tries to "swipe" it like an iPad, is a danger sign, it's a sign of how far this bullshit really has gone.  What would have been better is if she'd found a dead iPad on the table being used as a coaster, and tried to flip the pages like you do in a real book - know what I mean?

Pathetic, bumbass parents - they're an absolute disgrace to the human species, cause our species are normally renowned for our intelligence!

there be parts of the comic I doubt would pass most TOS.  might be to different rated versions of the comic.

The Duck webcomics is a cool free webcomics hosting site... Don't know if you're familiar with. They host all genres of comics, including an 'adult' section so I won't link. I'm sure there are other such sites... I've also seen quite a few comic creator blog sites. As for the guy in the video, I don't care what he says either, I posted it because I agree with what he says, and I agree with what he says, because he's right!
That's exactly how the world has gotten, all I see when I walk through the city are people with their heads down, rushing around, speaking to spyPhones :-D

They're so used to doing it now, that if an entire road of buildings they pass every day was knocked down and rebuilt, they wouldn't even notice.  Hey, where did that building come from?  They built it last year dude, what planet have you been on?  Take your eyes off your spyPhone for a second, better still, throw it in the ocean where it's death is guaranteed.  The corporations have these people exactly where they want them.  Rushing around like little slaves, making money for them.  You only have to watch the mannerisms of that fat guy who does the Apple keynotes, as he walks around the stage.

Not necessarily. Someone might own the copyright to that printed hard cover edition, but not to the content within in. Think about the fact that people still print and sell Shakespeare's work, even though it's freely available in a horde of places.

Shakespeare's work is "out of Copyright" because it's three-hundred years old... Copyright has nothing do with someone selling a "hard cover edition," as long as the Copyright Holder has authorized them to create and sell such an edition. However, if the Copyright has expired, as is the case in the above example, than anyone can reproduce it. However, in the case above, the creator of the product owns  the entire product, including what is between the covers, but can not claim Copyright on the actual contents.

Copyright is there to protect the rights of creators and to encourage further creation by making it possible for creators to profit from their work. However, it does not last forever. The reason that Copyright expires is that not only should the creator profit from their work, but that work should also be able to benefit everyone. Oh, and it's also extremely difficult to justify protection in perpetuity.. There are also "Acceptable Use" issues that Copyright must obey, in order for society to receive the most benefit from the work of its members. (Usually targeted towards intellectual discussion of copyrighted works, for educational purposes.)
