Subject: Question: Does anyone here use props like Jukeboxes anymore?

EClark1894 ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2020 at 4:54 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 12:24 AM

Or are they obsolete? I was thinking about making a freebie, but wonder if I should even bother.

I don't see why not. There is a resurgence of vinyl records and even if the jukebox has been converted to digital, there is something still nostalgic about the classic machine. It is Americana repeated in every bar across the country.

Yeah, I agree. Make the jukebox. :)

A steampunk jukebox would probably have a lot of fans?

I hate steampunk, so that's not likely to happen. But I will start on the jukebox from the 50s.

I love Jukeboxes, particularly the ones where you can see the racked up singles and a small turntable.

I know everyone thinks of the Wurlitzer but, IMO, there were more interesting designs out there.

I actually bought a jukebox from the RMP during the Black Friday sale. There's also a couple freebies at ShareCG. They are all Wurlitzer style, but there's a lot of variation even among Wurlitzers.

Here's a style that's different from the "Wurlitzer". They call this one the "Selectomatic." My aunt used to own a restaurant when I was a kid and now that I remember, the jukebox was more of the Selectomatic style.

OMG. My grandmother ran a diner-type restaurant for decades, with a jukebox like that. Her diner was stuck in the 1950s well into the '90s. Antique dealers used to come in and try to buy her equipment, including the jukebox.

Minyassa ( ) posted Sun, 13 December 2020 at 12:31 PM

I adore jukeboxes and I have yet to render a scene in a retro 50s style diner I have slowly put together over many years (it is a RPG setting). There can never been too many jukebox models.

EClark1894 ( ) posted Mon, 14 December 2020 at 12:17 PM

Just to let you know. I'm still working on that jukebox.

As much as I love the Whirletzer's (sp) I'd like to see the second one made. I have a model of the first ... but I remember seeing the second one in cafes as child and teen. That is familiar to me and I haven't seen any models of that type.

don't forget the little tabletop boxes that would be at each table in a diner. I've only seen those on tv, but I've seen plenty of the big ones in real life.

You mean like this one? Personally, I never liked this kind.

I always wondered how those "satellite" units worked with the master player. I assume special cable linked them and the wiring was "snaked" through the wall, out of sight. meaning the dining tables could not be moved much if at all if the owners wanted the tabletop units to still work.

I meant the Selectomatic. I do believe somewhere in our cafe sets we have the table side selectors.

I've never tackled a jukebox model but I made a 7" record if that's any help. Two versions, a UK version with a small spindle hole and the regular "jukebox" style US version.
