Subject: Seeking Hair Recommendations

Ok. I'm gonna shell out some money to actually gasp buy some poser hair models. But there's too many! So guys: I'm looking for 5-6 hair models. Preferably models with options and morphs to make variations. Which do you use/recommend/like? Don't like? and why? Thanks guys! (feel free to plug your own products if you like ;) I won't tell) Lyrra

I myself am partial to vairesh's hair, I have quite a few of them, and they work great, and he has so many to choose from, elvena is a new one he just did, and shannyn, but he has many, take a look at his store here and he has a couple at Daz's. And the prices are very very reasonable!

the wonder wedge and anton's changing ponytail available from Daz

In my limited time I have had many of the hair props and I think that hmann's Cleo hair and Total hair are some of the most realistic (however the ability to adjust is nearly overwhelming...could be a negative or a positive), Vairesh is in many ways the most usable (work well in lots of poses without complicated adjustment). I really like the wonder wedge...of coarse short hair needs less posing work. I have been tempted to buy many more...being in search of the best hair. It seems to me that hair is likely the hardest item to make photorealistic, particularly when animated. The best deal is the free hair from Digital Babes (Kozaburo at www.digitalbabes2.com), which is some of the best around. I have just gotten LW7 and am looking forward to Sasquatch (spelling?)...the hair making system. Someday the perfect hair will be available to all.

ya know...I've purchased a few hair models but always keep going back to Kozaburo's free stuff. In addition to being able to morph the dickens out of 'em, the textures that come "out of the box" are generally superior too.

Questor ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 12:29 AM

I agree with PabloS, I've purchased a lot of hair files over the last year of which I tend to use the Wonder Wedge most but I still go back time and again to Kozaburo's hair, you just can't beat his work.

Anton's Changing Ponytail with the expansion pack is probably the most versatile hair out there. I love it. I would also highly recommend Hmann's Cleo hair. His Total Hair package is just as good, but personally I'm less fond of that one: it's a little too complex (which could be a plus for someone else). The new Daz flat top hair style isn't the most versatile around, but it fits all of the P4 and DAZ figures easily, and so far I'm really pleased with that one. Mehndi's Ultra Salon hair is a absolutely amazing and easy to use, if less morphable than some of the others. Well, those would be my recs, anyhow. Though, as has already been said, Kozaburo's freebies are also some of the best out there.

Hmann's Total hair rocks!!! I definitely think it's a big plus to have a huge assortment of morphs and believe me, this hair does. None of the promo pictures do the Total Hair justice. I personally like hair that looks windblown or like they're flying or floating, and I think Total Hair is about the only hair that could do that. The runner up would be Anton's Changing Ponytail. I was not too fond of the "out of the box texture". I've had to come up with a texture of my own for it, but loved it since. I have only one of Vairesh's hair, and I could clearly see that a lot of work was put into it, but it's just not that easily to use in my humble opinion. There were a lot of bits and pieces to it. Maybe I'm just too lazy to play with it. My best advice is to go with what you think looks best, not what other people tell you. It's you who will have to work with the hair in the end! Happy shopping.

I have Total Hair and Cleo hair, I like it but I can't really ... well... use it much. There are lots of options but it always seems to look liek basically the same hair. If someone would come out with a good set of poses for that hair to do different styles and help get users started I think it would sell well. Anton's chainging pony tail is good - but you definately need an aftermarket texture.

It depends on what you are trying to do. I like Total Hair a lot because you can get a wavy look into the hair which I have not found that easily in others. Super

i found a collection of morph targets for the venerable DAZ Victoria flip hair style lurking in my Poser Runtime folder--and i wish someone would pipe and let us know who did them, because they turn this hair style into something very nice, very usable. It may have been part of Voluptuous Vicky, which comes with a nicely morphed flip hair as part of the character. Does someone know???

Chailynne ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 2:03 PM

I like Vairesh's Kellie hair. Enough morphs to make it very usable by changing length and sway, over the shoulder or not. Guess I just really like the looks of it though not photorealistic. If I want hair that looks real I use Kozaburo's hair. Not all body/face textures I use are photoreal though. ;o)

  1. Anton's Ponytail with expansion. And there are some nice textures around for it. 2. Runtime DNA Hair. Syyd did a fabulous job with the textures. It's got quite a few morphs with it. 3. Hmanns awesome Cleo Power Hair. I beta tested this hair and it's so totally realistic. No post work is needed on it. 4. Flat Top Morph hair at Daz. I love it. Not very versatile but it's wicked cool. 5. Any of Vairesh's hair. Some of them are hard to use but you generally have a ton of options and morphs.

ChromeTiger ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 7:02 PM

Ok, I'm going to go with my top 3 here, in no particular order: Anton's Changing Ponytail, with the expansions Harvey Mann's Total Hair Complete The Wonder Wedge All three of these hairstyles have been extremely versatile. Other worthy hairstyles I have worked with include: Harvey Mann's Cleo Power Hair Victoria's Gel Cut DAZ' Flat Top Hair Hope this gives you a starting point...have fun!

kbade ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 8:20 PM

nfredman: Voluptupus Vicki's hair is created by a magnet, which has the added benefit of changing the hair in different poses. The morphs for the flip hair (which I also d/l'ed from what I remember to be an unlikely sounding source) do not appear to be created from the VV hair magnet; in fact, I think the morphs predated VV.

nfredman ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 11:30 PM

Thank you, kbade! Nobody i knew could figure out where they came from. Anyhow, i can say it now: those flip hair textures i was working on are now on sale at DAZ3D. They definitely give the old hair some new life (if i do say so myself), and i recommend those ancient MTs, too. :^) And yes, i am a hair shopping 'ho. The Victoria Changing Ponytail + Expansion is one of the best values around, being multi-purposed. i think i have almost all the others that have been mentioned, and i go through phases of using one and then the others. i like Vairesh's work, but i find them rather special purpose. But--i don't have the RDNA hair. i couldn't tell if it covered the scalp properly from their demo pictures--didn't look like it, so i haven't gotten that one yet. Onward!

kbade ( ) posted Fri, 30 November 2001 at 12:42 AM

BTW, just found the link for the FlipHairMTs...but its dead now! And given the nature of the URL, I don't want to post the e-mail address in the ReadMe, as I don't know whether the file was supposed to be available for D/L there. And nfredman, those textures look good! Guess I'll just have to cross someone off my Xmas list, so there's more for me (just kidding, but my credit card company won't be)!

Lyrra ( ) posted Tue, 04 December 2001 at 6:52 PM

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I'm going with these hairs (that sounds weird): Changing Ponytail & Expansion (for "updoes") Wonderwedge ('cause I like the 'mullet' look darnit) Variesh's Gwenavere (for long wavy hair) Sydd's Genx hair I really like the looks of some of Vairesh's other hairs but they really do seem more 'special use' to me. I looked at the ultrasalon hair, but I really don't need long braids that often, and I hear its tricky and tedious to pose. Thanks muchly! Lyrra
