Subject: Good news and Bad News. LINUX.

Joe@HFG ( ) posted Sun, 11 September 2022 at 11:46 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:24 AM

I have Wine working on my Linux system.

So I decided to try and install Poser 11 Pro.

Of course i failed at my serial number because Smith Micro's servers are dead.

Is there a fix?

How are we handling old serial numbers in a Renderosity controlled world?

I think it might work if I could get past this.

I'm finnally on a new machine that can do 3D after a 15 year hiatus. his was the first time I put the disk in a computer.
I have a giant library of DAZ and R'osity stuff going back to 2001.

I'm rocking a Dell T7910 with dual 8 Core Xeons and 96GB of RAM. I have 2 Geforce GTX 1050ti in it, and 2 1TB SATA SSD.
Oh. And my RTX 3090 should be here by October 3rd. (Fingers crosed.

I'm pretty sure even if I created a VM it would still fail at the Serial Numbers.

So can someone link me to a solve that doesn't require me to upgrade to Poser 12. I really can't afford it after going into debt for the new toys, and I'm mostly using Blender, Unreal Engine, Godot, and FreeCAD for 3D these day with the rest of my Bread and butter apps all FOSS.

Rendo' would do well to read the writing on the wall and get me a Linux version if they want me to buy Poser 12. Or least a WINE Certification.

I'm really only interested in transforming the $10+K of content I bought over the past 21 years of Poser work into a format I can use. (Blender).

I have a couple of things I can bribe the community with.
I made a Comic book version of Ironman I can make available for free along with a super low poly version of Unimesh 3 (Vicky3 and Mike 3) characters for background work.
Reslo take all 3rd Gen UV maps and clock in at 2600 quads.

I mean, I have GTA V running. Poser shouldn't be harder than that.

I'm obviously coming out of retirement, (Now that I am retired! LOL!)

Thanks in advance for the help.

Please feel free to move this if this is the wrong place.

SM's Poser 11 is indeed dead, but not Renderosity's Poser 11. Did you checked Posersoftware.com's download page?
I don't remember precisely: there may be a procedure to convert your old SM's Poser11 serial number into one recognized by Bondware.

I believe you just need the current version of P11 from posersoftware.com. You should be working with 11.3. If for some reason you need to have the number reset, contact them at their support.

If you use Gnome as your Linux desktop, "Bottles for Wine" is a tool that makes it really easy to get Windows applications running on Linux.

https://usebottles.com/

Poser and DAZ-Studio were really easy to install for me. Everything went with the push of a button, everything automatically, including "Wine" which I hadn't installed before (Linux applications install all required drivers, libs and such automatically on demand).

Afterwards you only have to tell Bottles which directories you want Poser to use, because "Bottles" is really a sandbox. Which gives Windows viruses little chance of success :)

That's what used. I've gotten advertisements for R'osity products, but not even acknowledgement of my issue.
I'm glad I wasn't a hurry to get back into poser.
I tried to create a trouble ticket, but since my SM licence number is listed as invalid, I can't do that.

So... multiple trouble tickets until apparently my account was locked. No response emails. Plenty of adds... but NO support responces. Not even an automatic "Trouble ticket" alert with the reference number.

I know it not spam, or blocking on my end because advertisements.
Here is my last ad. Renderosity Vendor of the Month - pamawo

So... is there a phone number or smoke signals to let me ACTUALLY get support?
Is there a rep in the NYC area I can perform an unnatural act with? (I'm handicapped so travel out of NYC is not an option)

I'm tempted to just bounty a cr2/crx pluggin for blender. Except I already paid for Poser 10 and 11 physical disks so I wouldn't have a problem. Silly Me.

Sorry. That's what I get for checking the forum before my coffee. Just to be clear, you did update to the latest version of Poser 11, correct? The reason I ask is that you mention the SM servers and the physical disk. If you're still using the version that wants to contact SM, you will need to download the latest version that will contact the correct servers. Support will tell you the same thing. If it still doesn't work with Poser 11.3, I'll see if I can ask someone to look into this for you.

Sorry for snapping back. 2 weeks of being ignored is taking a toll.

I wish. My SM serial is rejected so I'm not allowed to DL the latest R''osity version. which is why I've been repeatedly trying to get some one  at support to wake up.

But how do I even GET 11.3 if its behind a serial number wall I can't access?

See the source of my fustration now?

I got P12 working under Linux/WINE.
However, with the help of "Bottles", something like a compatibility layer. This is easiest to install for Gnome users.
However, there are also all other common packages. See here:

Good news update.

I got Poser 11. running.

There are a couple of issues.

Starting up, I get 3 notifications about cefclient.exe needing to close because of a serious problem,

lso I have a 4K screen and all my "Windows" screen are too small to read.
Any tips an resizing the UI so I can see what I'm doing, other that hooking up a lower res monitor?OKNv0yhmkl1bJOtIzljYek0kSkpGsooTxakDxrOe.png

Any ideas about the failing cefclient.exe?

Now I have to figure out how to add all my runtimes back!!! 8-|

The easiest way to add your runtimes is to find your LibraryPrefs.xml files for both Poser 10 and Poser 11.

Make a backup copy of the Poser 11 one in case you mess up. Open each in a text editor and then copy the lines that look like this

<ContentFolder folder="F:\Poser stuff\Poser Runtimes\Aiko\Runtime\libraries"  index="8"  searchIndexed="1" />

from the Poser 10 version to the Poser 11. Your path will probably look a little different since I have mine all stuck together in a folder called Poser runtimes on my f: drive.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the failing cefclient.exe

I think the last Poser I used regularly was Poser 7. LOL.

"Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the failing cefclient.exe"

Yeah. It appears to have something to do with the Library functions. I hope I don't have to resort to a virtual machine.

Note that Poser7 is the last Poser version to be somewhat "portable": I managed to run it from other folders, same os Poser6 😄

cefclient.exe

This is what's crashing under Wine on Linux.

figured out how to have custom Runtimes under 4.5, and all my runtimes are backed up from then.I also have CDR from DAZ and R'osinty from back when they both offered those.

But it seems like this crash prevents any library functions from working.

If you REALLY want me to upgrade to 12 and or 13, I want at least 100% wine compatibility.

In the meantime, if some one could figure out a fix for this, I would love to get back to my old work.

Yeah...messaging popped up the crash thing, and the library is a blank white space.

cefclient.exe means: "Chromium Embedded Framework".
It is most likely used to display the library and/or keep the connection to the online store (I'm just guessing).

The good news is that in my Computer (Linux/Wine/Bottle/P12) cefclient.exe does not cause problems. May be that in P11 an older version is used. I can not say because I have only ever used P11 in a VM.

If you use Bottle: Try to change the settings a little bit.

For testing purposes you can install P12 (a trial version is available on Posersoftware.com, it can be used for 21 days without restrictions). P12 also uses cefclient.exe and works for me, as I already mentioned.

There is something else that needs to be considered: The upper/lower case. For Linux, "Test.pz3" is different from "test.pz3". And "Runtime" is different from "runtime". Windows always sees one and the same file or directory in the example names.

Windows users are not used to case-sensitivity in file and directory names. If you have Poser files on a Linux drive, you can get problems very fast. This starts with Poser not recognizing directories as valid "runtime" because the structure of the directories is not correct. It often doesn't help to change the case in the name so that it fits first. Because a linked file then wants to have upper/lower case written exactly the other way around.

Remedy can be done in 2 ways. The easiest one: Provide a network drive (or a path) with "Samba" and disable case sensitivity there. The other way is to create symbolic links in the runtimes for each contained path. Same name, but first letter case reversed.
