Hi Again 😄

I am wanting to create a "new" Renderosity Chat and bring some new things to the table.

What I would like to know is if you would benefit from and or be interested in attending classes, live tutorials, meet and greet Vendors where you will be able to learn some tricks of the trade, find out how they got started, ask them questions, etc. in chat?

Maybe you have some other things you would like to see? Whether it be ideas for chat or features you would like to see within chat, I would like to know.

Please respond here in the forum and let me know. Also, please know that not all will be able to be done right now however that does not mean it is off the table or I am not listening.

I am always here and always listening, all good things do take time though.

Thank you,

Kristi

Just close chat down. The regulars have left and no longer trust the site over the way the chat has been mishandled over the last couple of years (the troll, being the last bit to be "fixed" in the revamp, etc) . Sad but that's the truth. It's been stated that they are happier in their own chat now.

That may be true for a particular group. But this is a new idea and I think it's worth a try at least.

@infinity10 I am the same I don't think the timezones will help in every instance but Rendo is made up with members from all over so I am sure that everybody will be able to contribute and be part of a tutorial on offer.

@Khai I hear you my friend I was there and saw it all unfold I can't argue with your statement other than as Boni pointed out this is something different and worth considering. One thing you can be sure of is a revamped chat will be nothing like the previous version.

Thing is.. And I'm gonna be the negative one again... But this was what we were told chat was going to be for before. 2 rooms, one general, one for teaching and interviews. The rooms happened. The rest... About 3 times then nothing more. The teaching room was dropped quietly during a refit (one before the one before last I think) and general chat remained.

KristiS ( ) posted Tue, 07 June 2016 at 12:45 PM

Khai - I had nothing to do with that and as a matter of fact, I was not even aware of the idea/promises/etc.

All I know is we have new members who may benefit from things that we hope to put in place as well as some members we have currently.

To be honest my dear, if you wouldn't attend that is fine however I refuse to give up and hope to make chat a place where members can talk, interact, learn, and have fun with each other again.

I hope to move forward and I would like to leave the past where it belongs. There were things that took place that people (including myself) weren't too fond of however there is nothing that can be done about that now. We can only look forward and do the best we can do.

i'm not sure where i come down yet on this idea...

however, should you end up going down this path in terms of live 'classes' and 'tutorials', always keep in mind to have, and to keep, a good balance in terms of the various programs folks use, the various galleries on the site [not just 3D] and which vendors create for which, as by not doing so could lead to disaster, if you see what i mean [think software wars, etc. and malcontent... yawn]

just my immediate knee-jerk response., esp. with regard to all the posts ive seen recently about the MP not having enough Poser-related releases vs. the plethora of DS items, blahblah...

i do applaud the brainstorming you're doing and the invite to participate in helping to round out various ideas you've had these past couple of weeks... your efforts are not going unnoticed

Chat was far more busy then the forum, until recently with the downtime inferno multiple times, when we all suffered from withdrawal symptoms!

There was crying and asking in the forum, but it took so long each time before chat was up and running again.

On top of that came the ID thief troll, who copied avatars and names.

And pretended to be a regular chatter and freaked people so out, that an other solution had to be found soon.

The new 30 day member requirement was an excellent idea, but it came to late...

If Rendo really is serious about revamping chat, there are some very important things that are required to make it successful.

  • Delete the chat logs and chat uploads every single day....

because it lags chat, it makes chat unstable if it isn't done every single day.

Chatters who are idle in chat for days, make the chat very unstable, kick and prune to make it stable.

Also for privacy reasons!

  • If the chat members report misbehaviour, act on it at once, don't see how it goes, thinking maybe it will get better. Because it's like an untreated wound. It's such a moodspoiler and then people leave...

  • Vendors in chat, there were vendors in chat, they help just like non-vendors always help.

But if people log in chat only to get and never to give and they build a reputation of asking, asking, wanting, asking and then leave when they get where they came for.

It leaves a bitter feeling behind and chatters aren't inclined to help once someone has that gimme-reputation.

So then maybe it is a good idea to compensate the helpers with gift-certificates if they are like 2 hours in chat to help others.

Also if you want a different result, you need to make changes, and Rendo made a lot of changes and they given different results...but not all the results for the better.

Everything is slow the forum, the chat etc etc.

Listen to the members, act on it, give the members what they ask, please....?

Because aren't the members the top priority at Rendo?

Without members...what is left?

I want Rendo to shine, to do well!

I have to agree with Biscuits and Khai. Chat was my online home. I use to spend most of my day in there. On my good days I loved helping others and getting help for things I did not know. I discovered new programs and helped others discover new programs. I loved the enviroment and the people. I loved it when newbies came in for help and seeing them over time improve. We had our silly moments when we talked about food, cats and what ever. Popular venders would always pop in and it was great talking to them and get to know them.

To me Kristi, your plan sounds like what we had but on a schedule.

If you can fix it up and make it work that is awesome. But please fix it well so we can forget being violated by the trolls that came in.

KristiS ( ) posted Wed, 08 June 2016 at 3:27 PM

Thank you for your input Biscuits as it is very much appreciated.

I am in discussion with the programmer and we are discussing what is available to us and go from there.

I was unaware of the plans for it before as I just know I want to make it better.

I will keep everyone posted and if you all want to site mail me with any features you would like....feel free 😄

Members are our #1 priority and I will do whatever I can, sometimes though, the system is not set up to do certain things and we are not able to give everyone everything they want however we will certainly do the best we can.

Nothing should ever be left as a "we will wait and see" when members are concerned about something.

I like the idea of some classes or a meet and greet. Chat should be a welcoming place for both old and new members. It could be really fun at times and serious at others before the troll stuff happened. There were some talented people who were happy to help newbies who stopped by.

I think it's always been appreciated when admins or moderators come in to say hi.

@Giana The classes, tutorials and vendor concepts are not all rolled into one. There are plenty of competent members(Non vendors) here that might like to share their knowledge. It should be open to all applications including 2D/3D/hand drawn. I guess the platforms/methods covered would grow on the participation, if there is a good turnout on a particular software or subject it would encourage others to provide more tutorial content. Although some sort of tutorial wish list wouldn't go astray so those with the knowledge can gain some insight into what the members would like to see covered in the future.

@fivecat chat is a lot of fun for sure, I am very keen to see it get sorted out and properly utilized

@BionicRooster Limited knowledge LOL I am sure you would provide great lessons.

for anyone wondering on the benefits of live teaching sessions, people can ask questions on the fly, as they think of them. When watching a YouTube tutorial video, you have to wait until the end, and the person may not even cover the question you were thinking of, making you go on another search and have to watch another video.

i wouldn't think that they were all rolled into one, nor was i even in want of limiting anything. i was speaking more to the formalities that may be set up, if any, such as site announcements to catch people's attention who have never been to chat at all, and how to attract that initial interest [hope what i'm saying is making at least a little sense as i'm quite scattered and distracted with the day to day dross of life atm].

and as i said in my original post, things should not be geared just towards 3D. for example, and this is just one of a myriad i could give, a photographer who can explain ways that they set up lighting in a studio has insight that can translate to any visual art/image, as lighting is, in my mind, the top key element that makes or breaks an image... all artists on this site have something of value to contribute, even those just starting out, because everyone has their own perspectives and/or ways of doing things and thinking/approaching a project/image. there is so much potential benefit in just the simple sharing of things - period... i'm a BIG believer in the adage of skinning cats and the infinite number of ways in doing so...

A good chat room is like a good pub. When you walk in and there are 3 people asleep at the bar and the place is pretty much empty it doesn't really make you want to stay for an ale. My solution for the pub would be a Tuesday $7 steak night and Thursday ladies nights with 1/2 price drinks....

Open forum learning is great for base level tuts, but is unfortunately restricted by the lowest common denominator in the room which can frustrate more advanced participants. In attempting to drive traffic to the Rendo chat platform you appear to be going against the mass market entities such as Facebook and other direct chat access platforms, so you may have a tough job shifting traffic through these day. But best of luck I hope it works out for the best. Let me know when happy hour is and I will try to drop by :)

LPR001 ( ) posted Fri, 10 June 2016 at 7:20 AM

@Giana I think we are on the same page with this and I agree with everything you have said maybe I could have worded my response better. If Kristi is given the indication that the members would like to see the classes/meet and greets etc take place, the logistics to ensure all members are given plenty of notice and the accessibility to attend the events will follow. As infinity10 has mentioned even the differing time zones would be an issue and there will no doubt be quite a few other measures to be taken into consideration to ensure everyone that wants to has the opportunity to participate.

Conceptually, the idea seems very feasible and beneficial to everyone willing to take the time to contribute and participate. But, I do have concerns about live chats, tutorials and meet & greets. As mentioned, time zones, a tremendous factor which, potentially, could exclude many artists and users. That needs major consideration, thoughtful planning, and proper coordination to make it successful. Another factor is timing, scheduling events to coincide with optimal participation. I am sure most participants are employed either day- or night-time with limited access to computers or mobile devices. Or busy real-life events which could also impact on Web participation. How will they be accommodated and included in these events? And may I point out, how will these events be announced and broadcast? Will there be mass emailings? Will there be a special forum prominently pinned somewhere to attract members? There is quite a bit to things to consider to make this a successful venture, and I'll be awaiting closely.

KristiS ( ) posted Fri, 10 June 2016 at 2:35 PM

Yes, different time zones, people's schedules, etc will be taken into consideration and there will be arrangements to try and ensure as many people as possible will not miss out.

We will be carefully planning behind the scenes if enough people are interested.

I do like the idea of a special forum for members to come to and find out the dates and times of different events going on in chat...I think that would be great so thank you so much for the suggestion hborre 😄

Never let the negatives stop you from doing something positive. What's more positive than classes and learning? Interacting with the vendors and mentors would help everyone as well. I'm all in.

Also with proper editing, any class could be offered as a tutorial later. That would draw more people to the site and that would be a good thing!

I think that as long as it doesn't turn into a "OMG you still use POSER?" thing and it's from vendors that work in Poser as well and still make things for Poser great. But not if it's going to turn into another "DS OMG it's the best since sliced bread and if you don't use G3 you are sooooo behind"

I mean I just looked at the new Fantasy sale and only ONE vendor made something for Poser ONE. That is the one thing I will pick up, the rest, I have no use for.

With the plethora of software that all the chat people used, there wasn't any one program that was "put down". Complained about, maybe (Blender), but never dissed. And for the time zones and people not being able to make certain live tutorials, we should have them recorded, chat room and all, and archived, so people can watch them.

@quietrob If I were to do a couple of tutorials they would be PDF/MP4 and or content based so after the event they could still stand on their own as a viable tutorial for those who could not make it. Your "Also with proper editing, any class could be offered as a tutorial later." just hit the mark and it could be considered that if during the tutorial those attending the chat version ask a great question or even point out an additional method to carry out a function/process then this could be added to the download package as a FAQ sheet. This kind of helps with the timezone issue as well as BR has pointed out.

Maybe we should beta test this soon

OK i'll put my 2cents in here in another light

1st Question - you plan to put on live chats with vendors but the chat itself needs several other issues fixed before that can happen.

2nd Question - mic or no mic ?

3rd Question - chatrooms max number currently is what ?

4th Question - has their been thought to the differing internet styles that people use - ie. dial up to fibre to dsl

5th Question - if using typewritten word - thoughts have been had on the speed a chatroom can move at and those not as literate as others ?

Being there it's possible but I have many basic thoughts on this not just going on what the chat room was but also as an experienced Chat Administrator on the many possiblilities of what can go wrong.

These tutorials may have to have limited numbers

Piper

KristiS ( ) posted Thu, 07 July 2016 at 4:30 PM

Hi Piper,

Here are the answers to your questions as I will try to answer them to the best of my ability however, please keep in mind that chat will be different than before and we have not dug into any of it yet as I was just putting some feelers out first to gather some information:

1st Question - you plan to put on live chats with vendors but the chat itself needs several other issues fixed before that can happen.

I was trying to see if anyone had interest in this first as there would be no point to implement something if nobody was interested in it and yes, issues will be fixed before any additions are made and or features added.

2nd Question - mic or no mic ?

I think both would be necessary as not everyone has a mic and we would like everyone who is interested be able to participate.

3rd Question - chatrooms max number currently is what ?

I'll be honest, I do not know the answer to this question at the moment as I know there use to be quite a bit of people in there at one time

4th Question - has their been thought to the differing internet styles that people use - ie. dial up to fibre to dsl

Yes, I have thought about that and this is why it is taking quite a bit of time and planning as I have NO intentions on just throwing something back out there just because. It needs to be done right

5th Question - if using typewritten word - thoughts have been had on the speed a chatroom can move at and those not as literate as others ?

Yes, I hope to have logs available to everyone so if someone can't join at a particular time or can't read and or type as fast, they are not missing out.

Being there it's possible but I have many basic thoughts on this not just going on what the chat room was but also as an experienced Chat Administrator on the many possibilities of what can go wrong.

These tutorials may have to have limited numbers

You can gladly send me a site mail my Dear and I will take everything into consideration. I hope to have different time slots available so multiple people can participate.

Hugs,

Don't need to Kristi lol, just wanted to see how far you'd thought plus I could've answered most of them myself

What you would need is new site software for chat after so many it lags like heck..

Anything is possible - do some test run "meet n greets" first before changing software. Dont write it off because of lack of interest not everyone reads the forums ;)

Just an opinion on the mic or no mic question. I know from experience that voicechat in a small group of maybe four-five people is not a problem at all, but once you get more people than that, the loudmouths will take over, and the more quiet people never get a word in. Maybe some function to automatically mute everyone once you reach a certain number of participants? From then on you will have to type everything. There is of course nothing stopping people from using type only if they so wish! If you allow a large group of people to have voicechat you need some sort of moderation and ques system so everyone can get their questions/comments in.

The way I would prefer it, would be that the mic would only be available to whomever is doing the teaching session. It wouldn't be an open mic room, where all users could speak, only who is broadcasting. The "students" would be limited to typing. This would help with any class clown issues, along with keeping bandwidth usage to reasonable levels.
