Subject: How's the FBX export?

Has anyone tried the FBX export yet? Multiple frames, not just a still? It's a mess in Poser11 and rarely works correctly, but I thought I read somewhere one of the features in 12 was improved export. Since they removed the poser fusion plug-ins I'd pretty much walked away from Poser, but if the FBX exporting is better now I might be tempted back.

You can try the Trial version and see if it has improved enough for you.

I tried exporting a FBX of a complex figure with a few prop add-ons to Blender, it turned into a jumbled mess.

I finally got around to downloading the trial of 12 and I can't even get 3dsMax or Cinema4D to load in the FBX files Poser is exporting. 3dsMax just does nothing when I try to load it in. Cinema4D tells me it's unable to read the file. Blender will load it but it's a jumbled mess as the poster above says. I really wish they hadn't removed the poserfusion plugins when Poser got bought. They just worked, no wondering what was going to be changed or messed up. Looks like no sale on upgrading to Poser 12 for me.

This is unfortunate. I was planning to upgrade to 12 hoping that export in FBX/DAE would be better but it seems it is not the case. I use Poser for, well Posing not for rendering. I used to use Reality a lot but I think I forget about that for 12, Fusion is no longer supported so FBX/DAE is the only to go if you want to render in other softwares. Upcoming Octane plugin might be worth it (no idea about the price). Very frustating

I think they are planning to improve FBX, they're not just not there yet.

I just did one real quick, (grouped Rigged and weight mapped in Poser 12) Unfortunately, since it is something I am creating for someone else, I can not show it, but I animated it in Poser 12 exported the animation as an FBX 2019 and loaded it up in Maya 2020.3 and came in as it should with no issues at all. I also know LaFemme goes there with no issues at all as well (didnt animate her just loaded her in and posed her a bit) I don't randomly download FBX files off the net so I can not speak for those things.

MY Character pipeline is FBX based. Reallusion CC3 to Blender and occasionally Daz studio to Blender.

My Advice is to go to the Autodesk website and Download the Old legacy 2013 FBX converter utility.

Now I know they have a much newer "FBX Review utility"

However the Older 2013 version has better FBX viewer that will display any facial morph based animation you export in your animation and the newer utility does not show morph based animation ,only bone based animation.

The reason I suggest doing this is because you can quickly test your FBX export to see if it has exported correctly from its origin app.

So that if it is not showing up correctly in your target application you know to Change your import settings because they can vary greatly based what figure you are importing as well as the application from where they were exported.FBX VEIW.JPG

Yes that may just be the issue (the target program they are trying to open the FBX in) and not really poser.

Reallusion CC3 does it properly

Daz studio and Blender..sometimes open them properly and sometimes not at all (or all mangled) though the same FBX can be opened elsewhere so ???.I cant say its Poser.

So yeah DL that FBX Review utility wolf359 suggested and then go from there.

And wolf359, why does your FBX Review utility look like that, the one I have is so.....Im using the autodesk one which one is that ? mine is so.....vanilla looking, to put it nicely, lol

I also have the newer FBX review (in your posted pic) as well

And it is OK for most things.?

However it does not read morph based facial animation/lipsync in my exports from CC3, And I need to see that they exported intact as part of my previs pipeline.

For me, the key to a multi application rendering pipeline is to NOT have to import a whole new copy of the Character from the Character app( DS,Iclone.poser etc) and redo textures every time they need to perform a new action.

Thus I Append new animation Data from Iclone/CC3 into existing Blender scenes via a bare bones FBX export to a temp folder and store the new motion data in the Blender action editor to be applied ,via a drop down list to the fully dressed textured actors just like how we apply Different Motion clips in Iclone or .DUF/anibocks or pz2 in Daz/Poser.?

The pic, I posted earlier, is the Old legacy 2013 Autodesk FBX converter that has its own advanced viewer app that you invoke with that button next to the "log" button on the right

Thankfully Autodesk still makes it available for download.?

Once you get your import settings sorted in your receiving app ( Max,C4D etc) you could perhaps save as an import preset as I have done in Blender for both CC3 & Daz studio

Ah ok, I don't use (or ever have honestly) the FBX convertor (no need to I guess)

I just export straight out of Maya or Houdini in FBX and they work in my preferred programs (in the past SideFX into Autodesk)) so never really needed to convert anything , But I did DL it now just to check it out and see all it has and or do ,thanks

I cannot think of single instance where I actually converted an FBX file to another version either.

IIRC that was more commonly needed back in the first decade of the 2000's before the major 3DCC's got closer to an industry standard or at least offered multiple export profile presets with the ,then called ,"Kaydara filmbox" format.

However the viewer portion of the old converter app has always been useful,particularly for reviewing FBX files with multiple embedded takes such as the ones I export from CC3 pipeline.

But most people today, would do just fine with that more recent "vanilla" viewer from Autodesk.

Yes, I like the viewer from the 2013 converter better (the one you showed).

I use that a lot. Very, very handy for exploring FBX files, reading 'hard-coded' paths to textures etc that should have been 'relative'. Or finding there are no texture calls, that they must be applied manually. No problem for half-a-dozen, but 90++ ??

Also, for robust conversion to OBJ+MTL.

Sadly, it seems unable to access some recent v7.5+ FBX versions, reporting invalid / corrupted files...

The 'new' FBX Review displays such, but lacks the tools to convert them. And, the 'scale to screen' option is a tad cranky, often zooming models to 'godzilla' proportions so all you see is a shadow or foot...
