Hey everyone-

So, starting today, you'll see a brand new front page display. You'll find "Exclusive Products - only at Renderosity," "Featured Galleries," "What's Hot," as well as 'Tutorials,' 'Featured News,' and our most recent sales.

Please take a peek at the screenshots below:

Really? could the amount of advertising get any more in your face? That "new and improved' frontpage is not going to get me to purchase any more then I can, but it is going to make me avoid the front page now. I don't see 'community' on the front page anymore.

Where is the AOM, the Artist of the year etc? What's the point?

Amaranth ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2016 at 4:26 PM

LOL omg it's getting worse by the update, shakes head and sighs. I think I'm going to skip landing on the frontpage.

I could do without the sliders, but it's still quite an improvement over that jumbled mess that's been there for months. It's a step in the correct direction.

LaurieA ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2016 at 6:48 PM · edited Wed, 13 January 2016 at 6:49 PM

Yeah, really. At least I notice everything on the page (it's hard with all the sliding and moving stuff tho). With that awful page that's been there, I've seen basically nothing because everything was so uniform and packed in next to each other and the page was so long to scroll down thru. All it succeeded in doing was making me want to leave, which I did ;).

Giana ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2016 at 7:18 PM

oh, apologies, Laurie - my comment is not directed at you or your thoughts, truly... it is just my general response to the newest layout :))

Really? Wow! No sense of community too much advertising added? The first thing I saw when I viewed it was a beautiful art image promoting the Art Gallery of a member. That slider then loaded 2 (yes a whole 2) sale images, one for VOM and one for Poser 11 (which considering how many scream that they want Poser supported should be a good thing).

Under that large ads in a slider that promoted exclusive products, same as we've had for a long time with "Featured products". Under that ANOTHER slider of gorgeous artwork from the gallery featuring the use of a variety of softwares & photography before the last slider of What's hot.

On the side we see a link to a tutorial, a commentary article, featured news (which of course has the VOM sale because that's always on the front page) and another little notice about the Poser software sale. Sure perhaps the last 2 are a bit redundant but it's new.

Personally I think showcasing those gorgeous images as well as a tutorial and a commentary article like that scream Community. Sure there are ads for the store (which btw adblock doesn't block because they aren't those types of ads) but without the store there is no community or gallery to enjoy anyhow.

It's now sleeker, neater and far easier to view, that's coming from someone that has avoided the front page for a few years now.

It's definitely an improvement! I don't see any of these 'ads' some of you are talking about..

Razor42 ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2016 at 2:31 AM · edited Thu, 14 January 2016 at 2:35 AM

It definitely looks more orderly and I believe it is an improvement on the old landing page.

👍Like:

  1. The more orderly layout.
  2. The buttons to pause the revolving banners. Though the fact that it doesn't remember the setting when I revisit makes them a little redundant.
  3. The featured gallery section with pics
  4. The removal of the advertisement in the header

👎Dislike:

  1. Long load time.
  2. The supersized top banner that fills half my screen.
  3. The 11 advertisements. Though credit to you that they are all internal.
  4. The box transition on the top banner, please a subtle fade in out would be so much better.

All things considered it is step in the right direction. Nice work guys!

"The supersized top banner that fills half my screen."

Renderosity seems to have problems with size and scale... as i set here and look at my avatar that is the size of a dime...lol....

i like the featured gallery's...like the internal and exclusive support as well..."i am biased about that though ;)"

it is better..but please tune it down a little in scale and size and maybe a little less "movement"?......its got a frogger feel to it...lol.. and i agree about the box fade as well, its not needed...

LadyElf ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2016 at 3:25 AM

Well when I land there, the top banner or whatever it is takes up more then 50% of my 32 inch screen. Yes there is ONE count them one image from a member the rest is advertisement, at the top..as is the other things on the right side. Sorry doesn't 'scream' community to me.

My point is, if the VOM deserves spots on the front page, so does the AOM and the AOY. They all deserve to be on the front page.

Renderosity did just fine without a store for years, not saying there shouldn't be a store, I love the store, and with some tweaks it might work. But without community, there is no store and no money for the vendors. It's not just one or the other they are all important...a symbiotic although sometimes stormy relationship.

Lots of movement things are REALLY big and yes, our avatars are the size of a dime LOL!! (Just agreeing)

Giana ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2016 at 9:01 AM

i see pretty much the view that you described, LadyElf... it is more orderly, but the scale is too large, and the movement is a bit vertiginous for me...

Morana ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2016 at 9:48 AM

The supersize banner at the top takes up half my screen as well. But I was more concerned that the giant VOM banner I was hit with on opening the page is borderline NSFW with the very skimpy ninja outfits. I would have been scrambling and praying no one saw my computer if I opened up your main page at work. (The other two banners are great and are appropriate for all ages and venues.)

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2016 at 10:56 AM

A few suggestions, and you can take the advice - or not. LOL

The banner at the top is a little huge, but I could live with it IF: 1. You take Razor's advice and go fade in/out on the parts that are now sliding. It's much less vertigo-inducing. The sliding is too abrupt for there to be so much of it on the page. And it's all competing with each other. Find a better way there.

You got a nice balance between the bright blue, light grays and whites and darker charcoal this time. Keep that.

Baby steps and you'll be there.

Laurie

I agree with the comments about scale... Some parts of the site appear to cater to visually impaired people, then others everything is a normal size and layout.

Thanks for all the comments, folks. We also recently added the "Artist of the Month."

In terms of community, we have 'featured galleries,' 'tutorials' and 'featured news.' We have 'exclusive products' for Renderosity exclusive vendors as well as 'what's hot,' which is a nice touch for the vendors! 😃 We wanted the front page to seem more like an artist page and so, we went with bigger and clearer images.

Thank you so much again! 😺

We wanted the front page to seem more like an artist page and so, we went with bigger and clearer images.

It's strange that you put it like that, as I have a fine art and design background and what your saying goes against most of the fundamentals that I was taught in those fields.

Bigger is not always better in either art or design, both are generally centralised around balance and focus. Especially when it come to presentation of art, think of white bordered mounted photographs or even the Mona Lisa, which sits like a postage stamp on a large white wall in the Louvre. Why is that do you think?

The value of white space and focalised elements that create visual harmony in gallery environments, layouts or even in an actual art piece composition are some of the basic fundamentals of art.

It's not just the physical size of the image that is the issue in the landing page layout, it's the balance and spacial relationship of the image to the rest of the pages composition and the myriad of competing components. Size can be used for striking effect or be complementary to a layout if used correctly.

Sure say "because we like it like that", but don't say because it's artistic or arty. Unfortunately if that was the intention, it has missed by a wide mark.

I like this much better, the only thing I'd change are the sliders, they are distracting. Keep them there, just no auto-sliding. I can click on the provided arrows when I ready to see what's in there. The big splash screen is pretty standard, Daz has one and it's larger, and Runtime has one, a bit smaller, but no community announcements. On Rendos I see AOM, VOM, a store ad, and a featured gallery, and then there's some articles on the side, some supporting ads for poser and V4. That's a nice balance.

Everything moves, this isn't a relaxing experience on a desktop.

I'm sure it's aimed for mobile devices where not everything can be viewed at once. It was maybe better that the images changed on refresh instead of on slideshow view.

Also I loved the tiny flash thumbnails. They promoted a lot of older products on sale.

I wonder who designes the Site for you. That HUGE Banner on the top is hitting one in the face upon entering All you see is this gigantic Banner and than it is back to scrolling again.

I am an Artist and you know , when I am at Deviantart and I click on a thumbnail and this HUGE 4000x4000 Image starts to open I am out. Big is not almost better and most certainly not on a Frontpage.

Than that huge banner blends from one Image to another.

Ths small sections also automaticly change Images.

I do not like it, I feel restless just looking at that page for 10 seconds and I am out and not even going to the Store to look around as I need a REST.

No improvement and again : WHO designes your pages?

When Rendo didn't have a store that was over 15 years ago, different owners and a different purpose. Without a store it would most likely not be here at all now. The large store ads were on the front page long before the last site re-design and there were more of them. It used to scroll a bunch of featured products - no gallery images, no featured gallery.

Then there was a box that had various news articles, occasionally a gallery feature and sales information as well as a side panel that showed featured and new products.
They basically went back to the old content, but with more gallery images & less featured products.

Sometimes I think that several members won't be happy unless all MP ads are gone and that's not realistic, at least the current incantation has a lot of stunning art work and articles linked in.

Although I do agree that Rendo has a definite problem with scaling and keeping everything balanced.

Sometimes I think that several members won't be happy unless all MP ads are gone and that's not realistic, at least the current incantation has a lot of stunning art work and articles linked in. My main problem is the lack of organization and not having a sales page or button in ONE PLACE. I ONLY care about sales. I don't care about the gallery, VOM (unless their store is on sale), 3D news, etc. (Sole exceptions being site changes and if somebody dies)

If I have to scroll down a bunch of stuff that is of no interest to me just to find a sale, then that is a deal breaker. Also, the accursed bigass banner doesn't scroll for me when I click on the arrows.

As for the ads, I block whichever ones I can, but as a rule, carousels and animated ads really bother me. Particularly powerpoint or similar ads that switch the image every few seconds. The DAZ carousel I've gotten used to, ESPECIALLY since it is not on every page (mostly just the MP home page) Rendo's carousels also really bother me because they overdo it. Every bundle is a carousel, then on the MP home, What's New, What's Hot, Most Popular, and Featured items are each their own carousel.

It also seems like whoever designs this site has no idea what he is doing-- it takes weeks of input from users to get things sorted out at all, such as removal of infinite scrolling, changing the 'on sale' text to something more readable, or adding a drop-down list to the shop by vendor page. It should not be this way, because it is SINFULLY EASY to find websites across the internet with tips or guides on website design. TONS. All you have to do is type "web design" "tips" (in parenthesis) into Google, and if you are thinking about implementing something in particular, type that into the search, such as "web design" "tips" "carousels" Yeah, some (if not half) of it will be advertising, but you will still find more hits than you can shake a stick at, from business web design sites to business news sites to Buzzfeed top 10's. So there truly is no excuse for it, and I hope one of the admins here relays this to the designer.

Raindroptheelf ( ) posted Thu, 21 January 2016 at 3:16 AM

It is that large banner and those moving images that irritates my eyes it is over the top advertising. Those people who love the work with Poser or DS will buy what they want to buy without having product adverts pushed in their face on every blooming corner.

I rather shop in stores that make me feel calm when I come in and where I can make my own choice of what I want to buy and not stopped in every aisle where people try to force products in to my shopping trolley.

Usually stores should change for the better, but with this kind of front-page is is big steps in the wrong direction.

Why is nobody is answering or aknowledging this, either show me where the current sales/daily deals page is, or GET ONE. Otherwise, I have no idea what is on sale here unless I look at the stuff a mere 20-25% off on my wishlist, and I'm not going to manually trudge through each one.

The 'Deals' page is no help either (if you find it). It is January 25th now, but the still advertise the Valentins Day sale that ended last Friday.

Maybe they'll tell us that it was weekend and nobody there to change it, but hey, then don't let it end at a time when no one is around to look at it. As it is it gives just the impression to your customers that nobody cares.

But we all know what the reply will be: 'I'll have a look into it'. Sure thing...

Just check the time and the dateIt's now 6:43 CST and so, the people running this side may just leave their beds and the days between Friday and today were no days where the staff works so, be patient. Not everybody lives in Germany and so they have different time zones.

Yeah, I'm fully aware off that. Therefore I asked why they let end a sale on Friday evening (I guess you have seen that) when they know no one is there to change anything. Why not let it run through Monday morning until someone is back at work? Does it hurt? But a customer seeing that ad when it is to late CAN hurt. And weekend is the part of the week when most people and customers, who don't live in the web, find some time to look at shops like Rendo. Seeing an old ad that no longer is valid is not helpful at all...

IceEmpress ( ) posted Sun, 31 January 2016 at 1:35 AM

Because it's a more-than-15% off-coupon with no stipulations. Of course there is going to be a ridiculous and near impossible catch. The catch being that it only lasts for 3 hours in the evening, when most people probably aren't shopping on the site.
