Subject: Poser Pro 11 crashes during Rendering of older Scenes

Chrom93 ( ) posted Wed, 25 January 2023 at 8:55 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 1:50 PM
Hello,

this is no real big issue but it bothers me somehow:
Sometimes, if I open Poser scenes (pz3) I created in former poser versions and firefly render them, Poser crashes.
In the former Poser version there is still no problem with the file.
The point is this does not happen to every earlier pz3.
Does anybody know this and has an idea?
Thank you!

Without knowing what your scene(s) contain and how large is/are the file(s), it's hard to tell.  Bad render settings?  Is there any other information that you can provide?

The most likely culprit is bag geometry. There are combinations of geometry that break the subdivision in Poser. An example of this is something called collinear facets. Another that can cause issues is non-manifold surfaces. Poser attempts to detect these and avoid attempting to render them but the possibilities of weird geometry are endless.

The work around is to use the older version of Poser (Yes you can have more than one major version installed on your computer) and remove items from the scene until it will load properly. That at least you'll know what prop or figure is causing problems.

Thank you,
I will check this out.

'Crash' crash, or renders black ??

Latter may be due to scene and/or texture complexity. IMHO, Poser_11's 'garbage collection' can get 'maxed-out' if you do a lot of texture changing, especially 2k, 4k, 8k super-detailed textures. Save PZ3, close and re-start Poser usually helps. If necessary, down-size mega-textures using eg free Irfan View.

Don't know about Firefly, but I also tackle persistent 'renders-black' failures in Superfly by reducing my 'vols & buckets' from 1024 by binary stages to 64. At that point, probably faster to switch from my overloaded GPU cards to CPU-only, or send job to networked 'Box'...

It is s real crash crashs- poser shut down during renderring while picking the textures. So your point about textures seems to be correct. Simply saving does not always work , but I can rebuild the old scenes with newer poser without problems. Just takes its time. Well I hope the upcoming Poser will do better.
Thanks again

Have you tried to launch Poser and instead of opening an old Poser file to import it?
