Subject: Mac Queue Render threads

an0malaus ( ) posted Thu, 27 August 2020 at 11:39 PM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 4:49 PM

I'm trying to confirm whether there is a configuration parameter or setting which controls how many threads the QueueManager will use when sending a render to a remote mac render node.

I have a late 2013 iMac which has had a CPU upgrade from an i5 (4 cores and 4 threads) to an i7 (4 cores but 8 threads). Poser 11.3.818 running on that iMac can render with all 8 threads (following the changed Preference setting in Poser), whether in foreground or background, but a render sent to that iMac from another only ever uses 4 threads (50% CPU utilisation) for queued renders. i can see when I look in the queue render xml file that it's been told to use 4 threads, but I can't work out where that number has come from.

Has anyone else experienced mac queue renders only using half the available threads?

Make sure the queue is not running or it will overwrite any changes you make when it exits.

  • HD > Users > (username) > Library > Application Support > Queue Manager > {Version Number}
  • Find QueuePrefs.XML
  • Edit the value of RenderThrerads="xxx" to the number threads you want to use.
  • Save file and relaunch queue

Thanks Charles. Can you confirm where that number is initially derived from? Does QM or the QM installer determine the default number by asking the OS what kind of CPU is available? The 4 threads was correct for the i5 CPU, so I didn't expect it to change after I replaced that with an i7, but it certainly may have been the case that QM was running while I was making changes, and overwrote what I'd saved when it exited. I will try your suggestion and see if it sticks.

Oh Yeah! Nothing succeeds like a budgie with no beak. Sorted. Remote QM now rendering on 8 threads in CPU upgraded iMac.

Thanks again, Charles.

Now I just need to blow enough cold air into this iMac to stop CPU throttling when the cores heat up.
