Subject: Moving Poser 7 Runtime to NEW Windows 11 Computer and Poser 11 Installation

Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong place, but I searched and could not seem to find content relating to this subject.

I was running Poser 7 on a Windows 10 computer for six years. When I copied my old P7 Runtime to the new W10 computer, I lost ALL of my self-created content (poses, hand poses, body morphs, face morphs, and complete characters). I don't know why that content didn't transfer when everything else did.

I just got a new Windows 11 computer, and installed Poser 11. I copied my P7 Runtime to an external drive, and added that as an external library in Poser 11. Once again, all of my self-created content is missing.

What am I doing wrong? Why won't my content transfer? I created my content within the same libraries as Poser 7. In the Figure/Character file, I created a file folder called "My Characters" and saved them there. My FOLDER transferred, but my characters didn't!!! "My Faces" were under the Expression tab. The FOLDER transferred, but not the morph files I'd created. "My Bodies" were under the Pose Tab. The FOLDER transferred, but not the morph pose files. I had saved dozens of hand poses within the DAZ M4 hand folder. That folder transferred, as did the ORIGINAL DAZ M4 hand poses, but not my custom hand poses. I had created dozens of custom poses in a folder called "My Poses" in the Pose folder. The folder transferred, but not the poses! I DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!

I did not install my old Runtime into the Poser 11 Runtime, I added it as an external library, and I can load everything from there like I could from Poser 7, except for my own original content.

The original Runtime for Poser 7 is still in the old computer, intact. Is there a way for me to extract my content???

As I don't have Poser7 anymore, I may just guess but you should see something like this on your library. This is from a Poser11 but you  must have the equivalent button, I suppose that it's easier to find it in floating mode.

You simple have to copy your old runtime to a dedicated folder on your new computer.
For example, in my case, I have reserved a drive for Poser, guess... it's P: 😁

Once it's copied, retrieve your favorite Poser and add as many runtimes as you want using the "+" button

Oh and if I remember correctly, Poser7 is the last "portable" version: you may move its directory wherever you want on your system...

It depends on where it was located.
Up to the V9, I used to use the runtime's "libraries:scene" folder to store my Poser files, and then I stopped, using an external path, so that I can backup the runtimes, what I've bought and my Poser files separately.
And you: how were you used to do?

Are you sure your personal content is on the drive? That would be my first check. Next, I would make sure they were in the proper file structure needed for a runtime. It should be the same as Poser 7, but just in case the copying messed something up. Then I would double-check that the library is pointing to the right place.

Also, try going into windows explorer and dragging one of your custom items into your scene to make sure it didn't get corrupted so the library isn't recognizing it. And that is a way you can continue using your content until we get this figured out.

I think this may be the case with the created content not actually stored in the Poser 7 runtime but in the virtual location.  IIRC, Windows 10 UAC for its Program Files folder prevented content from being saved back to the parent runtime, it relocated the actual content to a different location on the drive but kept the pathway link to the main Poser folder.  The content is not lost, it's a different place.  Like Y-Phil, I don't have P7 installed anymore although I still have its runtime as an external folder.  We need verification that the main P7 folder was indeed in the Program Files folder and that everything that was created and saved was placed there.  Also, I don't recall if P7 actually had the feature that when you hovered over an icon with your mouse a pathway balloon appears.  We need to find the Forum threads dealing with the virtual 'drive', I do remember Bagginsbill chiming in on those posts.

I have Poser 7 and it doesn't have the hover to see the location option. I think that was added in Poser 8 with the new interface.

That's what I thought.  Anyway, I suggest that the OP check this location on his drive: Users > (user's name) > AppData > Roaming > Poser 7.  Make sure that the browser is set to show hidden items otherwise, the AppData folder will not show.  I wish I can provide further information but since I haven't installed any content or saved any custom content to the Program Files folder I've reached a deadend.

Digging further, the pathway that should be as follows: C:\Users\Users Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\MyApplication.  This is based on Windows Vista when UAC and Virtualization were first implemented.  The pathways may have changed since then due to version updates.  But at least this is a starting point.  Again, I can't pursue this further because I don't store anything original content in the Program Files folder.

Just so you know, THIS WORKED, at least so far! I was shocked to discover that my self-produced content was NOT in the program folder, but in this "outside" folder. I am in the process to copying it to an external drive. If that works, I will attempt to install it on the new computer, using the same pathway, so hopefully, they will populate in my external runtime.

I promise to follow up with my findings.

I'm glad that you were able to locate those files.  My recommendation is to stay away from installing anything to the Program Files and just build a separate runtime folder in a shared area to avoid complications.  If your customs are dependent on morphs or OBJ files you may need to rebuild those pathways again.  That means a lot of editing so let's hope that you are spared that major headache.  At least, nothing was permanently lost.

I was able to copy those "old" files into my stand-alone old Poser 7 Runtime (which is not installed in the Poser 11 program folder). I accessed my Poser 7 Runtime in Poser 11 and it appears that all my files are now there! I was able to load one of my "original" M4 figures with no issues! I can't thank you enough for your help!!!
