Subject: Removing a figure's hair that is supposed to be "Removable and re-sizable"

willshetterly ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2021 at 1:59 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 4:07 PM

I think I'm forgetting something very basic. Here's the problem:

I just got 3duniverse's Toon Scientist. The promotional text says, "Removable and re-sizable hair, Eyebrows and Mustache". The download only has one OBJ file, which is for the Scientist. In Poser 11, I can use the parameter dials to move the hair away from the Scientist, and I can make the hair invisible, but I can't delete it or save it as a separate prop/character to use with other characters.

I thought I would be able to change the parent for the hair and use it that way, but when I have the hair selected, the option under Object for Change Parent is grayed out, and the option under Figure for Set Figure Parent only lets me change the parent for the entire Scientist.

I'm sure the solution is obvious, but I'm just not seeing it. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the Hierarchy Editor? You might be able to spawn new props/figures from there.

I'll do that shortly. Thanks for the suggestion!

I can find it in the hierarchy editor, but when I select it and click "Create New Figure", it asks for a name, then does nothing, so far as I can tell.

Select it in the hierarchy

Open the grouping tool

It should turn all red

Click spawn prop

I always use the Grouping Tool to make props out of other props or figure body parts.

on edit: OMG, I was typing the same thing about grouping tool at the same time as primorge.

Correction

Click 'Create Prop' sorry, wasn't looking at Poser.

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2021 at 8:21 PM · edited Fri, 03 September 2021 at 8:23 PM

If you want to turn it into a conforming figure

Select the newly created prop

Enter the set up room

Navigate to the original figure in the library and load it while the prop is still selected

This will load the skeleton of the original figure

Leave the set up room, ignore any warnings

Select every body part in the newly created figure in the hierarchy, right click it, delete selected

Leave the head intact

Save to the library, give it a unique name

Fast and dirty conformer, should work

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2021 at 8:30 PM

Probably not necessary. Parented prop is the same thing basically, just more difficult to apply injections to amongst a few other things...

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2021 at 8:34 PM

Probably converting it to a conformer will be too much of a PITA, with geometries and such. Just ignore that, I tend to babble when I'm procrastinating on doing something in Poser lol.

This looks very helpful! Thanks! I hope to try it tonight.

Just a small note. I'm not sure what Poser version you are using but I just took a look in 11 pro and they apparently added a transfer body part function to the conformer creation process. It lets you select actors right there in the set up room via a hierarchy so you can skip the whole deletion process outside the set up room, nice feature. Just in case you decide to experiment with simple conformers.

Primorge, thanks for mentioning that. I do have 11 Pro, so I'll check on that. Soon, I hope.

Thank you all. Am now aware of these functions...
