"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Decent attempt. Search the web for reference on spaceships and/or mechanical type stuff. Before modeling your spaceship, it would be best to draw it out on paper so you know where to go when you start. When modeling, think if the thing could fly through space, if the design is practical and would actually work in the real world. Also, when texturing spaceships, your best friend is the bump and diffuse channels (if applicable). Add a bump texture map to create panels and small detail, then add the diffuse texture map for damage, grime, and other things you can think of. Keep working on it!
Well CIM, I would have to disagree with you on this one. The whole point of the CG world is to unlock creativity and begin to think outside the "box". The only time when you have to model something that really works or is practical is when your doing industrial design. Other than that the only thing that counts is making it as bad ass looking as you can. Besides, a practical spaceship...well, you can only model the space shuttle so many times before it gets old.
