Hmmm.... unless things are very different in your neck of the woods., 40% abv doesn't equate to 80 proof. Then again, the US pint is considerably smaller than the UK version so maybe it does.

Actually, 40% abv IS 80 proof in the U.S.
According to Wikipedia: "Alcohol proof in the United States is defined as twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Consequently, 100-proof whiskey contains 50% alcohol by volume; 86-proof whiskey contains 43% alcohol. ... For example, 50% ABV would be described as "100 proof" rather than "100 degrees proof"."
I know it's confusing. The US always gotta be different. LOL

We dropped the Proof scale years ago but 40% abv equates to 70 proof for us. Most distilled alcohol here is 40% abv but a few sneaky manufacturers sell 37.5, or 35. The law stipulates a minumum strength a particular type can be sold at, usually 37.5.
The old saw about drinking Scotch with water comes from times when cask strength was more readily available. Most people prefer it to be somewhat dilute but regular, over the counter Scotch should be taken neat. Oh, and we also have you guys to thank for chill filtering. It seems some American guy didn't like the fact his Scotch went cloudy when he added ice. Distillers were pretty much forced into filtering the stuff to remove a lot of the oils, esters, and whatnot so it no longer went cloudy when water or ice was added. Sadly, the process also removes a lot of the character.
Fortunately, non-chill filtered Scotch is making a comeback. Having recently given up on not drinking alcohol (I managed to quit several of my pain meds), I am pleased to note my stock of the stuff tastes as good as ever. :D

I didn't know that scotch did the cloudy thing. I know there are some types of alcohol that do it, like absinthe and the sambuca-like anise liquers, but I didn't know that scotch did it :D
I can't drink anymore because of bp meds, but never was much of a drinker to begin with. I can't say what I think whiskey and scotch tastes like to me without making more enemies, so we'll leave it at that. LMAO I was the perfect bartender (used to be one in another life)...never had an urge to sample the "merchandise" ;).

Most whiskey doesn't go cloudy now, thanks(?) to the filtering. Unfiltered tastes richer, smoother and has a slight viscosity. And at cask strength, it'll put hairs on yer chest. Whether or not you want it to. :) That's why we Celts are so damn hairy. Well, apart from me but I guess that's probably from other parts of my ancestry. Far as I know, I don't have any Asian, Native American or Indigenous Australian but that's about it. :D
Whiskey - or whisky - is an acquired taste. I'll be anything you care to name most people wouldn't take to Laphroaig first time around.
Since quitting the pain meds, I drink very moderately; having two small children means I have to be on hand if necessary and I don't believe in setting a bad example, or letting them see me the worse for wear. My dad was never a big drinker as I was growing up. Even later, I never once saw him drunk. No bad thing.
