Subject: Tedious: .tif images freeze P11Pro ?!

mackis3D ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2018 at 6:39 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 1:08 PM

I was searching for the topic but didn't found anything... When I apply a MAT-file that includes a link to a .tif image file Poser 11 Pro immediately freezes. Never encountered the problem before...

It is possible to load a figure or prop into P11Pro that includes a link to a *.tif file - but it also freezes if I try to enter the material room.

I have to close the app via the taskmanager...

This happens no matter whether I try it with Firefly or Superfly materials.

Any solutions to this problem? The workaround to convert everything I need into *.jpg files isn't that great.

There was no problem at all in PP 2014 but it makes no sense to apply the MATs there because I want to render in P11Pro Superfly and need to use the material room.

I don't know for sure if Poser recognizes TIF images, but certainly the weight of a TIF image is much greater than a JPG image. Since you obviously don't want to lose quality of the texture, have you tried exporting it as a PNG, as it's not lossy like JPG, and is much lighter in weight than a TIF file.

No I haven't. The weird thing is - since you've mentioned the weight - I looked for it: they are for example 4096x4096 pixel large but only between 200 and 300 KB. The converted .jpg files are between 530 and 630 KB.

I've searched now just for *.tif files in my runtime and it turns out that I have some that work in P11P with no problem at all. but they don't "weigh" much more, around 500 KB to 1 MB.

Still there must be a reason why they all seemed to work in PP2014 but only a few in P11P. I opened them in Photoshop but I don't have a clue. I don't see any difference.

Ohhh, that is strange. I've never tried using TIF files in any Poser version, so haven't a clue what the issue is. The usually high weight size is what I find the hardest to get around in any software app, but if yours are so light weight, then there has to be something else that's causing your computer to have issues.

Irfanview may help, it has a batch conversion command that can process hundreds of files very quickly and you may find a TIF to TIF or a TIF to PNG conversion might fix the issue without going to JPG.

Never had a problem with TIF images from other vendors but I always use PNG. I have noticed something strange with JPG now and again, though; sometimes, a texture map will load - and render - at half the value it's supposed to be, even if the texture strength is at 100%. The only way to cure it - that works for me - is to load it into Photoshop and save it under another name. Same file and everything but once resaved, it renders just fine and dandy. I've had it happen with some of my own (old pre PNG) , some of Blackhearted's and several others.

As an aside, I am getting very hacked off with materials that still do stuff the Poser 4 way, and most particularly those that are in the Pose folder. I get so angry I could rip a sheet of paper in two. Yeah, I'm dangerous, me.
