Subject: The 'Be All And End All' Method for Using DSON

Glen ( ) posted Thu, 12 May 2016 at 9:08 AM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 9:50 AM

Hi folks,

I have a few items which use DSON, however, I have never been able to get them to work in Poser Pro 2014. I've trawled the web, tried all kinds of workarounds and all sorts, but am consistently facing problems. I do not believe these are problems with the products, but most likely a problem with Poser and DSON.

So, could someone please post a step-by-step, from the initial download of DSON (with a link to the download, so I can be certain it is the exact same), through installation directories and the installation, importing and use of a product needing DSON in PP2014?

I am not looking for links to other tutorials or posts, as I've likely tried these methods already without success. I am looking for someone who knows their stuff to post a step-by-step idiot's guide, with links, even pictures, if necessary, please, and someone who can help me with any problems which may arise.

My feeling is that if I can get one product working, they will all work, though that is just a feeling, so may not be the case.

Please refrain from posting anything but a real, hard-core, committed guide, as multiple posts with multiple replies to other posts intertwined with other posts just makes everything incredibly confusing. I'm looking for one (hopefully) fix-all post, or as near as possible, not "Try this..." then "Ok, try that..." then "Right, try this then that then what I said in post one..." then "Ok, try what I just said but reverse what I said in post one...", I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Just to note: I don't use any patches, as these caused problems, then the patch-patches caused problems again... it's always the same; I use all my software as-is, out of the box, same goes for operating systems and everything (with the exception of antivirus software or software which forces upgrades), it's just better that way. If that means I can't use DSON, so be it, but I'll be miffed.

Ok, right, let's see how we get on, thank you very much! :)

If you can't get patches to work properly, I'd give up on DSON, because there's something wrong with your computer ken, and to use DAZ content in Poser takes a bit of fiddling often enough. Personally, I find everything comes in pretty well using Poser Pro 2014 except clothing and I've given up on that.

Nothing wrong with my computer, it has happened with many different pieces of software on multiple machines spanning decades. It's a preference of mine and that's that. I want to avoid chatter and get straight to the point, as I said. I should also mention that I am not the only one who has experienced problems with service releases for Poser in particular, far from it! I started a post about it a while back and numerous others supported my claims that the patch may well fix some problems, but caused others, as all patches for all software do at some point or other. I'm not playing games with software, it either works or it doesn't and, if it doesn't, it's rubbish software. I believe Poser works perfectly well enough. Now, on with the show!

I've tried YET AGAIN, following all of the instructions, yet I STILL face problems.

I have PP2014 64-BIT

I have downloaded and installed DSON 64-BIT as per the instructions

I have downloaded Genesis 3 Female Starter Essentials and installed to a brand spanking new runtime on my external drive, but cannot follow the instructions to install, as it's in zip format, not exe.

Here are said instructions: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dson_importer/poser/userguide/dson_installation_requirements/tutorials/dson_installation/start

To top it all off, I get this error when starting Poser, which is odd, as I'm not running anything at 32-bit.

An errror occurred importing addon dson : ERROR: DLL load failed: %1 is not a valid Win32 application.

Genesis 3 is not officially compatible with Poser, so you will see nothing in the Library if it is installed into a Poser runtime. Poser compatible DSON items have a DSON core .zip and a Poser CF .zip; both must be installed to the same Poser Library folder. EDIT DSON items without Poser CF 's may be able to be loaded using D3D's free DSON loader script...

http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=poserpython&product=dson_loader

DAZ content is packaged for the Studio Library. To install DAZ content (Genesis, V3 or whatever)from .zip files, either browse the .zip file and drag out the contents of the .zip's Content folder and drop them into a folder mapped to the Poser library. If one has several to install, unzip them to a temporary folder and drag out the contents of the Content folder as noted above. I use DAZ Install Manager to install DAZ content, and it works seamlessly. However, it does install DAZ's Content Manager Service, but it can be uninstalled...

Make sure you have the latest PP2014 SR installed, SR 5.2, Version: 10.0.5.28925.

As far as the Importer goes, if you ave the latrest Poser SR, try uninstalling the Importer, then manually delete the Runtime/Python/addons/dson folder from your PP2014 folder before reinstalling.

I use the last Public beta, because the current version causes geometry issues with Genesis 2 and 3. If you are lucky, it's in your account and can be gotten here if you are signed into DAZ:

Thank you. I can see some things in my runtime, they just give me errors on loading, even though the items appear in the menu, they don't appear in the scene.

Do all the Genesis/Genesis 2 items have Poser Companion Files? Are the Poser Companion Files installed to a runtime (be it your main Poser runtime or an external Poser runtime)? Can this runtime be written to (meaning it is outside the protected Programs folder)? Is the Poser library pointing at the runtime the Poser companion files are isntalled to as well as the content folder the .duf files are installed to?

Also make certain you do not have duplicate copies of the .duf or other DAZ files.

Is the DSON importer installed to the Python folder in the main Poser runtime? While it may no longer be absolutely necessary to install all Python scripts to the main Poser runtime, I have found that Poser prefers Python scripts to be installed there.

Glen ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2016 at 5:46 PM

What do Poser companion files look like and where are they to be found? I downloaded the Genesis 3 Female Starter Essentials and it comes as a zip file. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in poser companion files.

There are no Poser Companion files included with Genesis 3, because it's not compatible with Poser as sold. There are Companion files for Genesis 1 and 2; the .zips end with 'Poser CF'. They need to be installed to the same folder as the main .zip file....

First and foremost, Genesis 3 is not DSON compatible, ready or whatever you want to call it. DSON is only for Genesis and Genesis 2 bases figures and the morph sets. Genesis and Genesis 2 use standard UV mapping and the DAZ proprietary Triax WM rigging in DS. It is converted to Poser's WM rigging (P9 and up) via the DSON importer. Genesis 3 uses a completely different rigging and UV mapping. It has dual quaternion rigging and UDIM mapping. Neither of which is supported by Poser.

If a product for Genesis and Genesis 2 have Poser Companion Files, they will be part of the download. You can create your own Poser Companion Files but you must have DS installed to create them. Without Poser companion files, the duf (or older DS files) that you import into Poser will not work. If you simply want to load props, Dimension 3D has a free DSON loader script on his site. You must have it and the DSON installed. The loader script will load most props into Poser. If it is a large prop, it may take a while and sometimes it fails. Also be aware that you will have to adjust the material settings. Poser and DS have different render engines so the material settings are much different.

quietrob ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2016 at 8:46 PM

By now you know that unless you have Poser 11, you're not getting Genesis 3 to work properly in Poser. PP2014 = No Genesis 3. PP2014= Yes Genesis 1 and 2.

Let's do it step by step. I know it's basic but I'm a basic kinda person who has ZERO problems with the DSON importer.

Do you have DAZ Studio installed in your computer?

If you do where is it installed?

Do you have the DSON importer installed?

Where is the DSON importer installed?

Exactly what product from DAZ are you trying to install in Poser using the DSON importer?

Where is that product installed?

Thanks folks, my mistake. All the instructions say is 'Genesis Starter Essentials' and I don't have that in my product library, just Genesis 2 and 3.

Right, so I have downloaded Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials PoserCF from my library and it's sitting here as a zip file and waiting. Inside, I can see a Content folder, Manifest.dsx and Supplement.dsx. Am I to leave these and navigate to the Runtime folder inside the Content folder, then copy that in one movement to the runtime I created specifically for DSON files?

quietrob: I've followed the instructions which I posted above, so it's all installed to where the instructions told me. http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dson_importer/poser/userguide/dson_installation_requirements/tutorials/dson_installation/start

The product was Genesis 3 Female Starter Essentials, but I am now going to try it with Genesis 2. I have other products as well which I have tried to install, but I figured I'd try getting Genesis to work then apply everything I did to get that working, to the other products and see if they work.

Thanks,

Glen.

[icprncss2]Dimension 3D has a free DSON loader script on his site.

Do you have a link for this script please? I checked his/her free stuff, store, and the store on Content Paradise but didn't see the script. Thanks a bunch.

icprncss2 ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2016 at 1:07 PM

The site is:

d3d.sessler.de

I don't think I can provide the link because he has free items that may be considered competition to Rendo's free stuff.

When you get to the site, look under software>Poser Python Scripts. It's the DSON loader. There are many more scripts there you will find helpful.

This is not a link to a site with competing content. It is a link to a site with links to other sites, which as far as I can tell is not against the TOS.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Others have had links removed from posts to other sites with freebies. I give up trying to figure out what is and isn't for or against the TOS. It's just simpler to put the addy down as text and let anyone who want's copy/paste and go.

Makes no difference, they remove links that aren't hyperlinked and type 'search goggle for so and so', it's really annoying when all you're trying to do is be part of a community and help others who are learning. it's easier not to bother trying to be helpful

It does make a difference. Dimension 3D is fine as a live link. They are an affiliate. We don't just go around willy nilly removing all links. I know that no one really likes this rule, but it's here to stay. No point derailing this thread.

Have a creative day!

Interesting; it used to automatically come with the DSON Importer. It's on the Freebies page at DAZ, along with the Stephanie 5 Starter Bundle, which you should grab ASAP! Type www dot DAZ3d dot com slash freebies and you will find them...
