Subject: backgrounds created for Daz Studio's Cyclorama Multiplane works in Poser 11

helderres ( ) posted Mon, 20 February 2023 at 10:50 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 1:20 AM

I have some files I downloaded from Freestuff of Renderosity, which refer to backgrounds for Daz Studio's Cyclorama Multiplane, (e.g. epony_five-backgrounds-for-multiplane-cyclorama_74254).

The various files that I downloaded, I installed in Daz Studio 4.21 and they worked fine.

I would like to know if they can work on Poser 11.

I tried to do the installation of them manually in Poser 11 but it did not work.

I proceeded as follows:

1) I unzipped the file and as a result came up the following folders:

My Library>Environments>Landscapes>Backgrounds

               >Runtime>Textures>Jacky_T>Backgrounds

2) I found in my database of Poser 11, a folder with the name "My Library" and with the subfolders "date" / "people" / "Runtime";

3) So I copied the "Environments" folder from the file I had downloaded, to the "My Library" folder and the other folders from the file I downloaded, I copied them to the corresponding folder from my Poser database.

However, as I said, it didn't work.

So I'd like to know if the backgrounds created for Daz Studio's Cyclorama Multiplane, (e.g. epony_five-backgrounds-for-multiplane-cyclorama_74254) can work on Poser 11.

This is a very old background system that has been around for many years.  Hardly anyone uses it anymore.  It requires the Cyclorama Prop that should be somewhere in your Poser Library.  Conduct a search in your Poser Library.  And it does work in Poser.

My dear friend, once again I appreciate your guidance.

As for the Cyclorama file, which you said I should have in my Poser library, I googled, (using Windows Explorer), looking for the word "Cyclorama" in my Poser library, but found no corresponding file.

I also searched the Runtimefolder>Libraries.Props. I also searched the Runtime>Templates folder, but i didn't find in any of the folders the file "Cyclorama".

So I decided to search my library Daz Studio and found in the folder Runtime>Suport, the files with the word "Cyclorama".

So I once again ask for your help asking: Should I copy the background files I downloaded from Renderosity Freestuff in that folder, (Runtime>Suport)?

My friend, I continued searching and found that the background files that Poser reads have the extension ".cr2" and the files I downloaded have the extension ".duf". Is that why Poser doesn't read the files I downloaded?

Exactly.

I did a deep dive into the Cyclorama content and found that it did not come as part of the Poser Legacy package; there was other content that did something similar.  That was my bad.  I do not know where the Cyclorama background files are installed on DS.  As I stated, Cyclorama is very old content that no one uses anymore.  I still have a copy of it for Poser and I did look at it.  It is nice but not practical when you can use HDRIs for background images and lighting.  In addition, the formats for the background images will cause visual distortions if you simply try to import them directly into your program.  And lighting will be close to impossible to match for a decent render.

I wouldn't say no one uses it. I just posted a couple of images with it. And I've seen others use it too. It actually came from Daz 3d and is still available there. As Hnorre said, it is old and many of the images for it are of lower quality so depending on your needs, it may not be the best option. Most aren't as nice as what you post in the gallery.

Maybe I was too hasty to say that no one uses it anymore.  I did go back and visited Cyclorama and rendered this image using additional props, a combination of actual lighting and HDRI, and a few props I changed the materials to.

Overall, not bad with a plate background.  Just a few more tweaks and a shallower depth of field and I'll think it's ready for the gallery.

I want to thank you all for your information. They are very valuable to me that I know very little about Poser 11 and Daz Studio 4.21.

The hborre mentioned HDRI, which I know nothing about this function.

We have an expression here in Brazil that says "this is Greek for me", which means that we don't know anything about a particular subject. So HDRI is Greek to me.

I'm looking for a good option to use as a background, and it doesn't necessarily have to be Daz Studio's Cyclorama.

If anyone can give me a tip on where to look for information about the use of HDRI I am very grateful.

This is a link that will explain what High Dynamic Range Images are about:

https://www.cgibackgrounds.com/blog/what-is-an-hdri

This is to understand better the process involved in creating such an image and its utilization in commercial and 3D applications.  The photos serve a dual purpose, they provide a 360-degree panorama background and high dynamic range realistic lighting to your 3D virtual environment.   When a model is properly textured with Physically-Based Rendering Material and combined with an HDRI environment, you will get a render like something below:

pMCnTr9dqbIK6Xv6tUtyDcIGdgHJaxnaGp9m13sN.png

A rendered image that will look naturally real.  The example I'm showing is a model that had its texture materials redone and rendered in a scene with a 360-degree HDR image map and no additional lighting.  Poser and DS have different ways of projecting an HDRI map and you'll need to explore how each software handles these images for a render.  There are many sources for free maps available and you can use your favorite search engine to find those sites.  Some have excellent sources, others not so great.  But you need to understand the fundamentals before you dive into this aspect of rendering 3D images.

HDRI is an image format that has greater light information. The images are 360° and you put them on a large sphere or the background texture. That needs a special setup which I can't show you at the moment since my computer is busy rendering. We have some in the marketplace. O the wise, polyhaven has a large selection.
