Subject: So whats the wall made of ?

RorrKonn ( ) posted Sun, 04 March 2018 at 12:33 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 3:44 AM

I'm trying to make textures. So what material is the wall made of and do you think it's any good ? Open to suggestions on making it better :)

Thanks

Looks like concrete to me, too. Maybe add the Spots node in a slightly different colour, along with a little bump/displacement for the spots. Also, something to give the impression of dirt at the lower edges and around the floor where it meets the wall.

I assume that this is concrete. The speculars look wrong, though. Concrete is either really rough, or it is polished, IMHO. The flat parts are too rough for being polished but to shiny for not being polished.

Looks like concrete to me too. But big blocks like that seem impractical which makes me wonder if it isn't supposed to be plaster. But it's kinda gray for that and the smooth parts are too rough.

There are buildings over here made from concrete slabs about that size. It was a thing during the 1960s, to build stuff quick and cheap. In fact, my children go to a school that's largely built in that way. I don't think the roughness is a problem here; it could be very old or badly made.

What are you trying to accomplish with this texture? We can help you get there.

Could be fiberglass, and kind of looks like the type used for ceiling tiles.

On the exterior of a building, a flat top surface with pits is generally stucco, not concrete. Some textured paints and tiles have the same pattern.

New concrete is typically smooth. Concrete as it ages tends to lose the mortar and keep the sand, which is the opposite of your surface. Flat underlayer, protrusive sand.

It's a basic C4D render .Basic C4D is basically a modeler with a very simple renderer ,so I have little control over specular. So I'm blaming the app for my total lack of rendering skills ;) Anyways I've been terrorizing Gimp n Labs or Gimp's n Labs been terrorizing me ,hard to say.but we had fun making this WIP. Final versions will be dirty around the seems.

I know I'm no texturing expert ,So as long as I can get close to concrete stucco etc etc I'm good :)

Looks better but it could do with losing the green/purple blotches.

Am I looking at an optical illusion or are those tiles actually bowing out?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Mon, 05 March 2018 at 2:34 PM

I wondered if it's a rendering anomaly. You know how Poser loves to self shadow polys sometimes? Maybe a similar kind of thing.

Few of things I can suggest:

  1. If you use the girl in the render as reference, then the texture is way too large. I don't mean the blocks but the noise/distortion in the concrete is too large.

  2. Some details you can add: Graffiti, oil/piss stains, moss/fungus growing around the seams, splotches of old paint, pasted flyers and old 'shadows' from flyers... You may also want to have some of the blocks sticking slightly outwards.

  3. The normals of your wall mesh seem messed up, which is why you're getting that balloon like look. Make sure the normals of each face are hardened. I dunno how to do this in C4D though, sorry.

RorrKonn ( ) posted Mon, 05 March 2018 at 11:52 PM

I know humans can get bruised ,I've herd of fruit being bruised. but concrete ,hummm .don't know about that one ;)

1 agree 100% but I don't dare go past 2048x2048 pixels in gimp .so that as about as good as detail I can get out of gimp with out just making noise.I know I need photoshop n filters. I know photoshop will do 8192x8192 pixels.

2 I get it.

3.Basic 9 would stretch subdivided textures really bad also. it's just the simple render engine making a distorting bow. Never had there top render engine. It's my fav modeler thou .My basic C4D 9 modeler is so old normals hadn't been invented yet. Yes ,yes sad but true ,We didn't have normals n vector maps in the stone age ,truly dark days.but it's still a killer modeler. Maybe one day I'll get a upgraded modeler .

I need better software ,That's all there is to it. Wonder if MickyD's is hiring ;)

Prefabricated concrete slabs used for construction tend to be of a size that can be easily carried on a truck. The truck has to reach the building site so there is a limit of about 2.5 m in one direction. If these are prefab slabs they look too large.

Such slabs usually have edge and corner damages from handling, incomplete mixing of the grout in the mould, etc. They also usually have some sort of system to keep them togeher, usually dowels or threaded steel with nuts. This locking system is located in holes in the concrete that are sealed off by the constructor. He is responsible for the construction and does not want anyone to tamper with the locking or rust/water to attack it. So, there usually are circular spots of 10-12 cm diameter arranged along the lower and upper edges, spaced practical distances. The openings are also used for lifting the slabs into place.

Then for the texture: I agree it is too large scale. Hint for texturing: you can use the y-component of the normal vectors (green channel output by the n-node) to identify horizontal spots where dust and dirt may gather.

Your talking about Poser nodes ?

No bump or normal just a diffuse color. The father a way views that just look like noise to me. The close up is all most bearable but still don't like it. I've never like textures with a lot of noise in them.

I get the prefab construction dowels n all and I hear ya but for now we'll keeping it simple and concentrating on textures. The future up grades ?
