Subject: Exclude Sky Dome from effects of Atmosphere?

aztecmarco ( ) posted Wed, 05 December 2018 at 2:00 PM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 11:03 PM

Hello, I'm trying to create a space themed image using Coflek-gnorg's Space Debris props. Is there a way to add an atmospheric effect to the scene without occluding the space prop that I'm using as a backdrop? Please notice the effect on the attached image. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. I should add I'm using Poser Pro 11.example.jpg

I'm not sure what you are asking ... but if you are referring to the construct (sky dome that opens when Poser 11 loads) then you merely make it invisible in "properties".

It's kind of like the poser construct but it a sphere object with a star field texture applied to it. I actually want to be able to see it without the Poser atmosphere material affecting it. So basically you would see the effect of the atmosphere on all the object in the scene except the surrounding sphere/environment object. Thank you so much for your reply, I really do appreciate it. Sorry to be so vague about it, it's kind of a rough concept to try and explain. Attached is a version with no atmosphere effect applied. Example two.jpg

I hate to say this ... but I don't believe you can pick and choose what the atmosphere (by its very nature) can affect. Its purpose is to affect the entire scene if you think about it.

You could try maybe adding an appropriately sized ball prop with a volumetric texture on it to simulate atmosphere. It may give what you're after.

You could possibly try using a material similar to the effect in this thread at SM's forums.

Awesome, I'll give that a try. Thank you both for your help.

Which render engine? FireFly or SuperFly?

What unit of measure do you normally think in, feet or meters?

Sorry for the late reply, I'm using FireFly. I'm still not comfortable with SuperFly.

I asked two questions. Second was What unit of measure do you normally think in, feet or meters?

Oop sorry Feet

OK first I set my Poser Display Unit to feet.

I have set up some spaceships and some squares. The first square is at world origin 0, 0, 0. The other squares are each 100 feet behind the previous, and each spaceship is just behind and beside each square. So the backmost spaceship is a little over 400 feet from the origin. I do not yet have a background, so here are my spaceships rendered as png.

Because this is a PNG without background, these ships will appear in this forum against whatever background color you see here.

Now I have loaded a background image (horsehead nebula) on a poser one-sided square that I scaled and positioned behind all the ships. The nebula prop is zTran -800 feet so is very far back. You may have to adjust your camera yon to see something this far away.

The stark white light does not give a good impression of being in the nebula so I wish to use atmosphere to help the illusion a bit.

I pick a green color from the nebula image itself and set up maximum color blend at 600 feet.

The atmosphere nicely colors my ships. Unfortunately, the atmosphere completely obliterates my background prop as it is more than 600 feet away.

What I do now is set up the atmosphere to basically get turned off for any pixel that is more than 500 feet away. You can use any number in the place indicated for your cutoff distance.

Now my background prop is unaffected by the atmosphere.

I believe this is what you were trying to achieve.

After hiding the squares and rendering larger, this is the result.

The same will happen with a sphere, so long as the camera is not seeing any part of the sphere that is closer than the cutoff distance. My EnvSphere defaults to a radius of 750 feet so easily works with this setup, so long as the camera is mostly pointing straight along the Z axis.

Here I have a cloudy star field on my environment sphere which I enlarged to 1500 feet radius.

I hate to see you say this because obviously I disproved it. ?
