Subject: Where Poser Pro 2012 should be installed in Windows 7

Cyberdene ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2016 at 10:09 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 12:34 AM

I just bought a new computer, so before I make the mistake of installing Poser Pro 2012 again into the Program folders. I wanted to know where exactly do I install the program? See I've noticed that some of my issues with Poser and certain things not working or issues like Michael 4's morphs not showing is probably because of the program is installed in the Programs folder, but then Victoria 4 Main morphs work (Shefreak, Muscle, +++. Elite, etc). Anyway where should I install the program correctly? And does it matter that I install the content I purchase into that same folder or just place the content anywhere? I know this question has been asked a lot before from other users. But I just wanted to make sure so that I don't have to waste memory constantly trying to get Poser Pro 2012 to work. Also should i install the SR3 or no? From what I've heard some people say that these don't exactly improve Poser at all, but causes it to have more problems. I can never really tell, I mean when I was using Poser 7 I had very few issues with it compared to Pro 2012, and I never upgraded anything with Poser 7 like SR files or whatever. I just know I've heard people say that it's a bad idea to install them. IF anyone has any advice on that, could be helpful.

Thank you.

Poser Pro 2012 would install to program files; the content should be installed to the default location in public documents.

There will still be a modest runtime in the Poser Pro 2012 folder, but it just has things needed by Poser itself. Do not put your own stuff in that program files runtime. It wasn't having Poser in program files which caused your problems; it was your attempt to install content to the program files runtime (which was blocked by User Account Control) which caused the problem.

Your homebuilt and purchased content should go to either the downloads\runtime within public documents, or to a runtime on a secondary hard drive.
Install the morphs++ and elite packs to the same downloads\runtime in which you install the target dolls.

Install the SR updates; SR 3.1 fixed several bugs and added some nice features. I can't recall offhand if that was the last update. I have Poser Pro 2012 (with all SR updates) on a 64bit Win7Ultimate machine, Program goes in program files, content into public documents. Just let the installers choose their own default locations and you'll be alright.

You can install Poser any where you want. If you have space on the C drive just make a folder there outside of Programs and have at it. Once you install Poser outside of programs then you can install all the content to the Main Runtime inside of the Poser Program folder just like it was a version 6 or 7, before the UAC in Vista. I have the SR3 installed on my PP2012 and don't seem to have any issues. If you do setup the program outside of Programs make sure to look at each install option and select the ones that will make Poser think it is an older version.

I also install ALL my apps, both 2D and 3D in directories I created at the C: root for just this purpose. This way I keep all my software apps, whick give me the option to install where I want, outside of Program Files on my Win7 Pro laptop.

IOW, I created a directory for 2D Applications, and another directory for 3D Applications. That's where I install all my software so I don't have to deal with the UAC.

If the program allows for it (some don't like Adobe, ZBrush ...) I find it best to install on an external drive. ... App and content. That way it doesn't lug down the cpu when I start getting gigs and gigs of content. Poser allows for this and that is good. My approach only, use it as you wish.

I never even thought about that..I usually add all the content to the computer instead.

All my art and content is on an external drive ... so IF something happens to my machine. My creations are safe ... hopefully.

Boni, it isn't always possible to recover data from a dead drive. I'd recommend you get a second external HD and periodically duplicate your runtime, content zips, project folders, etc.

Regarding installation of Poser outside of program files: I have a folder for XP-era programs which write to their own libraries (P5, P7, e.g.), so that those programs can have write privileges, but anything Vista-era and later goes into program files. That way, User Account Control gives them some protection from malware overwrite/worm attacks.

Ah, yes, I actually have a master back-up drive. I should have mentioned that. Almost 20 years ago I was as techie as you guys are now. But life and my vision sort of left me in the dust after I moved away from San Jose.

I use to worry about losing all my things too, that's why it would be much better if you could save everything to a CD disc. I have CD discs from 1996 that still work like new today. But anything electronic? No. After awhile machines will die and stop working. But CDs will last forever so long as you keep them in their CD cases. I don't know anyone who has a Nintendo from the 1980s that still runs like new today. It's highly unlikely that it does. Same goes for anything else electronic related.

When you say C drive your talking about the OS (C)?

Yeah about that, how do I make it think it's an older version? I can't even remember what all install options it asks. I am about to try to install right now though since my new rig just came in the mail today.

Make virtual partitions on your harddrive. Search you tube tutorials how to create new volumes on your hdd. Then organize your computer. E.g. I did C:-drive for my OS and have F-drive for all my graphic programs. The only downside is that some programs won't respect your organizing pattern and will put their content crap still in your C. drive without asking for permission.

@ Cyberdene When I said C drive it was because most people only have a single drive on their machine which is C: If you have more then one drive you can put poser where ever you want as long as it is not in an OS protected area (such as Programs). I have a computer whit 4 hard drives and have put Poser on the E: drive. As far as the install options it has been awhile, but the first option is to install Poser to the C:Program fileSmithMicroPoser something folder. At this point choose another location either E:Poser or C:Poser or where ever you wish it to be. Shortly after the question as to where to put the program will be a question as to where ton put the content. The default will be to C:UserPublicsomething. One of the options is with the program as in the old style. Do not remember what the exact message is but it has the warning NOT RECOMMENDED. And if you placed the program in C:Programs that is true since the UAC will kick in. However if you installed outside of C:Programs thenyou will be OK.
