Subject: Using Das Studio 4.8 to port Characters from V4 to G3

Hi, I am a fairly recent convert to Daz Studio, but have dabbled with Poser for several years. Anyway, I have a number of Custom Characters saved into my poser runtime, based on V4. I have noticed a problem in that, if, using DS, I change some aspect of the character, like a texture, or a slight morph, etc... its a problem trying to save it into my old runtimes via Daz Studio. So - to the actual questions: 1) do I need to start 'remaking' my characters, using G3 models, which I have installed in DS, but haven't really used (I just find that I am quicker using my old Poser Runtimes through DS, so haven't really bothered trying to figure out how to use the DS content tab).

  1. Is there a way to export/copy the morphs/shapes of my legacy (V4) based figures onto G3 figures? Thanks for your advice and help in advance.

I 'evolved' over time (not unlike our species) from Poser to Daz and took all my items, scenes and characters with me. Daz will open Poser formatted stuff and you can save it in Daz's format. Characters will look a bit different and of course, you'll need to fiddle with materials. I still use the traditional library setup since, like you, If found that Daz's smart content isn't. My Poser runtimes have been carefully managed over many years of use and I find that I can find stuff quickly in them.

exactly, but what I am after is a way of transposing my character's faces from V4 to G3, to make them a bit more 'future proof'.

Look at the Genesis Generation X2 converters from Dimension3D. They are to move morphs from older characters to newer characters. I don't use them, but people seemt o like them

If you want to recreate them onto Genesis, what 3doutlaw said is really the only way to do that. But there's no reason you can't keep using them the way they are. There are a ton of people who still stick with Generation 4 figures.

I don't often work with Gen4, so I can't tell you, off the top of my head, what is the best to save them out again after changing. But I would recommend ditching the old Runtime structure as you can sort and classify however you want in Studio (without ever touching Smart Content, if you don't want to).

Using Generation X2 gets you to Genesis 2 without a problem, he has come out with a Genesis 3 version, I've bought it, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. But that only updates the morphs, you have to use something else to update the skins assuming you want to port those too. Again, going from V4 to Genesis2 Female works well, getting that skin to Genesis 3 is something else again.

You would need the Legacy UVs for Genesis 3 to port over any V4 textures you have available. Fortunately, that script can be found here in the Rendo marketplace: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/legacy-uvs-for-genesis-3-v4/113767/.

Thanks guys, I will go check out both the Legacy UVs for G3 and D3D's converters. I take it by the skin, you mean the textures? I am not too attached to those, I am sure there are plenty of G3 skins that are great.
