Subject: Fractal Terrains are cool

This picture comprises a single terrain, generated from a fractal image created with (somewhat obviously!) a fractal generator.

The fractal image itself is included under the Vue image.

I think it gives a level of realism and complexity to a terrain that you wouldn't really get in Vue's own generator without an awful lot of work.

Admittedly, it takes a while to render...

This is also (and far more obviously) generated from a fractal...

Bug-eyed alien insect fractal thing?

(ok. enough fractals already)

Very very cool concept :))

Really cool! Does anyone know were you can download a fractal generating program?

Breathtaking image..just beautiful jaywat! I'll have to try my hand at generating some fractal terrains. I have done a lot of fractal work myself but never really tried creating terrains out of them. droyd of all the fractal generators I have used Ultra Fractal is by far my favorite because of it's versatility...a link to the Ultra Fractal website is attached so you can download a demo if you'd like to check it out.

Thanks for the quick reply marvilla I'm headed there now. droyd

Wow, you've really got a good thng going there, Jay! Nice images! My favorite fractal generators are made by Stephen C. Ferguson -- Tierazon, Flarium, Iterations, Sterling, InkBlot Chaos. He seems to have moved his website since I last checked up on him, though. Some of his programs (all freeware) may be available at some software-download sites. You may also be interested in the Vue work of Mike Morris and Katherin Auton (R'osity nick: "mank"). Mike and Katherine have been making some incredible fractal terrains with Vue and...well, I seem to have misplaced their website link. Boy, I don't have any links tonight! Sorry! ;)

My pleasure droyd...BTW if you want to see some images I have created with Ultra Fractal go to my fractals website which I attached to this reply. Even though my fractal images are not terrain related, you'll be able get an idea what a powerful and creative tool UF can be.

Took some hunting. But did find this page that has a link to a few freeware/shareware fractal sites.

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 07 November 2001 at 3:41 AM

Yeah, teriffic pictures, I'd say, especially the top one! I don't know much about fractals, but I think I want to, now....

Varian ( ) posted Wed, 07 November 2001 at 11:17 AM

ack, Mike and Katherine's R'osity nick is "mandk", I missed the "d" above, sorry. But I do have some links this time. :) This is a basic fractal generator that's fun to play with, freeware: http://www.imaxx.net/~shawn/chaosv13.zip Hurray! I found the new page for Stephen Ferguson's excellent freeware programs: http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/ Here is Paul Lee's extensive fractal generator list: http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/Fractal_Software.html

marvilla - those fractal images on your site are saaaweeet!! That's mathmatica? I never knew what that program did...LOL. I have XenoDream. Have you ever heard of that? You can make 3D fractals and turn them in any direction and render them. Pretty cool program. You can't export them yet, but the creators are working on it. I have some images from it my gallery...do a search for Daffy34. There are some that look like sea shells and some others. I just love playing with it. No reason tho why I couldn't render one in grayscale and use it for a terrain tho...I'll have to give it a try :). Laurie

Thanks Laurie...I just saw your XenoDream images and I have to say they are beautiful! :) Xeno Dream is a neat program, quite a few artists on the Ultra Fractal Yahoo E-Group were also on their Beta testing team and came up with some exciting shapes. I have KPT 5 and it's KPT Frax4D plugin is also capable of creating almost the same similar shapes as XenoDream, and can be manipulated the same way inside of PS so I never really did get into XenoDream. Too many programs and not enough minutes in the day to learn all of them, huh? LOL BTW your poser images are incredible...so many wonderful images you have shared in your gallery! Marvilla

Hey Marvilla, great fractal pictures... :) A couple of years back, I did a couple of fractal pictures that came out very nice, and I did it with Tierazon.. So I'm with Varian, definitely a nice program...

tradivoro ( ) posted Thu, 08 November 2001 at 1:04 AM

Jaywat, that's some very nice stuff you got there... Great use of terrains and fractals...

marvilla ( ) posted Thu, 08 November 2001 at 3:05 AM

Thanks tradivoro :) Tierazon is great also...the only reason I stuck with UF is because it has layering and masking capabilities and even merge modes with the layers. Just like Photoshop or PSP. Made it more familiar for me and that's why I chose it. Plus there is a huge community of people out there constantly writing parameter formula files and sharing them with the rest of the UF users through UF's database and their mail list. For simple fractals Tierazon is the way to go though...UF just has more power which allows you that extra 'edge'if you want to get really creative, but at the same time it has a very easy learning curve grin
