OK. I set up a very short animation in DS, exported the BVH, then applied it to the imported FBX inside Poser 12. Genesis 8.1 does indeed animate inside Poser 12.

I made a slightly longer animation in Daz Studio, exported it as BVH, and imported it for the FBX inside Poser 12.

Getting the model out seems pretty (okay sort of) straightforward, but what about all the textures? Is there a way to export those, or would I have to find the image maps and rebuild everyone?

Daz Studio export as FBX will have a pop up screen to let you choose which option you prefer. I have all the textures embedded because it's just simpler for me.

Then there are people that do not install DS CMS/DIM (which means DS won't work). WHEN are we going to be able to simply read and use the DUF format in Poser?

It is the first key element in his process. As that user states, one must EXPORT the Figure first for POSER to IMPORT the Figure. Without the means to EXPORT that Figure, this is an exercise in futility. THAT is what it has to do with it. It is nice to know that the method works. But if one is so adept with DS then why bother with Poser? That seems the question posed by Users of DS and Poser in the old Usenet Newsgroup. Poser needs to be able to read and use the DUF format.

I have probably missed something imported because I just tested with a Vi8 out of the box: it comes in Poser 12 smoothly, in its default pose, but everything is exploded in the Hierarchy Window:
Result: the import doesn't work well. Example with one the default poses:

Yeah, the export options inside Daz Studio, I think... see my post of @4414441 - the screen capture truncates my Hierachy window in Poser, but you can see that there are no extra parts outside of the Genesis 8.1 figure

@Y-Phil - try using the 2019 FBX instead of the 2014 FBX export.
Aha... I understand...

@y-phil - My apologies.
Here is my screen capture of the Genesis8.1 export to FBX to produce that image I posted early in this thread. ( As also mentioned, the motion does not translate over, and I have to separately export the BVH and then apply it in Poser to get the figure posed.)

Definitely better! Huge thankies... ??? And... without "Animations" checked because I retrieve a kind of small stack of things... lol
Test done with a Gen8 character, created by a friend. The next step: the materials, but I'll do that later ❤

Here is the final result, using Cycles and double-layer system:
Not really useable in a close-up, as it doesn't seem to be changed to poser-unimesh, so: no subd. Anyway, I'm happy with this...
Thank you so much @infinity10 ??

Ok ... I'm confused. (that's no surprise) ... why do we need to import a BVH? If imported properly into Poser do the figures actually have access to all their morphs (both Posing and Shape). Because I see under the "yes" the whole list of poses and "not used" noted. Do I have to animate the figure to have the poses available? I try turning a head and the head elements don't follow and the head is distorted.

A very good point primorge. But the genesis figures do have the advantage of having far more detailed characters and rigging and natural poses than most of the native Poser figures. The variety is also nice to have. Heck I still have Dina and Andrea Delgato!!

Can I be a stick in the mud and say I'm not seeing anything being done above in those images that can't be achieved with any number of Poser native figures. With a gigantic less amount of headaches.
One of the things I have noticed is that with a number of vendors, all of their characters look like they are very, very closely related. In addition, I need more than early '20's Caucasians.
So I need things like Kala 8, Sanjay 8, Latonya 8, Mrs. Chow, Sydney 8, Alexandra 8, Khemsit 8, Twoset 8 Josie 8, Edie 8, Monique 8, Ashan 8, Darius 8, Diego 8, Edwards 8, Floy i, Silas 8, Vladimir 8, etc.
In addition, most non-V4/M4 characters lack a basic wardrobe; with the clothing conversion software that is available (and has been available in some form for over a decade), my characters have quite the extensive wardrobe.
Yes, it is more work, yes, I would prefer to buy native clothing. But vendors for post V4/M4 are not going to make anything that doesn't "excite" them. So, if I need "non-exciting" clothes, I use the features available in Poser.

One more and the last time: Begin-[ You can NOT get anything at all done with DS 4.xx *UNLESS* the DIM and CMS combo are installed and *RUNNING* with the CMS logged into DAZ3D. All that sentence is prerequisite to USING DAZ Studio 4.xx which obviously has to work properly to load and export models, regardless of the format chosen. ]-EndI stil don't understand how installing CS/DIM works in relation to exporting an FBX format of the assets. I'm sorry. It appears I have a basic lack of understanding of how this is necessary.
SO, what other way is there to get the duf format Genesis 3 through 8.1 Figures into Poser? There is a way. IT is written and working. But a "Power That Be" (the one in charge of all Poser development) stomped their foot down and said "There is no way in Hell Poser will ever use Genesis 8!"
It is everything to the discussion from MY viewpoint.

I think you are mistaken. Bondware asked about getting DSON updated to work in Poser 12, and DAZ said no. Heck, DAZ has removed DSON from their site entirely. That was not Bondware's choice.

FBX exported from Daz Studio Pro and iported into Poser 12.
Default pose returned upon zeroing rotations after import, but posed version of exported FBX is not workable. Have to pose the imported figure inside Poser manually.
Superfly render with SS added.
