Subject: My Poser 10 has stopped working

(I am in England.) Yesterday (2 Jan 2015) my Poser 10 on my PC computer with WIndows 10 worked as usual.

Today, whenever I try to call Poser 10, the initial Poser 10 window with the smiling woman appears, but the stage display and its windows does not appear, and instead the Poser 4 run hangs as if it can't find a file, and then it halts with error display "Poser executable file has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Before, that happened only when I asked my Poser 10 to make a render that needed too much time or working-space resources. But now it always happens as my Poser 10 is starting, even if the ---.pz3 file's stage is empty,

I reinstalled Poser 10 twice, but the fault persisted. I then called Defraggler to defragment my PC; the run took many hours. The fault still always happens.

A curiosity :: each time that I reinstalled my Poser 10 from its disk today, it did NOT ask me for a serial number. (I have the serial number OK.)

I am using about a tenth of my computer's hard disk space.

Other programs which are not graphical, still work.

PLEASE HELP.

What is happening? I can't run my Poser 10 now.

If there is no cure except to buy Poser 11, how do I buy Poser 11?

It definitely is due to the Windows KB3132372 update

Details are described to get the program running again. This problem does not occur if the library preference is set to external because it uses Adobe Air, not Adobe Flash. However, scrolling with the mouse scroll button becomes erratic or won't function.

But how do I uninstall the Windows KB3132372 update? And how do I stop it being reinstalled? Or I must I wait shut out of Poser until Microsoft send a new Windows update to cure this bug? With me, WIndows updates come automatically like the weather or the traffic, not asking me for permission to install them, with nothing to say the serial numbers of the updates, or what each update does. I have plain Poser 10 (version 10.0.0.24941), not a pro version.

I never or rarely use IE to browse the web, but always Firefox.

I seem to currently have Windows 10.0.10586

That information is for Windows 7 users, but I have Windows 10, which does not have a Start button as described in the instructions.

Sorry. I didn't pay attention. Google helped me find that. Perhaps you can search for "uninstalling updates in Windows 10". I know there is a way to stop automatic updates in Windows 10 too. Maybe search for that also.

To Uninstall the Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372).

If you don't use the Windows 10 Start Button. Navigate to the Action Centre - mouse click on - All Settings - Update and Security - Windows Update - Advanced Options - View your update history - Uninstall Updates.

Type KB3132372 in the Search Installed Updates (Top right of Installed Updates window) and select click KB3132372 to uninstall. Close the Installed Updates windows.

If using Windows 10 Home you will need to download the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter' which can be found here - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

When downloaded locate the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter' - which will be download as - wushowhide.diagcab - and double click on it.

Click the Next - bottom Right.

the trouble shooter will search for update - when it's finished searching click the Hide Updates Box.

the trouble shooter will display a list of updates.

Mouse click on the selection box next to - Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372).

Click next and the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter' will hide the update until Microsoft update the patch.

Close the trouble shooter.

Hi, go to - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Near the middle of the page just above a Big Orange bar you will see a link that says - Download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package now.

Click on that link and download the wushowhide.diagcab to your computer, save it to somewhere you'll remember like the desktop or downloads folder.

Here are the instruction for running the 'Show or Hide trouble shooter'

Find the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter' - which will be download as - wushowhide.diagcab - and double click on it. Click the Next - bottom Right. the trouble shooter will search for update - when it's finished searching click the Hide Updates Box. the trouble shooter will display a list of updates. Mouse click on the selection box next to - Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372). Click next and the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter' will hide the update until Microsoft update the patch. Close the trouble shooter.

The risk would be that when using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge with the Adobe Flash Player you could potentially allow an attacker to take control of your system due to an exploit in Adobe Flash Player caused by their crappy code apparently. Adobe say the exploit is being used in limited, targeted attacks.

Anthony: You can uninstall the offending update, but Win10 will re-install it the next time it does updates. Just uninstall again.

Look in the control panel for System; open that and you should see a screen which identifies what version of Win10 you have. Here, Urania's version is shown as Win7Pro (64bit).

I have Windows 10 Home.

I did what adzan said (but not installing the 'Show or Hide update trouble shooter'), and KB3132372 was allegedly deleted, but it came back within a minute, and the Poser fault is still there, before and after I exited from Windows and restarted the computer. It is as seachnasaigh said would happen. Please hurry up Microsoft to issue another update to cure this bug. Thanks for your efforts.

It seems that new editions of Poser should stop using Adobe, but should have its own still and movie image displayer.

Does Poser 11 still work under Windows 10 Home without the bug described here? How much does Poser 11 cost?

Poser 11 and Pro 11 use a javascript library instead of the Flash/Air library. That isn't to say there aren't problems with the new library. Before you buy, I suggest you hop over to the Official Poser 11 forum and read the various threads regarding the library.

I just now called my WIndows 10 Home's Windows Update's "check for updates" and it says that I have all updates to date, and my Poser 10 still crashes out on start as before.

I have just shut my computer down and waited 10 seconds and restarted it, and my Poser 10 still crashes out on start as before.

The message before (by "nerd") directed me to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3133431, which directed me to https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/updates.aspx, which is all about WIndows 8 and Windows 7 but says nothing about Windows 10.

According to a friend who is well informed and I trust at another site, the fault is not that of Microsoft, but belongs to Adobe! It seems that any fix released by Microsoft will not work simply because the problem stems from an Adobe Flash Update that has been adapted to supposedly work with Windows 10! Certain applications that use Adobe Flash are suffering immediate crashes due to something in the update that was incorrectly written. Unfortunately it is affecting several versions of Poser up to and including Poser 9, Poser 10, and Poser 2014. Others are also likely affected: however, all versions of Poser 11 are unaffected, as they do not use Flash.

If PP2014 has been set to external Library in it's general preferences, it will still work normally. However, the Library scroll bars will behave erratically or not function at all.

I had heard that too, but as I do not have Poser 2014, I cannot testify to it's performance when you set it up that way. I just think this problem needs a permanent fix ASAP!

My "Update History" says that my last Windows updates were:

"Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3133431)" on 5 Jan 2016.

"Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372)" on 4 Jan 2016.

"Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372)" on 30 Dec 2015

*** the notorious faulty update, twice, because on 3 Jan 2016 I followed advice and uninstalled update KB3132372

"Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372) on 18 Dec 2015

and my Poser 10 (version 10.0.0.24941) still refuses to work. PLEASE what else can I try to get my Poser working???? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Poser 10 again?

But I first had the fault on 3 Jan 2016, before the KB3132372 update, unless there is a clash of timezones here.

The faulty update first came to my computer on 30 Dec 2016 allegedly, but started showing its effect on 3 Jan 2016 (by British time). Is there a time lag between the update coming onto my computer and that update being installed? Should I leave my computer running overnight?

Although I'm no expert, I think I read somewhere (maybe here at the Renderosity forums) that in order for the updates to take effect, the computer must be restarted, and when you uninstall the offensive update, you must restart your computer immediately after that. At least that last part has been posted by several here and elsewhere. I also read that the update reinstalls unless you download that update hide thingy mentioned earlier in this thread, and run it to hide the offensive update(s). Doing that supposedly ensures that the update won't reinstall on your machine.

If "update thingy" means wushowhide.diagcab, I tried it, and it listed 13 updates: 1 for my printer, 1 for my graphics adapter, 1 for my audio, 10 for "Intel - other hardware" and lists various hardware in my computer, and nothing about Poser or Adobe or Flash or Windows or anything that looks like KB3132372.

Timeline of events:

  • 30 Dec 2015: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372)

  • 2 Jan 2016: For the last time I used my Poser 10 successfully.

  • 3 Jan 2016: For the first time my Poser 10 crashed out on starting as described here: notice the 4-day delay after the first time that KB3132372 came.

  • 3 Jan 2016: I enquired on Renderosity Poser forum and followed advice there and uninstalled KB3132372

  • 3 Jan 2016 later same day: I shut my computer down and restarted it, and my Poser 10 still crashed out on start.

  • 4 Jan 2016: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372)

  • 5 Jan 2016: Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3133431)

  • 8 Jan 2016 c.6 am Greenwich Mean Time: My Poser 10 (version 10.0.0.24941) still refused to work. PLEASE what else can I try to get my Poser working???? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Poser 10 again? Or what?

Are you sure that Norton is not conflicting with the Windows 10 builtin protection software? I think it's called Defender, and it is an upgraded version of Microsoft Security Essentials. It actively monitors your machine. If you have another protection software, you need to check to see if it will work with Defender. Malwarebytes will.

My Windows Defender is currently switched off, because my Nortons is doing its job instead. Likely my Nortons switched my Windows Defender off.

Is Windows 11 affected by this bug?

You mean "Is Poser 11 affected by this bug?" The answer to that is "No." Poser 11 does not use Adobe Flash or Air. Poser 10, Poser 2014, and several earlier versions do use Adobe Flash, and that is why they are affected.

According to a PC World article I read, Windows Defender is the best overall protection available for Windows 10. As updates for Windows 10 are automatic and come in quite often, I would look into the effects of interaction between Windows Defender and Norton if I were you. It pays to know what is really happening, rather than hazarding a guess.

In my own experience I found that most different makes of protection software normally conflict with each other, even to the point of treating the others as malware. One that plays nice with most others is the aforementioned Malwarebytes (recommended). With Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, you should have really great protection.
