I found this while perusing around YouTube today. Thought you might like to see if you need anything. If you've already seen this I'm sorry. Free Blender Add-ons

BOOKMARKED!! I need to look at it again, as he talks so fast I can't retain everything he's saying. I did notice a number of them already come with Blender.

Hmm, I haven't checked Blender 2.8 + for add-ons. I do know that I have ArchiMesh with 2.79.

As well as Loop Tools, Bool Tool, Node Wrangler, and ArchiPack (different from ArchiMesh). In the list under the video he lists each of the add-ons, and mentions which ones come with Blender.

That's exactly how you append in 2.79 as well, so that's not a new feature.

Okay, I found this YouTube video that shows how to install add-ons in Blender. I can't seem to make it work myself, though. I can't seem to find the install button even though the video is showing it to me. I'll watch it again though. In the meantime... How to Install Add-ons in Blender

Miss B ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2021 at 10:15 PM

The only way I've ever been able to do it, is with the Install Add-on From File button at the bottom of the User Preferences window, which pops up when you go to File > User Preferences, or Ctrl+Alt+U.

Oh so getting to the User Preferences has changed since version 2.79. I'll have to make a note of that for when I start playing with 2.8x and/or 2.9x

That's one of the reasons I've prolonged getting into 2.8x and/or 2.9x. I'm not sure I want to have to learn where in the UI everything is that's been changed from where it is in 2.79. ~sigh~

Fully understand that many of the UI changes are improvements in the right direction I feel especially in edit mode the fact that now there is a tool bar strip with the most used modeling tools is a good improvement especially for newer Blender users the major relearning I feels is in keyboard shortcuts one that I had to change was the space bar assignment now by default it activates the play in the keyframes so had to manual change it back to spacebar opens the search function instead which I find more useful. CG Boost offers for free a new keyboard shortcut PDF that is very useful I can't post the link since they also sell tutorials like we do not allowed but highly recommend it to find your way around.

Ohhh, I'll run over there and see if I can find it. They usually have some pretty good stuff.

The one thing I've always liked about Blender is the ability to assign/reassign keystroke shortcuts. That may be the only way I'll get used to using the newer versions.

I am pleased they are looking toward the newcomers to Blender, as so many have stated they can't find anything in 2.79, and they'll never be able to use it. We've been using Blender for a long time, so our familiarity with the UI grew with each new version. Now it's the newcomers who have a chance of getting familiar with it, and I admit that's a good thing. It's just going to take me some time to get comfortable with the newer versions.

Thank goodness I'll be able to keep 2.79 running with the newer version, as I'm very comfortable with it.

2.79 is defunct. Really, the 2.80, 2.90 versions are so much better, including the UI. These newer versions incorporate so many advances that it's impossible to overstate how far Blender has come in the last 2 years or so. And that's without mentioning add-ons like Boxcutter, HardOps, Fluent, Meshmachine et al that all keep pushing the envelope of what we can do in 3D. It really is worth diving into the latest versions. The improvements are vast, to say the least.

EClark1894 ( ) posted Thu, 29 April 2021 at 7:47 AM

"Defunct" is a harsh and inaccurate word. I was making stuff with Blender 2.79 as little as a few months ago, and there's nothing wrong with the program. still works fine. There are much "improved" versions out right now, or so I'm told. I haven't actually made anything so far with the "improved" Blender. Hell, I really just got it to finally start up for me about a week ago. :)

RubiconDigital ( ) posted Thu, 29 April 2021 at 8:01 AM

Harsh and inaccurate? Not really. Blender evolves and improves at an astonishing rate. 2.79 was a major improvement over previous versions but it it has had its day. Time to move on and enjoy all the new stuff that the current iterations are offering.

Well I still use 2.79 as well as the newer version except for version going back to 2.49 and 2.5 those I might consider defunct but I still run copies on my system from current to 2.49 just to have to ability to replicate issues member's might have and that I think is one of Blenders strongest attributes unlike so many other software's that overwrite previous installed versions you can have numerous version of Blender running and have the ability to fall back to a more familiar version if you run into problems or just need the comfort of having an old version to fall back on if having trouble learning the new one

WELL SAID!!! I couldn't have said it better. Versions 2.8 and 2.9 came out fast, and unlike a lot of other software, which take their time in upgrading to newer versions, I find that too fast. I also would prefer to have 2.79 installed for as long as it'll work on my computer, so I can create something in it, and one of the newer versions, for comparison. That way I can know if the newer versions are creating what I need as well as I can create in 2.79. Being comfortable with a certain version of software, doesn't make it "defunct" or "unusable" just because a newer version (or 2) have come out in a very short period of time.

Unlike Lobo, I don't have my old 2.4x, 2.5x or 2.6x versions installed, because it's been a very long time since they were introduced, but 2.8x is only 1 update higher, which doesn't make 2.79 unusable by any stretch of the imagination. I'll get to the newer versions . . . eventually. I'm just not in any need to rush into it.
