Subject: Where are my objects?

trumarcar ( ) posted Fri, 31 May 2024 at 5:32 AM · edited Wed, 01 January 2025 at 3:07 AM

Creating figures, Poser 13 seems to save the objects wherever it feels it should. Where is this, please and how can I save with the figure, so I can work on it?

Also, why does it ask sometimes whether I want to save the object in the figures folder, but other time does not ask?

Confused.

It only saves a new OBJ file if there was a change to the actual geometry. If there's no change it continues to use the same OBJ as before.

When there's been a change there are 3 options presented for the new OBJ.

The first is in the Geometries folder. Which will create a folder with the same name as the character folder. This is the normal method and is required for store releases.

The second location is in the same folder as the character is saved. This seems to be the one you want. This is best for figures that are for your own use and won't be made public.

The third option is don't replace the OBJ. Use this if you didn't intend to change the geometry.

So, what counts as a geometry change?

Anything done inside the geometry group tool, including adding or removing materials.

Any use of the Setup room will create a new OBJ

The fitting room always creates a new OBJ

Thank you - that makes a lot more sense. Not sure if it is an improvement!

Previous versions of Poser didn't ask at all. They just did what they were gonna do and you were left with Schrodinger figure. Open it up and find out if there's on OBJ or not. Starting I think in P11 the option to discard the OBJ change was added. In P13 the option of where the OBJ is saved was added.

Explanations of why aside, here's how: How to easily find where Poser actually saved your OBJ/where the Poser content is referring an OBJ from:

open your library file in a text editor. If you're using Window's Notepad, get ready for it to choke with the file size.

First lines will be some { and a reference to the file version number. Right next, if it's referring to an obj file, you should see a line starting with "figureResFile".

This should tell you the exact location of the OBJ file it's using, you just need to know which Runtime it's referring to, but that should usually be the same Runtime where your library file was saved.

Use Notepad++.  It's free and can handle large files.

In the theme of "Where's my stuff!" there are a couple of pythons that can help

Scripts > PrintInfo > ListFiles Will give you the full path to all assets in the scene.

Poser Runtime Info gives the full path to all the linked runtime.
