Subject: Black Areas in Render

Nostricum ( ) posted Thu, 03 December 2015 at 6:44 PM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 2:21 AM

I have attached a render that illustrates my problem. The scene has a single light and all materials on all figures and props are set to a simple diffuse color. There are no nodes and all setting for other parameters are set to zero. These black areas do not show up in preview, only in renders. Any ideas?

The only time I've run into something that looked like this, it was because my computer's memory was getting low during the render. Doesn't seem like that would be the case with such a simple scene, though.

Hi @Nostricum- which forum were you looking to post this request in? I'd be happy to 'move' it to the correct spot!!

That looks like Poser judging from the ground in the picture. Like gmm2 said it could be low memory or the normals on the object have somehow been reversed.

Great- I'll move this to the Poser forum.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that's backward facing normals. Add groups to those polygons & then 'reverse normals' to see if that works for you first.

Or click "Normals_forward" in the material and they can stay reversed.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Thanks, Bagginsbill! I've never noticed that option in the material room. Love learning new stuff!

If "Normals Fowward" doesn't work, what value is the Specular Node set to? The diffuse? Sometimes, abnormally large Channel value settings can happen to materials upon import of an object and you have to reset them to Poser's conventions. It's easy to overlook this in the Spec channel, especially if you have the Preview window set to minimal settings.
