"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
ok this helps looks moore like a monster ! from the above picture it was hard to identify what i now believe is the tentacles ! I Think it would be alot cooler if you repositioned the eye at the moment it distracts from the form a creature with one eye would need good visoion being able to see all around it I think they would go muc better either just in front of the two fins or above the mouth but thats a personal style and where concept sketches help issue it will be a little easier to see whan you get the mouth done try and refrance some squidd octi and shark it might help you with anotomical issues keep us updated
I have some advice about organics. It is not a fact but a general rule of thumb. You see the area along the teeth. It is too straight. A general rule in organics is absence of straight lines and right angles, even in the design process. It takes away from the organic appeal. While it is not the finished product and I am sure you have other intentions, it is just a piece of information.
Oh by the way, the teeth are not in a straight line, its just the angle thats wrong right now. And on Travis comment about the eye, well i kinda want the same sort of mystery that the aliens in Aliens have, u know no eyes, etc etc mystery "ooh, aah". But i too dont really like the big eye i got right now, we'll see what i'll do with it in the future.
Excellent Work!! Lightwave gives nice results. As I've said before, I'm new to modelling, but have studied different predators (as a biologist) for years. I'm only offering constructive criticism and love your work!! As many artists have said in the past, try and build up an actual profile for your creature. It's great to do awesome work, but awesome to design something that is believable. What does your creature eat? Realistically, no predator would have its eye located in such a place...put it on top (the spherical design would give a wide field of vision). Personally, 2 menacing eyes would be more effective. Also, the mouth doesn't appear very functional. What happens to its teeth when its jaw closes (are the upper teeth still visible, as T.rex and crocodiles or disappear like the 4th tooth in alligators?). All predator's teeth usually point backward INTO the jaw, to preven prey escaping. The teeth I feel need to not taper so much...they look too fragile. Will your fellow have nostrils? Again, if you come up with a hypothetical profile for your creature it will help you come up with some effective improvements to your wonderful design.
You're welcome. I know your animal isn't quite a shark, but has some similarity in bodyform. Sharks have several rows of teeth waiting to sprout and replace those that they lose (if you're gonna run around eating things, you can't afford to be missing teeth. It would be great to see some indication of reserve teeth lying to the inside of the main teeth. If this isn't clear, I should be able to dig up a ref picture for you. Also...I love the tentacles....break up the symmetry and maybe have one tentacle twisted forward in a more menacing fashion..as if sensing potential prey. Keep up the brilliant work :)
