Subject: Rendering a character's shadow?

franklinn ( ) posted Mon, 08 October 2001 at 11:20 AM ยท edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 6:50 AM

Currently, my team and I are working on a project that requires character sprites. We would like to render the characters ground shadows along with the characters. The problem we are encountering is trying to maintain these ground shadows without also rendering a ground surface; we just want the resulting sprites and their shadows. Is there a logical way to accomplish this task either from within Poser or through a post-production application? Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. v/r Alexis

Most likely you will have to use a "White" (or 'background') color to the ground as you obviously can not render a shadow in 'space'

I don't think there is one answer here but you may find these suggestions helpful:-- If you save the rendered image as a TIF you can then use its Alpha channel as a mask.

  • If you want to render shadows in Poser you will have to put something for the shadow to fall on. Either the ground plane or maybe a flattened cylinder from the Props library.
  • If you colour the background in a shade not used in the figure, (bright green for example), it will make selecting it easier in post work.

As igohigh suggests, you do have to render a visible object for the shadow to be cast upon. You can try rendering it against an object with a saturated color so that it can be keyed out in post production (in something like AfterEffects)
