Subject: Problem with shadows in a final render "glowing" orange. Poser prod 2014

darknewt ( ) posted Mon, 13 April 2015 at 2:31 AM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 9:41 AM

Hello, I am not sure if this has been asked and answered but I tried to search for a solution but no dice.   Here is a close up of a final render where a shadow is not rendering correctly.  It should be a dark to black shadow instead the shadow "glows" orange.  I was hoping that the render would be fine without postwork.  This was rendered in poser pro 2014 with gamma set to off.  Any Ideas?

might be scattering if your material includes sss. The other thought is you have some self lighting materials, try turning off all lighting and doing a render to see if anything is displayed

Indirect lighting turned on will do that when diffuse strength is higher than about 0.8.

If you are using IDL, try lowering the diffuse values on your materials to 0.90 or 0.85. SnarlyGribbly's scenefixer will do this for you for your entire scene. It's a free python utility...

Sorry BadKittehCo. Crosspost.

I believe the kind of amplification you've got there is due to the render setting for IDL Intensity being above 1. It needs to be lower - I usually use .65.

A wild guess.
You used an older light setup, and then checked IDL to ON.

IDL "adds" the Indirect Diffused Light to your scene, so automatically, you have overexposure and you have to reduce the direct light settings.( Or reduce the number of lights ) .
There is only ONE sun out there.

Also check for, and remove, ambient in your shader setup. Some old style texture and material setups come with ambient on the skin.
This is a NO-NO for human skin in the most recent Poser render versions when rendering with IDL+GC.

It's not ambient - there is glow only in proximity to another surface, and the color is the intensified skin color multiplied with itself many times, indicating lots of bounces.

Thank you all for your input! I was able to solve the problem by toggling SSS off.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 13 April 2015 at 2:17 PM

I'm unsatisfied with that answer or conclusion. Turning off one of the most important features of a modern skin shader is hardly solving the problem - you introduced a new one - you're missing SSS.

it also shouldn't be black (0,0,0) shadow with IDL.  they can advise if you post screenshot of scripts/partners/d3d/render FF settings.

Ok point taken  ..I will get a chance to work on this again tomorrow. I will give an update then.

You could select the figure, go to Body, and try unchecking "Light Emitter"

Most of the newer textures, or EZ Skin textures go to Alt Diffuse, which is the same thing as going to Ambient with the level set at 1.
Also, sometimes a light set to No Shadow will go through a mesh and show up on the other side, turning on shadows and setting at something like .1 or .2 can help with this.

Pretty certain Bagginsbill has this one nailed down. In terms of sheer knowledge and proven innovation with IDL he basically wrote the gospel by which we use the function in Poser today.

While this statement is true, it's not the whole truth. You don't get glowing from ambient or alt_diffuse if you have a lighting node plugged in. The channel is presenting what you plug in. If you plug in a constant, then you get a constant. But we're not doing that with alt_diffuse. We're plugging in the scatter and blinn nodes, so that the lighting modulates the output. So - using alt_diffuse incorrectly can be the cause of glow, but it is not the cause here.  Since we're all dealing with multiple unknowns here, don't add disinformation or it will become a wildly unproductive conversation.

Disinformation- wildly unproductive conversation?

Sure thing, boss.

Since almost every physical shader I've ever made uses alt_diffuse and mine are the most physically correct shaders available for Poser, and they don't glow (i.e. emit more light than arrives), yes, what you said is disinformation.

The EZ skin shader was originally constructed by me and published in a series of extensive explanatory articles at runtimedna. Perhaps you would enjoy reading them to see how the shader works?
