Subject: I'm Sad To Say That I'm Removing My Freebies From Renderosity

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2016 at 10:45 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 4:30 AM

This new change to the terms of service (bottom of any page > About > Terms of Service - the bit shown in the attached screenshot) doesn't really bother me, but it's the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

All my freebies are still available at ShareCG.

It'll take a while to delete them all from Renderosity because I want to upload each to a new secondary location first (currently trying DeviantArt).

Suggestions would be welcome.

A bit of commonsense from the powers that be at Renderosity would have been far more welcome though...

I personally will be sad to see your free stuff go. You have been a very good contributor.

Thanks for posting the relevant Terms portion, I had not read them.

To be honest, its probably easier to manage your freebies on one site anyway. I support making things easier! 😜 Gives us more time to work on art, products and freebies! :)

Sounds like you can still drop a post here though, when you have a new freebie at ShareCG, like "I have released a new this or that, on my account at ShareCG", that way people here still find out.

I only post freebies here that link to my products, to make it easier for customers to see from the product pages. Others that are not product related, I just post on my site, and notify everyone via forums. (of course now I will say, "You can find it at 3doutlaw dot com" haha )

Thanks UVDan, infinity10 and 3doutlaw. I've given up on the idea of transferring them to DeviantArt one by one - that was too depressing. So I've just deleted them all, and they're now only at ShareCG (except the few that I'd already copied somewhere else).

And strangely enough I now feel much happier and more positive ! :)

I think I'll actually re-upload just one item, so that there's something in my freestuff page here. I don't like the "This user has not uploaded any freestuff items" ! 😀

Wow. Rendo, if this isn't a wakeup call, I don't know what is. You have now lost Snarlygribbly, LaurieA, and 3DCheapskate.

And it's better organized as well!.. ;^) My guess is that Renderosity's low traffic is the reason, as even freebie links divert from Rendo's, though I could be wrong, as it's only a guess...

IceEmpress ( ) posted Wed, 09 March 2016 at 4:36 PM

The problem is that Rendo is tackling this entirely the wrong way-- they are not going after the two main causes of decreased traffic, which are abyssal web design and paltry sales (esp. the neutering of Prime) Bad web design is probably the main and overwhelming reason why so few non-vendor freebies are uploaded to Renderosity, anymore. TPtB don't seem to care, though, and some of the admins don't, either (UVDan probably does, and possibly LPR to a certain degree based on one of his posts)

I am not sure whether or not web design or prime neutering has hurt traffic more-- though I would wager a guess that it is the former.

And admins (to run by TPtB) problem is more than just BAD web design-- it is also the frequency of radical redesigns. I see plenty of people post who are still unaware of for instance, the ability to click "all vendors" then use the drop-down list instead of loading every individual avatar.
I see people who still don't know that you can type a vendor name into the Wishlist search and narrow all products to that vendor. It does not help that the programmers (or is it just one programmer?) are understaffed, underskilled, and overworked, and only return feature functionality or install new features gradually over a period of 6 months. Understand that some of your customers are not tech savvy, do not adapt easily to new designs/workflows, or simply do not have the time to play around with the site and see what they can and cannot do. People are accustomed to certain site features.
It does not help that Rendo puts so many huge banners everywhere. The more clutter you have on the webpage, the harder it is to find important site features such as the "deals" link, search bars, or drop-down menus.

(Also, uh, Hope, maybe you could paste this sentence below to TPtB directly-- a paraphrasing runs the risk of losing the message) I've said this countless times, TPtB, but it is painfully clear, based on many of the major decisions that you have made within the past year, that you are not looking at what the competition is doing-- this is one of the most basic rules for a successful business.
I will bring up the relevant issue of site redesign. None of your competitors overhaul the site design every year. Customers find site redesigns to be confusing, and all adapt to it at different rates. To this day there are forumites who are unable to navigate the site or find some of its features.

takezo3001: ShareCG has always been my first choice - I uploaded my first freebie there six years ago before I knew that Renderosity had a FreeStuff section. They're not perfect, but up till now they've been the best in my opinion (and hopefully will continue to be). And that's even taking into account Dave's open letter a few years back about becoming a subscription site - I remember that they actually listened to what the users were saying...

IceEmpress: I think that your 'TPtB' should be a hyperlink to a YouTube video, but of course that's against terms Of Service. So here's a couple of appropriate Youtube searches:

  • Axel Foley: I am not listening to you! ... watch?v=S_RYIylWEp4

  • Erik the Viking - Hy Brasil Sinking ... watch?v=qJh6EQ5gv7g

*Nowadays I always find myself typing Renderatrocity and then correcting it... except for that one just there of course... LOL

It really makes me wonder what in the world is going on here anymore....

There used to be hundreds of freebies that were linked to off site servers here. I used to have more than a few here that were hosted on my server space. And if it is free what does it really matter where it is? Rendo does not pay for my server space... Oh, I know, they want that pop up window that show things you can buy here while you wait for your download to start. They want it on their server, so they can control it. That is the bottom line, exclusive freebies.... Free now has a catch, what a concept.........

With everything they do here to make things better, all they are doing is driving people away.... At the rate things are going, this will be the next site to go the way of the dodo.....

Some things are easy to explain, other things are not........ <- Store ->   <-Freebies->

quietrob ( ) posted Wed, 06 April 2016 at 10:29 PM

I'm a bit surprised.

Renderosity, why? Other sites don't care if they link to you. They give a warning about links then it's up to the user.

This is a rule. Not a law. If it upsets so many, why not change it back? As far as I know, there are only adults on the site. I understand the changes to make more cash. That's the American way. It's also the American way to change our minds. The creators above and elsewhere have contributed time, effort and talent. Please reward them by accepting their links.

Still shaking your heads? How about a suggestion. Vetting the links. If you need a volunteer to do so I will step up.

and now RDNA has been absorbed by the DAZ sponge.....
