Subject: Reactivating Poser 2012?

Miscreate ( ) posted Mon, 22 March 2021 at 8:46 PM · edited Mon, 11 November 2024 at 11:59 AM

I purchased a copy of Poser 2012 some time ago, and for a while it seemed to work fine, with all content showing up as expected in the library. However, for the last several months I have been battling an ongoing illness that has occupied most of my time, and my graphics PC has been left idle. So, as you probably have guessed, without being opened and connected to a Renderosity server, I cannot access my content libraries and the program is useless. Is there any way that I can get this fixed? Or are the things that I am hearing true and Renderosity has permanently disabled the software that I paid for? I can't seem to find any clear answer to this anywhere. Thanks.

Is it Poser 12, or Poser Pro 2012? I notice people are still selling the latter. If it's Poser Pro 2012 you've been bitten by Adobe shutting down Flash, on which the libraries depended, and they won't work in any edition of Poser before Poser 11. There are supposed to be some workarounds available, but I've never tried any of them.

Thank you for responding, Jimmy. Yes. it is Poser Pro 2012, which I purchased from Smith Micro just before they sold Poser to Bondware/Renderosity. It was activated, did not require an internet connection, and worked fine. Then, Renderosity offered users of Poser Pro 2012 the opportunity to upgrade to the first version of their Poser 12, which offered Superfly and other enhancements, for free. OK, I thought, sounds like a good deal. I downloaded and installed the upgrade and it was working just fine, with all the features, and access to my existing content folders. Until I became ill and failed to routinely fire up and use the workstation it was installed on. When I did get around to doing so just recently, my installation of Poser 12, which had been working fine, had reverted back to Poser Pro 2012, which would have been fine if it had remained activated, but it wasn't - it needed to reactivate using the Smith Micro servers, which no longer were available. In short, I lost my application because of Bondware's DRM activation system. If I had not upgraded to Poser 12, I would still happily be using my perpetually licensed Poser Pro 2012. The issue had nothing to do with Flash, or Python. It was Poser 12's DRM.

Poser 2012 didn't have a phone home feature. It did however use flash in its library which is probably why you don't see any content. To get around that you need to switch to adobe air. To do this, Open your Poser.ini found in your settings normally in

AppData/Roaming/Poser Pro/ "Version of Poser"

Open the Poser.ini with Preferable Notepad ++ Free software. Activate in search Incremental search ! search for the line

LIBRARY_IS_AIR 0 and replace with LIBRARY_IS_AIR 1

LIBRARY_EMBEDDED_TYPE 0 and replace to LIBRARY_EMBEDDED_TYPE 1

the second might vary and makes no difference once you made the changes it will always drop to type 1 ... save your changes and your library will work again.

@RedPhantom: obviously you didn't read the OP second post, he upgraded to Bondware's Poser 12 and had been away for some time due to illness. He would like to reactivate that version because it time-lapsed due to inactivity.

This part doesn't make sense: "my installation of Poser 12, which had been working fine, had reverted back to Poser Pro 2012"

I'm not aware of any way that could happen. It seems more likely that both Poser 12 and Poser Pro 2012 are installed on the same computer. Poser Pro 2012 would have the problem RedPhantom describes. It's possible Poser 12 would stop working, for example because the registration information was never entered and it was actually in the free trial period, but it wouldn't uninstall itself, and it certainly wouldn't uninstall itself and install an older version in its place.

If Poser 12 did stop working, and it's not simply asking for a registration code or an internet connection, that sounds like something to ask Poser support about. https://support.posersoftware.com/

They offered a free upgrade to Poser 11 for existing Poser 10/2014 users. I'm not aware of them ever offering free upgrades to Poser 12, only 11, and I thought it only applied to owners of Poser 10/2014, because it required the online verification which would end once SM shut down their license servers.

Regardless, it's best to contact customer support for this for the most accurate information.

In re-reading the OP's post, I have to agree with AmbientShade about what transpired when Poser changed hands from SM to Bondware. And to be specific, the eligibility for the free upgrade was not for Poser 10/2014 users but Poser Pro 2014 Game Developer users who would be affected by the SM Servers shutting down. Poser Pro 2014 only does not phone home so it has a 'permanent' license allowing infinite logins. Now, if anyone has PP2012 or PP2014 and Poser 12 installed, the desktop icons are very different.

Anyway, AmbientShade is right, contact customer support.

Okay, thank you to all for helping out. In the end, I got my Poser Pro 2012 working again. Turns out that Red Phantom was correct, but it took me awhile to figure out that I needed to edit the .ini file in an update version, not the original version 9. So I have my content library back and PP2012 is functional again. Of course, I also get the undocked content pain issue, but I can live with that. As for Poser 12, I guess I have too many versions installed on too many machines. Sorry about that, and thanks again to everyone.
