Subject: 'Tis for the GLORY #14 'Splats'

Wonga is the Champion from the last challenge and has issued an excellent, no-holds-barred challenge subject. 

So... The challenge subject this week is .... SPLAT!

do with what you please :-)

For those that don't know, a Splat (also known as a Billboard or Sprite) is a single 4 sided polygon to which you apply a texture map with an alpha channel. How are these used? Adding clouds to sky, people to crowds, trees and grass to landscapes, explosions to space scenes, swarming insects to hapless victims, etc. 

Post any questions you have because this is a great learning subject. 

**Also, to accommodate all of our stupidly busy lives, the deadline for this challenge is Saturday, July 4, 12 midnight Hawaii time.

I thought that the splat was rather as in this test that I placed on Youtube, but ok.

Here, I used some “splats” to build the plant of cannabis behind Jimi Hendrix.

Ha! Nice little RealFlow test. BTW, Blender also has a fluid solver if you are interested and if RF is out of the financial range. 

Good example of 2D splats with the plant texture. I'm really looking forward to see what people play with in this challenge.

Since Splats always point at the render camera, they are perfect for using texture maps that have alpha channels and then replicating. This is just the stock terrain with 4 splats that each have a different texture map.

The file size is 400K and it rendered in 90 seconds with anti-aliasing set to .5.

Rain of fire created by applying a tracer sprite and a gun flash sprite to a splat in a replicator.

I used Splats on this one for what looks like glowing orbs. I may try something like this again but make it look like insects flying over a meadow.

I seriously have nothing but Jimmy Hendrix's Purple Haze in my mind now. But that's not a bad thing.
