Subject: Question re: parenting a prop to a figure

yungturk39 ( ) posted Fri, 28 May 2021 at 11:31 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 11:40 AM

I'm curious as to whether anyone else has encountered this problem, and how you work around it.

I've found a pair of prop shoes for Aiko 3 (https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts10/home/clothes) that are meant to be parented to her feet. They load into the scene beautifully, and with the utility poses Aiko fits into them just fine. The problem occurs when I try to parent them to her feet so they can be used in poses apart from the default standing position. Once a shoe is parented to one of her feet, the shoe rotates and displaces itself, and I'm left having to manually correct its parameters in order to do my best to get it back to where it was. Is there an easier fix for this?

Any help would be appreciated!

There's a lot of problems with those files for the mcjTippyToes stiletto pumps.

First of all the png files are misnamed and include a .pz2 extension in the titles. That's why the previews aren't showing in the library. Dumping the .pz2 in the titles will let the pngs work as intended. For instance mcjA3ToePush.pz2.png should be renamed mcjA3ToePush.png

I loaded A3, turned off IK and zeroed the figure.

I the loaded the right and left prop shoes into the scene... Doing so I promptly recieved a nag from poser for a missing texture file, Sharp.jpg... No such texture file is included with the zips.

The instructions for the shoes indicate to apply mcjA3FitStilettos2.pz2 to A3 first. Doing so gives me this error message from poser...

So I opened the pz2 in a text editor and didn't see anything glaringly wrong with the formatting of the pz2. It looks like a standard morph injection that requires a community channel to inject (an old daz thing)... I did a pretty thorough compare to a working inject but couldn't find anything. Something's wrong with the indenting or a poorly spaced bracket. I've seen this error before and that's usually the culprit. Couldn't find it though.

Moving on...

EldritchCellar You certainly know your Poser, it was a good read. Thank you any tips on downloading Daz products to fit Poser 11?

EldritchCellar ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2021 at 3:28 AM

The second step to the instructions is to apply the mcjA3ToePush.pz2... another morph injection. This file worked fine. This is the file that I compared with the faulty one.

Next, as per the instructions, I applied the mcjA3PoseForMcjA3PumpsBeta.pz2 (jesus), a pose file. The pose worked as intended and A3 posed to fit the shoes.

Next I parented the right and left shoes to A3's right and left feet. Or rather her right foot as this is where I discovered the parenting issue...

My final opinion is either throw this in the trash... or mess about with the joint editor or convert the shoe models to conformers. I think I have more heels for poser figures than I'll ever use so off to the bin it goes :D

Maybe someone here who's really serious about Poser shoes can help, they're actually quite tricky. Hope this was at least entertaining :)

Yes. If it's in a zip file extract it to the desktop or some such and remove the runtime folder from within the content folder. Poser has no such content folder, it's useless and will just confuse Poser if you merge it like that with your target runtime.

Edit; I install everything by hand so I can't speak for any installation solutions. I got used to this from being a former longtime Mac user. Plus I like to know what's going where.

The webpage describes the prop as static and non-posable, a clear indication not to expect conformity with character posing. I am in agreement with EldritchCellar, if you seriously want to use these shoes in posing, you really need to convert them to conforming items which can be done in the P11 Fitting Room. And that is granted that the mesh does not distort after conversion.

EldritchCellar ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2021 at 5:31 PM

I've created a working fast fix for the shoes that will allow you to parent and pose the shoes without further issue. It involves surrogate parent smart props... I'll upload the files to my Google drive and instructions here when I get a chance.

You won't be able to bend the toes or the feet as they will be locked so there will be that limitation but the fix will work in all instances besides... Should be ok for most poses.

I'll follow through with the link and instructions after I've had some dinner...

Ok. This isn't perfect but it's fast and painless, less so than regrouping the shoes and chopping a cr2 to transfer a donor rig for a conformer (or various other methods). Being that the bends are so extreme to fit in the heels there realistically wouldn't be much need for further posing of the feet and toes in these shoes, except for perhaps twist and side to side.

Go to this Google Drive link and download the ParentSphere Fix zip.

ParentSphere Fix

This zip contains a Runtime with a library with pose and props folder. Place them in your library of choice, the poses and props do not reference a file path in geometries or textures. The props are simple low poly spheres with embedded geometry. They're smart props. The poses are lock and unlock utility poses for the feet and toes.

You'll also see a copy of mcjA3TippyToesL.pp2.

This is a corrected version of the left shoe prop file which will fix the nag from poser for a non existent sharp.jpg file. As the pp2 contains no morph or obj data I felt it was ok to include this fixed version. Replace the like named file in mcj's prop folder with this if you like...

Load A3

Disable IK on both legs through the Figure menu

Zero the rotations through the Figure menu or via the Joint Editor, you dont want to use the Zero figure command because that will zero alot more than just the pose rotations. Morphs for instance.

Load both shoe props provided by mcj

Apply the mcjA3ToePush.pz2 provided with mcj's installation to A3

Apply the mcjA3PoseForMcjA3PumpsBeta.pz2 provided with mcj's installation to A3

A3's feet will pose to fit the shoes.

Go to the prop folder I provided and load the !LeftParentSphere.pp2 and the !RightParentSphere.pp2 props into the scene. These spheres are smart props that will load parented to A3's feet. They are also invisible to Firefly and Superfly and only appear in Preview...

In the Hierarchy menu select the LeftParentSphere as the parent. Click ok. The shoe is now parented to the LeftParentSphere

Go to the pose folder that I provided and apply the !LockFeetToes.pz2 to A3. This will lock the feet and toes of A3. No matter how you pose her they will remain locked into the shoe pose, this includes zeroing rotations in A3. I've also included an unlock pose. lockunlock.png

You can hide the ParentSpheres in preview by toggling them in the Hierarchy or in Parameter Properties if you wish. As I said before they are invisible to render by default.

Looks Like A3 could use a smoothing JCM to correct the front of her feet in that shoe pose. I might toss one together later as an INJ file. I'll post it here if I do...

Wow, EldritchCellar! Thanks a million for your interest and response, I truly appreciate it!

I know these freebie shoes are kind of buggy, but they look a lot better to me than some I've actually spent money on (at least, as far as Aiko 3 goes!)

Your response has been informative, entertaining, and very generous! Thank you so much for your time!

Here's that smoothing JCM... it applies when the bend parameter (X Rotate) is dialed on A3's feet. As the foot bends in degrees it smooths out the lower shin and upper foot, minimizing that bulging of the mesh that occurs there. There's a min limit of zero so the fixes only apply to positive bend values, it's subtle but noticeable... especially in certain lighting. The dials are hidden by default, unless you have show hidden parameters ticked. there's no need to touch the dials as the corrective morphs are slaved to the x rotations of the feet. I recommend not having IK on when first applying the INJ.

Bend Fix

Default bend 50° default-1.png

Fix applied fixed-1.png

That's enough with the feet for today.
