I believe it is some kind of auto exposure adjust tool which you can use to adjust the Iray preview render on the fly. Click onto it and you will notice your cursor will change and you can draw a square over part of your scene to adjust the Exposure or just click and release to set exposure by a single pixel. You can also change the tool to adjust different settings in the Draw Style tab under advanced. The options include Exposure, White Balance or both. It has always been there as far as I am aware, but you probably have just never noticed it till you accidentally changed the settings in the view port.
I'm not sure if it can be removed, I had a bit of a look but couldn't really find an easy way.
But if you do accidentally click on it just draw a large square over as much of the preview window as you can and the exposure will be adjusted pretty evenly. If you find it has blown out or overly darkened your preview, or you want to just remove the adjustment you have made bey accident you can always go to the Draw Style window and using the drop down select Restore Render Setting Defaults which sets every back to how they render by default.

Last night this icon suddenly showed up in the Aux screen next to the NVIDIA setting. I've never seen it before but it seems to be associated with the draw settings because it makes the image look like a sketch. I accidentally hit it instead of the NVIDIA symbol and couldn't get the cursor to come back to the regular setting. How do I get rid of this thing (two yen/yang triangles)?
