in the first pic I put the spot light and face camera inside the room. The room has 4 walls and a ceiling. I use the top view cam in wireframe preview mode to navigate. I crank up the luminous flux to around 5000 lm. In the second pic, I switched to Iray preview mode, and the 'face cam) which was inside the room

[Place display text here](Place link URL here)I make use of the Point At features often in portrait lighting They are other lights to use beside spot lights. You can turn any objects, or even material zones into a light (emitter) PBR light is very close to RL photographic lighting. It follows the Inverse-square formula.

Hide the room and test the render, see if the light works, if it does then something in the room is probably obscuring the light or camera or both, use the preview camera to look around the interior of your scene in texture mode, making sure the render camera is set to visible. you will then see if anything obscures it.... if it still is not working and nothing is obscuring and it doesn't light without the room visible then we can go from there.
Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

Okay, seriously, is there a less intuitive piece of software?
I have turned off the environment light...I only want to work with lights I've added to the scene.
The scene is closed...four walls a floor and ceiling...without a light, nothing renders...blackness...good!....(finally)....now I add a spotlight, it is totally in the room, camera is inside the room...nothing renders. Intensity is 100%, and the preview spread angle and distance cone all good in preview....
nothing renders! BAD!
This software is just as frustrating if not more than I remember it being five years ago.
Any tips on making a spot light actually light spots????
