Kind of a quiet day today, grey clouds, cool, windy....I love those days, usually get lots of work done. Glad you like it. I am going to put a little one sitting in it, in the log cabin doing work. My dad bought me one like that and put it in my room so I could do homework, he he he, I use to play it was a cave in the desk with my dolls, homework, what's homework....he he he...I am sure my dear father new. I miss him today. He passed away about 20 years ago, when I was a young lady. When I do models like this I often think of him... Boy did I go on and on....sorry...Sharen

No, Sharen, do not say you are sorry. I think a lot of us, especially in the frightening days we are living through right now, think with great nostalgia back to the times when we were safe at home with our parents. I know that not a day goes by when I do not think of my own father, who is the light of the world to me. Lately I have set apart a few minutes every day just to consciously try to remember my childhood, and all of the people who were important to me then. Memories are a good part of what an artist draws on, don't you think? And lest I forget, thank you so very much for this, and all of the other beautiful things you have so generously given to this community. I want to buy the log cabin, and I can hardly wait to see the furniture you are making to go in it! Kimberly

This is very, very cute. Thank you.

dancineyes ( ) posted Sun, 14 October 2001 at 6:55 PM

Yes, Sharon don't ever worry about going on and on...especially about wonderful memories such as those. I had a desk like that too except my Papa (Grandfather) gave it to me. He past when I was a child too, so I can relate to those sweet memories. Don't know that I got much homework done there either... :)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Sun, 14 October 2001 at 7:06 PM

LOL...I know, weren't those desks great though....I loved mine. Sharen

jamball77 ( ) posted Sun, 14 October 2001 at 7:14 PM

Yeah, we grew up in the golden years. Well... except for the nuclear bomb drills. :) I'm not quite that old but they did happen. Thanks a lot Sharon for your generosity.

dancineyes ( ) posted Sun, 14 October 2001 at 7:16 PM

Yes! They were great. I used to play "School" with mine (Gee, go figure) but "I" was the teacher in my little play world and the stuffed animals and dolls were the "Students!" ...LOL You know I'll have to ask my Mom, I think she still might have mine in the attic. I should have her get it for my 2 children. If I didn't think they would freak out and tell me how OLD I am! The trick would be getting it from California to Ohio where I live now! I can hear my kids now "Thank gosh!" Ha Ha!

Sharen - you two always do such good work! Something I've been looking for online forever is the older, turn-of-the-century style Inkwell desks used fm about 1860-1930 - the school I went to in the 50's was still using them, Bolted on wooden rails in rows of 6-8 to keep kids from skooting them around during class & they represent the essence of my childhood schooldays to me. If anyone comes across any like these, or makes any, PLEASE let me know! *Hint*Hint* *G*

Niles ( ) posted Sun, 14 October 2001 at 11:59 PM

If you find the 1860-1930 desk, post the link. I have been looking also. Niles And sharen for the freebie, I need that one also. Niles

SAMS3D ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 3:54 AM

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 3:58 AM

SAMS3D ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 4:17 AM

You remember where the ink well holes were, you do not....I don't believe you had desks like this, you know I am going to ask Mike if he had a desk like this....you are just a spring chicken....yes, that is it. Sharen

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 4:21 AM

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 5:09 AM

heh heh heh.. can I take the fifth on that one? I'm not sure of teh statute of limitations on that 8 ) and I didn't place a sap laden birch log into the fire either! 8)

Irish ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:39 AM

I definately remember having desks like this! You couldn't raise the top but stored all your stuff underneath - usually the underside of the desktop was heaped with old wads of gum...yuck! They certainly were great desks and you could often pick them up at flea markets or yard sales but don't see any today....and yep, the inkwell was on the right. Being left-handed, this made for an extra effort on my part :) Thanks for the memories! :) Irene

Niles ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:49 AM

About taking the 5th on that one, well as far as "statute of limitations"...I was always told it went on "Your Premanent Record". Boy, would like to get a copy of my record. :) Niles

So, do you think this will pass as what you wanted, the old ink well desk....will be available tomorrow morning for download. Let me know Sharen

Niles ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:28 PM

Looks great to me...I am working on some "Rockwell" stuff for my mother, and this will be great. Thanks Niles

leather-guy ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:39 PM

Sharen; This is truely incredible! I have quite honestly been searching for this model since I first learned to put clothes on a poser figure! I can't express how wonderful this model is to me! It's the first thing I wanted to try making when I finally get into modeling this winter! G BTW, Can the seat be swiveled up or removed? Will there be a template to customize? (every desk I ever sat at had 40-50 years of accumulated graffitti scratched into the finish by bored students) LOL! This is wonderful! - Many many thanks! Render On! Jerry B

SAMS3D ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:47 PM

You know, I think I rushed it a bit, it does have a customized texture map, but it isn't too good, no this is not poseable, I didn't think it was suppose to be. As far as retexturing it, you can go over mine or remake a new one in UV Mapper. This is 3 pieces in the object map, the wood, the ink well and the wroght iron. Sorry, maybe if we have time we can make it poseable, but the best we can do is separate the 3 items on it. Let me know and we can give it a shot again, until then this is ready tomorrow in freebies as I stated. Okay....time for bed. Sharen

jamball77 ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 7:47 PM

Wow Nice Nice Desk.

leather-guy ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 8:44 PM

I think it's beautiful as it is! The front seat was designed to pivot up, but after a few years, many rusted in the down position, or broke off. LOL My strongest recollections were the ancient chipped & scratched surfaces, revarnished & scatched again the next semester (Schools never had the budget to sand first - just slap on more varnish over the scratches, gumwads, & inkstains). Some had box-style interiors & fold-up tops, but most were like this, with the under-shelf. Since they were usually bolted down on 1X4 boards front-to-back in lines of 6 or so, whenever it was time for tests or readings (or movies) all would standup & scoot each row around with a horrendous scraping. It was an oft-repeated tale that boys loved to dip the pigtails of the girls ahead of them in their inkwells, so many classes had girls in one row, boys in another (never saw anyone do it, or any girls with black tips, but that was a popular schoolyard legend). Ah, well; I'm waxing 'way too nostalgic here, so I'll just say again; Many many thanks - SAMS3D ROCKS! :-))))))

I made one long ago. Did anyone ever DL it? Greyskin

leather-guy ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 9:26 PM

Greyskin; Hi! ) Your desk looks very good, much like the type the college I went to had. I'd love to have it, too. but when I clicked thru on the link, I found 404 errors on most of the downloads, & no images across the top line (just blank boxes with the red-X in the corner) I'll try again, later, but the EldenDesk(term I just made upG) is the specific & exact style I've wanted most. Thanks for the tip; Render On!

Greyskin ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 11:35 PM

Darn Geocities. They do it all the time. Think its fixed let me know.

leather-guy ( ) posted Mon, 15 October 2001 at 11:59 PM

That did it! Nice work, indeed! Many thanks :-)

Wizzard ( ) posted Tue, 16 October 2001 at 12:36 AM

wow.. Mike really did it! and that fast? from my memory, naught moved on the desks.. about the only thing that was moveable was the inkpot from the inkwell 8 ) beautifully done... just toss a wrought iron texture on the metal 8 ) (basically a blackish grey) beautiful work... thank ye both 8 )

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 16 October 2001 at 3:35 AM

Actually the ink well is the only think that is moveable, so we can pose those little kids with some hair being dipped. Greyskin, your desk is great, I like your texturing. We must all want to be back in school thinking of these desks. Sharen:-)

Wizzard ( ) posted Tue, 16 October 2001 at 4:33 AM

well... if you really think about it whilst laying down, i.e. sideways, we are all in a school of a sorts 8 ) many of us come here to learn new or neat things about the programmes we use. some of us try to impart nifty things we've learned to others so they don't have to go through the turmoil we did. so maybe we're just trying to find a compfy seat? 8 ) Cheers

leather-guy ( ) posted Tue, 16 October 2001 at 9:43 PM

SAMS3D came thru again! The inkwell desk is up at their site! Thank you, Sharen & Mike! (This is SUPER!!!!)
