Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 7:38 pm)
It looks like anytime a thread consumes more than two pages we get a series of post thrashing this or that, Sorry but is it that hard for the average person to stay on the thread topic. Even the OP requested us to not trash this or that, or start some flaming posts, and yet the trashing still happens..
Now to stay on topic.. I use V4 primarily because she is easy to work with, and I have an extensive runtime library of some 300+gb of V4, items to use for her in Poser.
Although I exploited a few funds for a V5 pro pack and DSON to try V5 out, I found the process too time consuming, So I went back to V4. Does V4 have mesh flaws, of course she does, and so BTW does the new V7 from images I view. I am however skilled enough to correct minor flaws using post work tools and I still produce work for my clients in a timely manner. And as long as I can find fresh content from vendors who still produce V4 items I will continue to support them. Yet sadly I'm discovering less V4 content in the store in favor of DS Items.. So a plea to any vendor reading this... Please do not abandon the V4 consumers. Not asking you to give up creating DS products, but how difficult is it to offer a V4 version at the same time?

V4 + G1/G2 can share the maps effort provided that you add the requirement for the user to have bought the appropriate UV layouts. In any other case it is a complete duplication of effort.Does twice the work bring twice the revenues? Stonemason thinks not, since he has completely dropped Poser specific support.
I understand: you (plural you) like to have only positive coments. Like:
"I like V4 because she is well done, well supported and I've allready bought tons of stuff for her"
"Yeah, me too"
"yeah, same here"
"same here"
"same here"
"same here"
[ten pages later]
"same here"
"same here"
What else is the purpose of this thread?
Why branding any different opinion and point of view as insulting or trolling?
you know if you all took the time you all spend fighting on the forums.
you could take that time to make ya characters better or even make ya own characters.
it be more $$$ in it then fighting.

Can Roxie be morphed to look like V4?
That would solve everybody's problems wouldn't it?
a Roxie V4 morph would be easy but not legal but it's not so much her looks .it's she can't use every ones 1,000,000 ZB of Vicky stuff they all ready have.
if we mapped and sectioned name parts of Roxie like V4 so V4's stuff would work on Roxie.that would help.
but we can't do that cause it would be breaking V4's copyrights.

No dount you'll think I'm being deliberately ittirating, but I'm serious, what on earth happened to the shoulders and armpits?
Roxie doesn't bend like that!
@RorrKonn
I often wonder, what if they spent as much time just generally 'being nice' and offering each other free Roxie morphs on the Poser forum?
What if a virutal deadline existed, just for fun, and the Poser fans had to challenge themsleves to release at least 10 morph sets between them in a week. The challenge could be, either we release 10 Roxie morph sets between us within 7 days, or we lose. If we win, then Poser rules, if we lose then DS rules. Now that could be incentive, but of course, that sort of spirit doesn't exist here (it exists on the DAZ forums for V4, but not here for Roxie).
But if that spirit existed here, what would we get as a resut if it worked would be:
But what can ya do!
@Prixat
Indeed, and with all this shape-shifting technology around you would think such a practice would be widespread by now, but nope!
Too much love for V4 due to being too idle to understand the benefits of Roxie (an efficient 'minimal' mesh that works perfectly with Poser's subdivision).
V4 does not, therefore Poser users should think M I N I M A L meaning Poser users should think "Roxie" :

As a new convert to Poser (January this year), I always thought the Daz/Poser wars were just about what program you used. Having looked at these forums, I have discovered it goes far deeper than that. It appears that unless you use Poser and only Poser native figures etc, you are an outsider and don't belong here. Well that is fine with me but you will find with this attitude, you will not attract new people and the community will dwindle and die.
Now the question was "Why are you still using V4?"
When I started in 3D in January 2010, I downloaded the free basic version of Daz Studio3 and V4 came with it. She was the first figure that I used and over a period of time I built up quite an affection for her and spent a small fortune on characters, clothing etc for her.
Then along came Genesis and V5. Poor old V4 got pushed to the sidelines and I heavily bought into this new figure. We all know how quickly that was superseded and I personally refused to buy into this new version, as to me it was going to be a money making merry-go-round, having to purchase and support each new incarnation of Victoria.
Being a content Junkie, I reverted to using V4 and started purchasing all the great content for her that I had missed while supporting Genesis, as well as the new products that are still being released.
Being fed up with having to keep altering the materials to make them work in Daz Studio, in January this year I came over to the dark side and purchased Poser 10 and quickly upgraded to Poser Pro . Now I am purchasing all the Poser only content that I couldn't use before.
V4 is not perfect, but then who is. She has the largest amount of content for any figure and the speed at which new ones are coming out, I don't think she will ever be beaten.
To me, she is an old friend and I for one will continue to use her and support the vendors who still make content for her.
Now I have had my say, I will leave you all to your petty bickering and try to find somewhere that a Poser and V4 user is welcome.

Well welcome to the world of 3D I hope you enjoy your art whatever software you use. As to the forums, if you stick around will find that there are only a small number of combatants who basically say much the same thing irrespective of the title of the thread. The bulk of the people, or should I say flock as we were talking about sheep, tend to have a basic procedure of being interactive in a thread while it is useful and informative, moving to lurk mode when the usual suspects become involved and then abandoning the thread when the wars start. The only downside of this is it can seem that the majority are involved in the wars when it is far from the truth. I hope you will stick around long enough to decide there is something to be learned from the threads even if you do have to find a way of making it work for you. If someone becomes really tiresome there is always the ignore button.
Whatever happens enjoy your art and leave the wars to others, it is only a distraction.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

"I would be happy to share for example my Janet morph, but ...
Smith Micro will not allow me to share the whole Janet-for-Roxie .pmd
and Poser does not provide a tool to produce a .pmd and inject pose with selected morph channels."
I am a little curious about this statement because .pmd files only contain delta data, unless you created the pmd from a non-blank character and included poser distributed morphs. Create a FBM, load a blank character, load the fbm and save with binary morphs on should give you a clean .pmd with no poser morphs.
For the On-topic part of the post:
I use dawn whenever possible, but use V4 for Items/morphs that I can not duplicate with Dawn.
Bill
People that know everything by definition can not learn anything
This thread is getting too far off-topic and hostile in nature. I don't see anywhere where the OP asked about SM's business practices.
@FVerbass: As long as you aren't redistributing any of Roxie's original coding or parts (ercs, jcms, morphs, etc), then there's nothing in Poser's EULA that prevents you from distributing your custom Roxie character. The figures exist to serve as a base to build new content on.
There are several utilities available that make it easier to create custom character sets for any figure. And you can do it yourself by hand just by following various tutorials available on the subject. Dimension3D has a program here in the store called Poser File Editor that helps with all that. It just takes a bit of time to learn how the program works and what needs to be done.
As for the original subject of the thread: I use V4 and M4 because they are the figures that I do commission work for. I don't get commission requests for any of the other figures available, but I'd be glad to do work for any of them if the requests came in. For my personal work I use P6 James and a couple others. I like James the best because he is the most anatomically accurate of all the native poser figures so far, he just has some issues with his rigging and mapping that are a pain to deal with.
I too use use another figure from before the Apocalypse so I know what you're saying. That said, the answer is simple for me.
Support. I loved Sadie. Some support but not near enough.
Support. I still primarily use Aiko and convert. As soon as I see an Item for Aiko 3 it's in my runtime within minutes.
Genesis 1 and 2 has some really neat stuff and a lot of support but DAZ isn't really supporting Poser as they ruined the DSON importer somehow and haven't gotten around to fixing what wasn't broke. The New Genesis 3? I would love using it but I wish to use it in my favorite App and that isn't happening soon.
Still, because I got on the V4 bandwagon rather late, for me, she's a wonderful figure. So are the others and I will get them sooner or later. I'm still wary paying a porn site to get Natu and Haru or I would get them both despite the lack of support.
As far as any war is concerned, I do wish SM and DAZ worked a little closer together for the people. After all, Microsoft did help bail out Apple. Don't flame me, I just mean I want to use all the figures from the Hivewire Horse (with no saddle) to Dawn to Miki to Terai Yuki to Doctor Peterbilt. Don't limit me or force me to buy clothing I don't want so I can get a deal on clothing I do want for my figures. And I want backward compatibility...that is something that Dawn 2 offers right now. Suddenly I dont feel like an idiot for having spent a hundred or so in clothing that won't work on the new figure.
Agree too I'm using V4 only due this as I've lots of content for V4,unless vendors pull the plug on V4 then I'm staying with V4,I'm now trying to make few quick morphs in Blender for my V4 if I'm not happy,I've used on previous occasions some fixes on V4,but after learning how to create morphs is now this my past, but still I hate whole heartly UI of the Blender, which cnut created that,I just don't understand
Going with other figures will depends too,but now I'm staying with V4/V3 or A3 and will be using them,Poser native figures like Roxie and Allyson I'm using too for some scenes,Genesis I don't use, sometimes I do only tests or some quick tutorials, but that's it
If Poser will once support native Genesis then will good,if not then I'm OK with that,I will be rather without the G2 or G3 like going with DSON,which only slows down the PC,you can have best PC and still this will slow down the PC to crawl if you have there 2 and more Genesis
Thanks,Jura
I thought I used V4 for the morphs and clothing, then I looked at my gallery and realized that I had more Dawn renders than V4. I don't use realistic female figures that often though. I guess I'll have to start a separate thread complaining about the lack of weight mapped male, toon and child characters for Poser.
One thought on an earlier Pumeco comment. The best way for a company/product to fail, especially in tech, is to say "this is how we've always done it". Kodak, Blackberry, Playstation, Quark Xpress, Pagemaker, American car manufacturers all failed or lost considerable market share by resting on their laurels. The list goes on and I only care because of the time and money invested in Poser and the number of favored products I've had to abandon.
I know I'm off topic but pleased to have my say before the thread is closed, lol.

@RorrKonn without access to sales figures I'm guessing Dawn isn't doing all that well. I see relatively few scenes featuring her and little forum chatter. I do see individuals who like her a lot though. I think she has a "cult following". Hivewire3D seems to be doing well though, to the extent that they've successfully added to the family by creating a male and child figure as well as a horse and soon, elephant. Content continues to be made for these figures albeit, slowly.
@Zev0 The art by Shiba Shake proves that the artist is more important than the figure. It should go without saying. The expression also gives lie to those who claim Gen 4 figures can't do realistic expressions. It's a poor artist who blames his tools.

Good example, won't make any difference to people's thinking though!
@Willyb53
The creator of Dawn has clearly gone to lengths to make her compatible with both programs and she's a nice looking figure, so thumbs-up to him for that.
Normally I'd be all over Dawn, she even looks a bit 'Retrobabe' as default (which is always a good thing in my opinion). The only reason I never bothered with her is I already have Roxie, and even when I don't use Roxie, my recent plaything is a figure I'm developing in Blender as I learn it, so although I like Dawn, I don't really have a need for her.
@RorrKonn
As you like chains, would you like to see a really cool Roxie Render, one where she's completely naked and chained to a cross?
Nice moody lighting, plenty of grime, plenty of chains, plenty of smoke and atmosphere, plenty of awesome!
And what about dirt and dust sticking to the dried blood on her skin and wind-swept hair!
A render that totally kicks Vickie ass - would you like to see it?

The same conversation. A different person designed how the new figures would be set up (unimesh and ExP) and designed V4 on that. What it could do made it more popular than the name itself. That same person did the genesis setups as well as well as how tools would be made to generate content for it (using concepts from unimesh and ExP). That's why Dawn is stuck with the V3 look with weightmapping rather than a full system to compete... and basically content is made by very few people because of demand... those things have to work hand in had to be successful.

It is a very good render and as you say, it makes the point that the artist is always more important than the figure. Clearly Gen 4 can have realistic expressions, in the hands or really great artist most things are possible but Poser and V4 is also used by a vast number of people who are not really good artists, me included. I can get much better expressions than I use to with V4 (thanks to a few tips I picked up in the forums) but as she is my go to figure it would be good if realistic expressions were just little easier. One of the reasons I use V4 is because I can achieve so much with her but I am also trying to put some feeling into my renders and I do find the expressions a struggle at times

Why are you still using V4? That question just made my toes curl.
Why wouldn't we use V4? It's not like we doing anything wrong by using her.
There is more then a decade worth of content and resources available and still new add-ons for V4 are developed by many!
The more content the more chance you find the objects to visualize your concepts.
It's like drawing with colorpencils, there are packs with 10 colors, but those cases with 300 colors is what is most fun!
So in my opinion...A new figure that can use V4 clothing has an advantage over other more recent figures who cannot.
To over and over again buy the same content for a different figure is just a vicious circle.

I like the analogy of the colour pencils, I think that is what some users do not grasp fully, it is not the sheer amount of products that are available for V4 but the flexibility it gives. A very large percentage of my renders that use V4 are sci-fi related, yet there are probably only a dozen, if that, good sci-fi outfits for V4. Using the vast catalogue of V4 outfits I can mix and match to create my own outfits. From twenty or thirty outfits I can have an almost endless number of sci-fi or futuristic looking styles. No other figure gives me that size of pallet to work with.

I don't think Dawn has a V3 look. I think she has a Dawn 1 look. Some people like it. Me included. They also included extra bones in the spine (called abdomen, chest and neck in the Poserverse) and an articulating jaw. These are features that V7 has also adopted. So perhaps she's ahead of the game in some respects. One thing HiveWire3D did right is build a marketplace to support her and her family. It took Daz 7 versions to get where it is now. If the marketplace can succeed a Dawn 2 may appear. I've seen vendors and artists do amazing things with Dawn but some have done some hideous work. Too bad they can't afford to drop some of those substandard products.
There is no new figure that gets buzz beyond the first couple months other than Vickies. There probably never will be. I'm hoping HW has prepared for a marathon rather than a sprint. As it is she still has as much or more content than the other contenders, full morph packs, creature morphs, ethnic skins and morphs and some unique clothing I've not seen elsewhere. The Poserverse would do well to support HW in their efforts.

Point taken Hornet3d. There are different skill levels of Poser users and they all should be taken into account. I'm not sure what beyond practice, desire, and tips from other users could change that.

Actually v6 had all the bones including the jaw, so saying V7 followed dawn is incorrect. Only thing that was different was the 2nd neck bone in Dawn. But that's getting away from the topic again. Also on the subject of buzz, buzz doesn't carry a figure, what it can do does. That's why V4 stayed in the market as long as she does. For a figure to replace that, it has to do at least the same, plus add new features that will make users want to switch.

Funny how you knew there was a sign, there is indeed a sign but it says "Girl for Sale" and it's on a board at her feet.

Yeah I know, some people are pretty damn awesome at inventions, evil geniuses, and actually, I'll have to look into who invented it cause the render is actually a sort of previsualisation for an indie I have planned. I want it to have genuine viability despite it being fantasy, so I'll definitely look into that.

I'm hoping for death threats cause I have plans for them, but in this instance, I was hoping you'd just say "yes", cause if you'd said yes, I was going to recommend you load Roxie into the viewport and give it a go yourself then. The point being that if you (or anyone else) did that, meaning you attempted the sort of scene I described and posted it, I reckon no one who attempted it would be any less impressed with what they achieve with Roxie than they would if they'd used V4. Spoilsport!
It's ok RorrKonn, I'm just teasing, I must be in a teasing mood today!
I think it must be because there's a limit to how many Vickies with perfect nail polish a person can tolerate in a single week.
Guys, what is the point?
I have a ton of figures, and V4 happens to be one of them. I helped out on V4~WM, so yes I obviously use it now and again. But it is not the last character I will ever use.
I tried my best to help out with Dawn, but people slaughtered it rather quickly. She is still in my Runtime and I still use her now and again.
I tried with a few versions of Antonia as well.
Does anyone want to guess what this taught me?
Here is a small list........
Lots of people seem to have all the answers for this, but the fact remains that people are going to use whatever Figure they want too in Poser.
Arguing about it is beyond pointless, because you are not paying for anyone else's Runtime choices.
Your make art choices are going to be different than just about everyone else's even if you both use the same Figure.
This thread should have been locked a long time ago. Many people have laid out many reasons why they still use V4 and people are saying otherwise in many posts. Some of the posts are so off topic it is comical.
If you know what they next Poser character should have, then by all means make it and be done with it.
We will see how well it stacks up to any user, no matter what figures they use now.
Feel free to flame me, bash me, bash my work, etc. Because in the end there are some you that know far more about it than any else could, and have contributed basically nothing to Poser other than biased opinions....
Ironic isn't it..............

Same here, I'm glad I don't work for SM, I'd be too embarrased to show myself or have my name on the credits if I did.
Some people take pride in what they put their name to, while others will put their name to anything.
Pumeco, I am proud to work with the SM team. There is a huge amount of talent there that far exceeds anything you would ever give them credit for.
Most of your judgments against them are based on how you would do things, and nothing more. You can argue their success if you want to, but even you bought it.
I know, you say you wont upgrade, but you will.... Roxie demands it, or else..........

"Roxie is ugly. Get over it"
Well my Roxie certainly isn't ugly, she's much nicer than any Vickie I ever saw, and come to think of it, the default Roxies aren't ugly either - so get over it!
