Subject: CHR Characters?

I've several characters that in the Daz Content folders have two version; a regular or Raw, and then one simply labeled CHR. Can't find any differences and of course no mention in any of the product literature or on the store pages.

When exported via FBX, the CHR is nearly 4X in size (even though both are set to use Base res). Once extracted though, they have the exact same poly count, etc.

So, what are the differences?

I feel it would be helpful if you were to give the name of the products, so that the products can be reviewed. You might find this helpful -https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/503611/what-is-the-difference-between-chr-and-raw-model-varients

Thanks for replying so quickly.

There've been a number of products over the years where I noticed this, but I'd have to spend some time to look which, is really what I'm trying to avoid.

I don't have the product mentioned in the link, but the most recent case was for https://www.daz3d.com/cthuloid-for-genesis-8-male

I forgotten I bought it as I also picked up https://www.daz3d.com/manilekk-for-genesis-9

My token Gen9 character. No hair, brows, or lashes to deal with. ;)

The link was helpful in that it was how I'd phrase the question (over 3 years old btw), but often the same sort of replies I was getting & why I no longer go there: "I think...". "I believe...".  No definitive answer, and we all know why.

It also confirmed there's no functional difference between the two, so there's no need digging back through & see if there's something I missed.

And that was my primary reason for asking in the first place, so mission accomplished in that regard.

But, I'll make a "guess" then and say it's just a hold-over naming of some sort from the transition from Gen3 to Gen8.

Morphs perhaps?

That's what I was thinking at first, but couldn't find any.

In DS4 if you have a Genesis figure in the scene and selected, and you try and load a character preset an options box will open, load a new figure or apply to selected figure, second option will replace the selected figure with what's in the preset.

DS4 got a few changes when G8 was released, one of these was to the Character Preset system, before G8 all you had was "Shapes" and "Materials", now there is a "Post Load" system in there as well. This allows you to specify which geo-graft(s) to load with the character.

Now as we are talking Rawn's creatures, I'm guessing that RAW is a character preset that you load when you don't have the Genesis figure in your scene or don't have it selected, and the CHR is a character preset you use to replace the selected figure in your scene, or it could be the other way around, I don't have any of them so I can't be sure without access to the files.

Character presets predate Genesis 8, they are what is used to load any figure (the base Genesis # presets are character presets).

Gack!

Well just glad that's more or less in the past.

Thanks for chiming in to both of you.
