Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 02 4:55 pm)
Personally, I don't think those are stupid questions at all :) I've been attempting the creation of my own textures as well, and having a devil of a time doing it. Finally got something that looked like a texture map via UVMAPPER, but it doesn't seem to want to work right - I replace the obj file with the one I export from UVMAPPER, and I don't see anything when I try to apply a texture made with the new template. I've read just about all the tutorials out there, and all seem to have one fatal flaw: they assume the reader knows how to do everything already! The ones that aren't too advanced are too basic. Once I figure out some of the more intermediate steps, I think I'll write a tutorial for some of the stuff I'm trying to learn now.
You don't need to make a new texture every time you morph one of the figures. While it is true that the texture may stretch somewhat over the areas of EXTREME morphs, the texture will still fit as long as as the base object does not change and the number of polys remains consistent (meaning that you don't alter the base object). You can make morph targets with Poser's magnets and dials, or you can alter parts of the mesh in another 3D program. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, and one of the modeling people will be by to explain this further :). Laurie

I will try a basic explaination here using P4 dude as the example. P4 guy uses 4 files to operate in poser4 on a PC .obj file, this is the mesh itself and also has the texturing info. .rsr partnered with the .obj, this is a short-hand version of the .obj file that poser uses to load the figure faster. From time to time this file may become corrupted and need to be deleted, after which poser will take a few extra seconds the next time the figure is loaded to rebuild it. .cr2 file, this file is poser specific and contains the info to make the figure move and morph. .rsr file partnered with .cr2, again a shorthand version of the .cr2, this also contains the thumbnail that shows in the library. I don't think poser will rebuild this file if deleted, but it really isn't a required file (you just won't have a thumbnail) UVmapper will not change the shape of a mesh, but what it can do is useful in that it can map out and .obj file giving you a template so you can create your own textures, and for more advanced users it can also reassign parts of a mesh to different groups and materials. If you want to turn P4 guy into popeye you will need to morph him, you do that right inside poser using the parameter dials. In case the standard morphs don't do what you want them to and you need a custom morph you have a few options. 1. find a site that has a morph and import it into poser 2. create a morph with magnets (a poser4 feature) 3. create a morph with a 3d application (anim8or is a good free one) and import into poser as to the texturing portion of poser Textures are simply pictures that are strecthed over a mesh, like a nylon stocking will strech over a leg. the texture will not change the shape of the mesh, but the mesh will change the look of a texture. You can find many free textures for your figure here at renderosity in free stuff.Aha!!! That was incredibly helpful, thank you very much! Muahaha, I will become the texture god now! Sorry, it's just that, for the first time, everything made sense to me, and I don't feel like people are speaking gibberish. cackle I'm gonna go make me some stuff! ahem I will attempt to calm down now. Too much coffee.

Good Morning, Okay, I have been studying the UV Mapper by Steve. Let me see if I get all of this straight: A human model in Poser 4 or one of the 3DAZ models will basically come with an OBJ file (a map) that defines polar coordinates of the image and a texture, right? So if I want to give Victoria big Popeye biceps I can import her map into UV Mapper and then increase the coordinates of the bicep. Right? Then I would have to apply a new texture or modify another in Adobe Photoshop (of skin and such) to the model because it the standard texture will not work with a modified OBJ file. So what do I have to do? Keeep creating textures of skin for every model that I somehow alter? I guess I am kind of puzzled about how the texture of skin works with a human model. Is there a good tutorial out there? Any good human skin texture resources? Sorry about the babble...I am waiting on my new Dell to show this week and the Poser & Adobe software. I needed to upgrade badly...and I am hanging on the edge of my seat waiting to get started. Thanks for the help...sorry for the stupid questions. Best Regards, John
