Subject: Is it impossible to upgrade from Poser Pro 2014?

contedesfees ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2020 at 9:02 PM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 11:34 PM

Am I correct in assuming that one cannot upgrade from Poser Pro 2014 to Poser 12 at the upgrade price? My current and functioning PP2014 serial number failed the eligibility test here at Renderosity and the page offering the upgrade clearly states "Poser 11 only." Thanks to all who reply.

Necromuncher ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2020 at 9:04 PM

As far as I know, you'd have to upgrade to Poser 11 first before you can upgrade to Poser 12.

contedesfees ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2020 at 9:20 PM

Thanks, Necromuncher. I've taken a quick look around and see no means of upgrading to Poser 11. Further, almost all software vendors acknowledge the eligibility of nearly all previous versions as valid upgrade paths. For example, an owner of Photoshop Elements 12, which is several years old now, can upgrade to Photoshop Elements 2021 at the upgrade price. Likewise, users of Corel Painter 2016 can upgrade to Painter 2021, again at the upgrade price. Renderosity seems to be obliging former users to buy the full version of Poser 12 at $250, which looks coercive to me.

They announced this several months ago.

https://www.posersoftware.com/article/482/poser-12-update-pricing-announced-for-full-version-upgrade

They warned us it would be cheaper to upgrade to Poser 11, then to Poser 12, but that it had to be done before Poser 12 became available.

I guess I missed the memo. Thanks randym77. Shame on me.

@ contedesfees It would not of made a big difference buying Poser 11.3 first just to get a save on 12, rather then paying the full price now ! and why buy a Program that is announced to be taken down a week after purchase that has a call home system integrated ? It would be like gifting your money to Renderosity ! Best would be right now to wait up until the early release gets final and then decide weather to buy Poser 12, and hope that it goes faster then the updates they made on SM Poser as they were not finished after a Year. so with a little luck you get a working Poser 12 before they launch poser 13 in a year or more :)

Maybe there will be a sale if you wait. TBH, I don't think there's a lot of reason to upgrade right now. I bought Poser 12 to support the cause (and I won a copy in the Halloween contest, which Rosity kindly allowed me to give away). It's not that different from Poser 11, and there's a lot of bugs. Scripts mostly don't work, unless they've been edited to work in the new version of Python. Superfly is faster than in P11, but a lot of shaders don't work like they used to and have to be fixed.

Since you missed the upgrade window, I think the only reason to upgrade now is if you want all the free content that comes with Poser 12.

contedesfees, you want the $80 Poser 11 Pro at NeoWin Deals. The offer is still on, at least for the next five days.

@ Azath, @ randym77, @ HartyBart - Many thanks for your sensible comments. Your observations are appreciated. I skipped Poser 11 because it didn't seem to offer very much and now I'm not sure that Poser 12 is a necessary investment. After all, Dawn and Dusk, La Femme and L'Homme have not captured my imagination. As a matter of fact, I was becoming quite comfortable with Poser Pro 2014 and my stable of V4 morphs. Indeed I enjoyed myself. Being a hobbyist and not a professional, I might just totter along with PP2014 for the foreseeable future. I must replace a failing hard drive; I'd like a little more RAM memory, and, as we all know, money doesn't grow on trees.

Cheers, and stay healthy.

My sympathies. I was caught thus when I thought to upgrade my nice CAD package to latest, which now supported FBX. No, my premium CAD Pro platinum version was a year too old to qualify for any discount. [Sundry expletives redacted...]

Fortunately, while I was tying to figure pros & cons vs budget, I discovered latest CAD version still did not support OBJs' MTL, and the FBX handling was minimal. [More expletives redacted...]

I've had to track down another CAD suite which did play nice with OBJ+MTL models. Happens it would be less expensive than expected, but I've not yet had chance to test-run their trial month...

IMHO, YMMV, may I suggest waiting for Poser_12.1, expected ~Q2_2021 ? There's a bunch of icky bugs in 12.0, currently being swatted. Also, per news-letters, some 'good stuff' that didn't make the 12.0 release...

FWIW, no-one seems to have tried the 'improved FBX' support in P_12.0...

@ NikKelly. Thanks for yours. I think I just get comfortable with PP2014 for a little while. Life goes on.

Is your 2014 by chance the game dev version? If so, we were offered free upgrades to P11 when the 11.2 update came out due to the phoning home in game dev failing after the buyout.

Aah, but Christmas is coming. Who knows what good it will bring.

Poser 11 is available again, for a limited time.

https://www.renderosity.com/article/23687/get-poser-11-for-9999-for-a-limited-time

Until the end of the month, you can buy Poser 11 for $99. Then get the upgrade price for Poser 12, if you want to upgrade. It'll save a few bucks from buying Poser 12 directly.

And TBH, Poser 12 still has a lot of issues, so you might want to keep Poser 11 for awhile even if you upgrade.

@randym77 - Thanks for yours. I really do appreciate it. Stay safe until it's over.
