Subject: GENESIS 3 VS GENESIS 2

jacknimble ( ) posted Tue, 13 October 2015 at 3:22 AM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 4:58 PM

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just downloaded the program. Well I am downloading it. The download options confused me. I see a huge number of selections related to Genesis 2, and one character set for Genesis 3.

What is Genesis 3 or Genesis 2 exactly? I thought it was the character creation program, and so Genesis 2 = version. 2 So Genesis 3 is the most recent version of the software? But in that case, why is almost everything in the download Genesis 2?

Hi Jack you get around LOL I just answered your post on the iClone topic you raised.

In regard to your Daz you would be best to center your world around Genesis and Genesis 2 as that is what the RL Duf face keys are for. I don't think there is the key for Genesis 3 as yet since that is the newest release from Daz

Are you running iClone Pro or Pipeline? and have you got 3DXchange6 ?

Character Creator is for making characters for the software and or the store etc

iClone can use the Daz characters with a little adjusting Genesis 2 I found had a lower polycount so more efficent although occasionally the hair can get up there in count more than the character.

Yeah well I'm trying to figure out where to begin investing my time in all this so I'm kind of trying everything and getting quite confused along the way : p

What the heck is RL Duf face keys?

I just figured, it seemed strange if GEN 3 is their newest version, why most of what the download manager is offering me is GEN 2, and where do I download the GEN 3 software ?

There is only a Genesis 3 female currently you would have got that with your download. I think Daz will keep the supply of the Genesis 2 Male and Female going for a while yet. Genesis 2 is good character lots of items available for it.

The Duf Key The Reallusion Duf key is like gold. You set up your Genesis or Genesis 2 character in Daz get everything how you want it. Put the clothing on then get the key and drop it on the head of the character you will get a pop up saying the animation exceeds the current timeline do you want to extend click yes. Then your Genesis character with have full facial expression and lipsyncing capabilities for use in iClone. (In the Daz animation timeline change the total frames figure from 1710 to 1 or it will take forever to send it out) You export it out of Daz (FBX) after locking down every morph you have added or altered. (If you dont lock it down the morphs will not be at other end) Change the export rules to Genesis , Genesis 2 Male or Female depending on which you have set it to 'Ignore' then export it out to 3DX6 and maybe add some motion files. I don't worry about too many adjustments in there as it is easier in iC6. Export out of 3DXChange into iC6(That would be default so File>Export. In iC6 it will be so shiny it might slip off your screen you can select all the skin Ctrl(hold) and change the specularity from 100 down to about 24-29 this would be good starting point. Then adjust iris, pupils lips etc. And there you go piece of cake One Dazzie that will do as it is told and will accept MP3 or Wav files for speech

PS This looks worse in text than it really is

There are three versions of Genesis: Genesis, Genesis 2 and Genesis 3, all of them are free with Daz Studio. Genesis 2 includes 2 separate zips, Male and Female. Download all 4 of them because some characters are based on Genesis 1, some on Genesis 2 and some on Genesis 3. For example, Victoria and Michael 5 are based on Genesis 1, Victoria and Michael 6 are based on Genesis 2, etc.

Just my opinion... but Genesis lookes clayish, lumpish, not so good... but I liked that all clothes fit all characters. Genesis 2 looked really good, so I invested in characters and clothing; lots of nice choices. Genesis 3, no idea how it looks, but there is only the female character... The male character of nearly every line comes out about six months after the female character. I personally won't be investing in the Genesis 3 character right off the bat. The Genesis 2 character looked good enough... and I'm not re-buying all those morphs again. I bought all the morphs for Genesis, and then Genesis 2 came out and I grumbled while I re-bought, and now again? Nope. I'm good at Genesis 2, the characters are sufficient for my purposes.

Wow that's pretty crappy, that they obfuscate everything for all their new products?

I'm not quite sure I understand, though... do you mean that some of the genesis 3 characters won't work unless I ALSO buy the genesis 1 of the same character??

No, You don't have to buy Genesis 1, they are all stand-alone. But, that being said... morphs for Genesis 1 do not work for Genesis 2. But, sometimes, with a little tweaking, clothes from Genesis 1 will fit Genesis 2. Sometimes you can even get non-Genesis stuff to work with some tweaking. But.... morphs are the big deal, you can't make a good scene without them, and they are very character specific. I thought someone said a base genesis 3 female was being included in the newest studio... not sure... if so, it would be a good to check it out... wait, I'll just go look... Oh, yea, it says Daz Pro 4.8 comes with Genesis 3 starter kit. You don't have to buy anything to check out if you like Genesis 3. I guess I should upgrade and at least look at it. I'll probably stick with Genesis 2 though.

Ok, thanks for helping out. How long have the generations lasted? I see that generation 3 is newly underway. Does everything get updated once a year? Two?

One last thing, I see I have a basic child in my generation 1 folder, but not in the generation 2 or generation 3. I assume that's because it hasn't been made for generation 3 yet, but what about generation 2?

Online Now!

Do not refer to the Genesis series as anything remotely associated with the Generation series, they are completely different. Figures, like Victoria 4, Michael 3, Stephanie, Stephanie 3 Petite, etc, all belong to the Generation (Generation 1, Generation 2, etc). Figures beyond Generation 4 are strictly Genesis. Interchanging the terms will create utter confusion when seeking help in the forum.

I installed 4.8 Pro last night, and must say I am really impressed with the Genesis 3 base female that came with it, along with all the little new things in 4.8 Pro. But I didn't like the way it scrambled my smart contents all up. I liked the neat organization in 4.7, but the quality of the render in 4.8 Pro is amazing. The one thing I would like to see put back is the background image used to be conveniently located under the Edit drop down menu. But, all in all... the Genesis 3 figure was so nice, I can see myself buying one of the Genesis 3 pro bundles.

Roughly every two years has been the way it's gone, though that isn't of course a guarantee for the future.

@jacknimble You have asked about the basic child. The Genesis series you will use your morphing tools or vendor products(Morph packs) to achieve the younger characters so there was no need for Daz to supply a separate basic child. Daz give you the software and a basic starter kit it is up to you to build on it from there. As for Daz and the way obfuscate everything, it will become clearer over time and I am sure it is not 100% intentional on their part. They are not politicians.

LPR001, I applied the DUF key file on the head of Genesis 3 Female and opened G3F in 3DXchange but it seems some of the mappings for the facial morphs are not working. I keep getting is puckered lips when I tried to do a text to speech animation in iClone. What am I missing?
