Subject: libarys and systems in poser.

hi, after years im back in the poser game as i have just made use of the discount on poser 11 and got that, i will do for my use. I did try Daz after my old pc broke but I could not get on with it and soon ralized it would be expensive to get back all the props and stuff i have in poser.  This brings me to my point, after years of collecting for poser (from about poser 7) i have so much stuff it is hard to keep track of what i have, my memory is not what it use to be so i tend to spend lots of time click in folders looking for things.

So i turn to my fellow poser fans to share how you keep your libarys straight and easy to find things? would it be better to keep all the props and things not in the basic program on another drive? (this is what im considering)

It's really a matter of preference and organization.  There is nothing wrong with keeping your runtimes on a separate drive, I have that arrangement on another computer with a second install of Poser 11 & 12.  Recommendation, don't install any content into the primary program folder unless that install is away from Program Files; the only files going there should be your Python scripts.  It's easier to do fresh installs because you can determine where all your assets will be located; it's tougher if you import existing runtimes and attempt to rearrange content between folders. A pathway will definitely get broken along the way.

In my case, for example, I had added an SSD, devoted to Poser. and I've kept my old Runtimes as is, managing the new content only in new runtimes.
Being on a Windows 10 system, the new drive has the letter P, and Poser12 is also installed here, besides the Runtimes collection:

I would like to start over and keep the poser 11 stuff as it was. ( i made the mistake of stuff everything in the main runtime folder before i poserd this thread)

I would like to tidy it all up and get it more qrganized. however twice now i have uninstalled and reinstalled only to find the files are as they were? how do i get a freash install?

Uninstalling/reinstalling Poser will not get rid of the 3rd party content you already installed.  You will need to uninstall Poser and then completely delete the primary Poser folder or move the residual folders to another location before reinstalling Poser.  But performing the latter will certainly break many things.  If you have the original content files archived separately from your computer, my suggestion delete everything and start afresh, installing what you really need or want and reserving the rest for projects; no use installing content that you will use once or never use.  However, if you have very old content, you will need to address and convert the old thumbnail .RSR file format to .PNG file format.

Try not to clutter your Poser installation. Keep whatever you can on a non-system drive, just link/un-link those product folders through 'external library' when needed.

A lot of the old models did not have 'correct' runtime folder trees. May be worth crafting an un-populated one of your own, ready for copy/pasting stuff.

This also helps if you collect and convert models from other formats, such as DS/DUF, SFM, XPS and PMX. As yet, I can only import 'rigged' as FBX, albeit warily...

You got RSR thumbnails ? You need the totally classic Dizzi converter...

I'm still finding and untangling some of the early DS figures / outfits that came as self-installing EXE files. Some may be opened as 'archives', most must be wrangled to have sight of Poser, then shunted onto data drive. Many only have RSR thumbnails, so I knew what you needed...

so do EXE files need removing? im not the best at this stuff i have worked out how to follow folders and put them in the right place over the years but when it comes to file types its all alien language to me.

If you are able to install an executable file into a separate temporary folder and rewrap it as a zip file then you can delete it from your system forever.  I am assuming that you are referring to the older DAZ content container files they used for distribution.  If you still have an account with them, download a fresh install file from them, it will be repackaged as a zip file.  The only drawback to reinstalling the much older content is thumbnail incompatibility, which is not corrected, and the dozens of hacks that are included in the material room based on the older technology.  If you are knowledgeable about using the Material Room then this will definitely keep you busy.

so one last question if you guys and gairls dont mind. after i convert rsr files to pgn can i delete the rsr files or do they have some background funtion?

hborre ( ) posted Wed, 09 November 2022 at 12:50 PM

Most converters that I have used automatically delete the RSR files upon conversion.  There is only one vendor that I am aware of that uses RSR files for a different purpose other than image files, Baron Von Harkonnen (BVH).  I think the vendor has dropped out of site quite some time ago.
