Subject: Change Poser and Daz install paths/directories

Alfheim96 ( ) posted Wed, 24 January 2024 at 2:37 PM · edited Sat, 21 December 2024 at 7:09 PM
My C drive on my PC is just too small for me to install Poser and Daz onto. I bought and installed a new SSD that has more than enough space but every time I install Poser or Daz, it automatically defaults to installing download files onto my C drive. I'm having a huge headache trying to solve this issue and would appreciate it someone could please guide me on how to do this.

Have you tried putting in a support ticket? I've found them fast and very knowledgeable.

When you install Poser there's an option to choose the location of the content. The default location is C but you can put it any where you like including your new SSD.

If you are using the Daz Install Manager (DIM) to install all your DAZ purchases, you can modify the settings to install your content onto the new drive.  The process is the same if you are installing Poser-specific files to an external runtime.

How do I do this? I swear I've gone into advanced settings and followed what others have done but it's not working for me.

In DIM, go to the Advanced Settings tab, and at the bottom left side, there is a + sign button, where you add your content path for Poser or any other runtime/content folders you have on your external drive.  Click on the Accept button.  On the app's primary page, make sure that the Show Details feature is checked in the lower right-hand corner.  Now, when you select a content file for installation, proceed to the lower half of the page and change the Content Path Shortcuts field to the runtime of your choice.  Start your queue. This has always worked for me and I have similar arrangements on 2 computers with Poser and DazStudio.

I just looked in my DIM settings and I think I've made a huge mess of the installation settings. I tried changing the directory from default to my new hard drive but whenever I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it has my settings memorised. Is there a way I can factory reset it?

I've taken a quick look into the DIM settings and haven't noted any way of resetting the app.  Taking this into consideration, the only option I would recommend is deleting all the installed runtimes/content folders, clicking accept, and rebooting the app.  As for the log of installed files, those are handled and stored in a different folder and would most likely disappear if you uninstall content through DIM, provided you are still connected to DS.  Otherwise, this might need to be done manually.

I see. I'll have a go at this then. Thank you.

Another quick question, if I change the install path on Poser as well will that automatically change the DSON importer as well or do I have to change that in a different way?

hborre ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2024 at 5:01 PM
If the primary Poser runtime remains on the C:/ drive, there is no need to relocate the DSON Importer.  Now, if you decide that you want to relocate the primary Poser runtime to a different drive, I would consider reinstalling the script.  There might be underlying issues by just copying & pasting or physically moving it to a different location.  Better to play it safe and perform a fresh install.

Apologies if these might be dumb questions, if I keep the Poser runtime in my C drive then does that mean the content I install on Poser will automatically go to my C drive? And if it stays in the C drive then does the content I download on Daz Install Manager for Poser download into the C drive? Hope that makes sense

You need to reconfigure the installation options with Poser so that your content will be placed on your secondary drive.  The option will be available when you reinstall Poser.  Initially, all your content should be directed to the Poser 11 Content folder and you must tell the Poser installer where you want that folder to be installed (second drive).  Once that is established, your Download and Purchases folders will also be created in that location.  Any other additional runtimes can either be created or moved to the new drive and relinked to the Poser Library.

Content folders need to be linked to DIM manually and then be selected manually for proper installation depending on how you organized your content files.

This is the installation tab of my DIM app.  Currently, it shows where my content folders are located and the buttons on the lower left-hand corner are used to manage what folders I want linked to the app.  This is just a small selection of folders I have added to DIM, but I have a very extensive collection of runtime folders I haven't added yet.  Note; except for the documents folder, all the other folders are residing on my D drive.

The illustration below shows how I install DAZ content into DS and Poser.  The highlighted area is a pull-down menu and it will show the linked runtimes the you see above.

Thank you for being so helpful, really appreciate it. I'll give this a shot later tonight and hopefully I can get it to work. Thank you again.

Is there any more specific instructions, I can't do it. slope

To avoid data loss, you should double check and back up important files before performing this operation. fnaf online
