Subject: Anyone familiar with the Manuel Bastioni LAB plugin for Blender?

Miss B ( ) posted Sat, 30 June 2018 at 9:25 PM ยท edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 10:55 PM

Someone on the HiveWire forums posted asking how to install it, so I did a search, found it and the installation instructions.

That said, I'm not familiar with this plugin, which supposedly is good for versions 2.77 and 2.78 (and probably 2.79), which states it's for character creation, and I'm wondering if anyone has played with it, and has some comments, good, bad or indifferent, about it.

Yes, I have generated figures which I later used as FBX rigs inside Poser Pro 11, or exported the OBJs and rigged inside Poser Pro 11. The figures are generated in A pose, but you can adjust them to a T-pose inside Blender, or just work with them as they are. I like the plug-in because they also generate male and female anime-style versions, which is my preferred area of 3D CG projects.

Oh, I believe later versions of the plug-in can allow T-pose (can't recall, not used it in a while).

It is derived from Make Human but from what I seen it is allot more advance and has more features than the make human plug in and updates come out more frequently than make human I have not played with it but have heard many positive reviews

Thanks Infinity, I've seen some of the characters you've created, but didn't realize it was this plugin you were using. Good to know.

Yes Lobo, I've heard of Make Human, but never thought about getting it. I'm a total n00b when it comes to rigging, even clothing, so haven't felt a need to pursue it. With a plugin for Blender, however, I could play with it and see. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have played with Make human but never really captured my attention much but Manuel Bastioni LAB seems more streamline and feature rich and is seems he is regularly making updates to it

Yes, I saw the list of updates on, I think, the download page, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Manuel Bastoni plug in works very nicely in 2.79. Have used it several times has a lot of pose and expression controls plus all the presets. Blender.jpg

No Worries Miss B The T pose is not how the model comes out but with a click it is set to it
The black modesty bands are easily removed with the removal of a texture. There a lot of options to play with. The older versions were a bit poser like, this one is slightly different but easier to work with I think.Blender1.jpg

Yes, I read somewhere about the modesty bands, and that's fine. Better to be prepared for folks who have young children in the house. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's good there's an option to automatically change to the T Pose, as that's what most folks, except those who work a lot with Marvelous Designer, are used to.

I know, but I have on occasion taken my laptop with me when visiting a friend for the day, and her son was just 12 in April, so I'm always checking to see where he is before heading to any of the 3D forums/stores. ๐Ÿ˜„

I'm pretty much obsessed with Manuel Bastioni Lab (MBL) right now. Seriously... I need a 12 step program because I'm ignoring my work and family, lol. MBL is essentially what Poser 1 might have been had it been created in 2016: It creates figures only and you'll have to roll your own content. Plus it uses PBR textures, It has an advanced IK system, you can create male, female, anime and fantasy figures with a wide variety of ethnicities, comes with a ton of morphs and expressions, plus a handful of poses. If you want hair and clothes you have to make them yourself as there is no marketplace... yet.

MBL Quicksuit evenflo.pngMBL Quicksuit evenflo2.png

I've been working on quicksuits for clothing by resizing Joe Quick's Quicksuits from Share CG. MBL uses a proxy system to fit clothing. It's essentially conforming clothing but the mesh attaches to the figure's armature rather than creating a new one in the clothing. It also uses a muscle system rather than JCMs to deal with deformations when posing. All the bones, muscles, scaling and weight maps are used to conform the proxy to your customized figure. It's a one click process once a mesh is sized to a base figure, sweet!

MBL Quicksuit LoRez.png

This one is wearing a lo rez quicksuit. I like that it avoids the "boob socks" which is why it's tested on a full figured lady. The clothes are a single mesh with transparency and mat zones added. I learned a lot about creating Cycles materials on this render.

The lab is raw. It packs an amazing amount of functionality inside a single plug in and it can be rough around the edges. It's created by a single developer though, and he's improving it at an amazing pace. There's so much potential in this add on it blows my mind.

Can you tell that i like this add on?
